Something is Happening in Top Kill Process [LIVE THREAD]
http://www.bp.com/ ^ | 5/26/2010 | Self

Posted on 05/26/2010 1:49:19 PM PDT by Positive

I have been monitoring the live feed of the "Top Kill" apparatus from BP.com and after about three hours there is a definite change of events down there.

For the first couple of hours we could see several views of a very complex device rocking around in clear water.

Now there is gushing of what I presume is the "mud" plumeing.

We may get some incite as to progress soon.

40 years ago I lived next to a 6 acre lake. It was so full of life, you bumped into frogs as you swam in it. It had Big bass, turtles with shells two feet round. We caught a bass two feet long.

Somehow a heating oil tank leaked a few thousand gallons into the stream that fed the lake.

After the oil spill, it was dead for years. Its shocking how complete it kills.

A couple of gallons of oil spill can contaminate ground water for miles around. We used to live in a rural area where people had underground tanks for heating oil and gasoline for their farm vehicles.

Leaks can be deadly dangerous. Any suggestion that this is a minor event is criminal.

Well said.

BP's highly professional and responsible approach to this spill has been impressive, especially compared to Pemex.

The Ixtoc spill in 1979 was much larger, and Pemex took something like nine months to cap it. They then asserted sovereign immunity to get out of paying compensation.

The Gulf somehow survived - probably because oil has been seeping out of the Gulf seafloor for millions of years. For so long in fact that some bacteria not only eat oil, they have evolved to eat it.

Actually, there will still be drilling in the Gulf. It just won’t be by US or allied interests.

Here’s a March 18 editorial from the Washington Times stating that the Obama administration was already planning to ban drilling on the outer continental shelf before the “accident”: http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2010/mar/18/obama-surrenders-gulf-oil-to-moscow/

The BP announcement of the find was on March 17: “BP PLC announced Wednesday {3/17/2010} that it has discovered a “giant” crude deposit in an ancient rock formation that’s proving to be a new frontier in the search for new sources of energy. This oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico was used to drill the exploration well about 250 miles southeast of Houston. (AP Photo)”

The rig didn’t blow until April 20, over a month after the article was published.

Of course, anybody who thinks that a Cuban or Venezuelan torpedo igniting the rig’s million-gallon fuel oil storage sank the rig is a complete nutjob. Likewise with anybody who thinks that the reason the BOP never activated is because there was never a spike in well pressure.

I’m pretty “ignert” on this stuff, but it “seems like” this is a good thing. Obviously this is drilling mud (or some of it is) and this shows that the mud actually is making its way through the BOP. The diagrams indicated it would go in all directions when pumped in, including coming out of the cracks. It is also supposed to go down into the well and push the oil down since it is heavier (I think).

“fangers crossed” indeed!

“Despite what the Fed.gov said, they did NOT bite off more than they could chew!”

If they did`nt bite off more than they could chew, this never would have happened.

I’ve agreed with Jindal’s angry rhetoric about how he should start the dredging without permission, but does anyone know if that has happend?

All the gulf states need to start doing SOMETHING to protect their beaches and waterways, FED permission be damned!

Someone posted a funny link about folks stuck on an escalator on another thread about this spill. It SOOO reflected the mindset of SO many people in this country-
“Big govt. SAVE US!” Got news for you. You are on your OWN!

Sorry but under that kind of pressure it has abrasive qualities. Even the very fine stuff is somewhat abrasive. Think of adding it to a pressure washer and washing your car.

“They have released 500-750,000 gallons of the two dispersants, Corexit EC9500A and Corexit EC9527A. So far dispersants have been used in much greater volume than ever before in US waters. The dispersant goes by the trade name “Corexit.” It’s supposed to be a pun on the words “corrects it.” Corexit is called “Hidez-It” by insiders because its purpose is not to correct but deceive. These facts have been known for decades. Corexit was banned in Great Britian over a decade ago. Corexit is 2.61 in toxicity, which means it’s highly toxic. It has an effectiveness of 54.7. more toxic and less effective than other approved mixtures, has been deployed in large amounts and at great depths in an attempt to break up the oil billowing out of the well head, and on the surface.”

Not to worry!. Some in here think it`s a wonderful chemical and will happily eat (and feed their kids) fish that are contaminated with it.

If big business is behind hit, whether it be Agro, Pharma, or Bil Oil then you can bet a ton of conservatives will back them to the hilt even though these industries are doing great damage to the country and it’s populace at times for nothing more than sheer greed. And by Greed I mean getting your giant swimming pool at the cost of poisoning, harming, and killing people, which happens all the time.

More and more I am finding the cult backing of these industries by conservatives to be not unlike the blind loyalty to Obama, those people backing Obama are stupid, because they too are going to be harmed, the same can be said for the “big industry can do no wrong” conservatives, and most on the FR fall into that industry (and by that I mean better than 51%). So flame on folks !!! Let your rage pour out ...

“From what I have read- which could be inaccurate or I misinterpreted] this dispersant appeared to be the best choice. It is also EPA approved. And was available in sufficient quantity.”

EPA approved. Thats supposed to be reassuring?

“Nicotine is highly toxic, too. But most of us avoid large concentrations and manage to live.”

Too bad the sealife in the gulf won`t be able to avoid the chemicals, with God knows what damage will be done to them and their offspring.

Live feed shows something still spewing...... not sure what. Hope they have reversed the flow and what is spewing out is the fluids that are being injected.

Reporting from Foxnews, the top kill is working and has stopped the flow.

Reporting from Foxnews, the top kill is working and has stopped the flow.

But, live feed seems to belie that news.

Leaving it alone was what I’m advocating, but for using dispersants in open water, the “and all life forms” was tongue in cheek. 600,000 barrels of a strong detergent is nothing in a body of water the volume of the gulf.

won’t they still have the “methane crystals” issue to deal with if they have to use this method?

If NOT, then why didn’t they do this in the beginning?
