Former First Lady Laura Bush has come out against the Arizona immigration law, pointing to the discrimination that her own Irish ancestors, named Welch, faced in their time.
In an interview with Fox News, Bush said the new law merely showed an upsurge in prejudice similar to what her Irish ancestors faced.

Much as I am against illegal immigration, I would not encourage snitching. Its un-American. Let's exercise a bit of logic here, alright?
If you had a next door neighbor who regularly beat her child senseless in her back yard, and you had seen this with your own eyes on more than one occasion, do you think it would be improper of you to report her the the authorities?
Likewise, illegal immigrants are doing great harm to our country by being here. It's illegal because it's harmful - get it?
Looking at illegal immigrants in light of everything I just said, can you see how it would be a good thing for you to report them to the authorities?

At least she had the good sense to keep her leftist opinions to herself while Dubya was President.

Does Laura KNOW the difference between LEGAL and ILLEGAL? ====================
Yes, she does, if you had read the transcript, like half of the others here who obviously haven't, you'd know she respects the law (not to say that she has actually read it, but then, she is not, nor ever has been, an ELECTED OFFICIAL):
WALLACE: Well, I have to ask you, since you brought it up, are you unhappy with the Arizona law?
BUSH: Well, not necessarily. I mean, I think we have to have the immigration laws. And you know, that's a really important part of it. It's just that the debate about the immigration laws, about Arizona's law, end up targeting someone a group of people.
WALLACE: Do you worry that it...
BUSH: And it's this is not new in American history. There have been many groups of immigrants who've been targeted over all of our history the Irish, for instance, when a lot of Irish immigrants, including my family, came to the United States other times and it's just that it's a trait of nativism that shows up in American in American history in a lot of different ways.
====================
Like many Americans who tire of politics, she is bothered by some of the crass discourse. Enforce the law!! We've brought this on by not enforcing our own laws and by not holding our government officials accountable to their sworn duties.

Yes, please pile on to prove her point. Don’t forget the terrorists (al Qaeda) masking as Mexicans. AGAIN, she does not disagree with the law. HELLO? Is there a single literate person out here?! More than 400 posts and practically NO ONE has heard or read what the woman said. Pathetic.

What a dummy. If I were her husband I would be nice and such, but man..I wouldn’t have sex with that one! I think that has been GW’s problem. And Arnold too for that matter. Too much of that womanly love will just transfer softness into any man. Celibacy for me! Unless I had a truly conservative woman and wanted to have kids.

Well, I'll tell you from a man's perspective, it doesn't really mean much if a woman is the most beautiful woman in the world on the outside, if she is ugly and evil on the inside, sex don't mean much.
And my use of the term evil with respect to Mrs. Bush is not hyperbole.
You become what you support, and supporting Abortion and Gay Marriage, and people like this new nominee to the Supreme Court is out and out evil.

What is it about the Bush family (other than they will never fool us again with a national candidate). These people are just downright bad for the conservative cause.

They compromise with evil (Abortion, Gay Marriage, illegal Immigration) and try to pretend that they aren't. Which, in and of itself, is just another form of evil.
I'll bet Mrs. Bush, like most progressives, tells herself she is real enlightened.
All the while claiming to be a Christian, and reveling in the sin of Abortion and Gay Marriage.

I have black hair, dark brown eyes, and my skin, when tanned, is light chocolate brown. I'm short too!
That said, around these parts, most latins are Cubans, who can look about as "Anglo" as your average white American.

I'm saddened to learn that Laura is a liberal. She has conducted herself well as the wife of a president, I must say, and and in a classy and dignified manner. But all these recent revelations about her liberal inclinations are making me sick.
It does make some sense, though, because some of his wife's liberal positions found their way in GW's governing style. I believe that many of GW's liberal polices, like nominating Meyers to the Supreme Court, the bailout, his soft stance on illegal immigration etc, were probably the result of his wife influence on him just a gut feeling since we still have limited information on what went on close to GW during his presidency.
These revelations are shocking, and more importantly they are a big let down. I won't be buying her book and I 'm not at all interested in reading it.

So Laura is in favor of illegal immigration of Irish homosexuals getting married and having abortions in Arizona. She’s nuts.
The only ones in favor of abortion are the ones who are already born. The unborn get no vote in the matter.
Gay marriage is a sinful charade mocking a divine sacrament from the Lord.
Illegal immigration from anywhere is a crime against the citizenry of the nation.
Laura must have pickled her brain in cultural relativism.
Laura’s thinking is an exact match with the Resident’s BS emanating from the Whtie House. Must be nationalist socialist water on tap there.

It's just that the debate about the immigration laws, about Arizona's law, end up targeting someone a group of people. Your transcription of this sentence is correct, while the transcription at IrishCentral.com is wrong. The latter says:
It's just that the debate about immigration laws, about Arizona's law in targeting someone, a group of people...
In the correct transcription she says that "the debate" is targeting a group of people, while in the IrishCentral version, "Arizona's law" is doing the targeting. So, in the second version, her subsequent comments seem to imply that the law is problematic.
Here's the video.
So I think you have a point when you say that Freepers have misinterpreted her words, but in the end I doubt that watching the video would change many Freeper opinions.
Exactly who is generating her ugly debate? She implies that it is coming from "Nativists," meaning conservatives. To Bush, the problem is not that leftist media shills relentlessly lie about the law, but that those damn Nativists won't shut up. Is she getting her talking points from the DNC? She seems to be primarily worried about protecting the delicate sensibilities of immigrants, not about securing the border. That is not a set of priorities that will endear her to conservatives.
Like many Americans who tire of politics, she is bothered by some of the crass discourse. Enforce the law!!
I wish she had said that, but she did not. After watching the interview, I doubt she believes it. But I could be wrong.
