AFL-CIO Leadership Clashes With Union Members Over Arizona Immigration Law
David Horowitz's NewsRealBlog ^ | March 16, 2010 | Liz Blaine

Amid blind support for his left-wing ideology, AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka forgot his claim to represent the “working man” and joined Wade Henderson, President of the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, in a letter this week to Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano, calling for the immediate stop of federal cooperation with Arizona law enforcement officials or,

“be complicit in the racial profiling that lies at the heart of the Arizona law. [S.B. 1070]“

But Trumka’s ideology differs from his union members. Recognizing Trumka’s support for Amnesty as an opportunity to undermine employment opportunities for legal citizens while increasing the union’s voting power and dues, union members are loudly expressing their discontent with leadership on the AFL-CIO’s blog:

The Left is beginning to eat their own. I love the ending:

"A word of advice to union leaders: The assault on real Americans is not without consequence. You too can be isolated, marginalized, and easily replaced."

Popcorn, anyone?

I grew up in a union family.

The union newsletters spewed political venom that seldom was in the best interests of the rank-and-file.

And this was 30+ years ago. I can’t imagine how out-of-touch they must be today.

Rank and file members in Arizona are forced into a position of choosing between their socialist bosses or their state.

Frankly, I have no idea why the rank and file have not been bitching about this for years. Why on earth would they support illegal immigration which would simply dry up jobs and depress wages? From the perspective of the Union leadership I can see why; they just want more dues paying members.

RANK AND FILE.................... WAKE UP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

From the comments on the union blog, it looks like their also being made to choose between a job and the socialist bosses. Many have been out of work and it won't be easy to find a job if millions of illegal aliens are granted amnesty.

None of my union friends support amnesty, they know it does them no good.

Well said! Union members are finally awakening to their leaderships' intent.

Because they are rank and file. Unambitious and not given to thought.

Time for the union slaves to rise up against their masters. Decertification isn’t just something they do in... well anywhere.

***Frankly, I have no idea why the rank and file have not been bitching about this for years.***

We have and it has gotten us nowhere. We organized a plant here 31 years ago in this “Right to Work” state. After years of seeing the union bosses support every sleezy dem, and their hatred of Reagan, Bush, and Bush, most of those people who helped organize our union have abandoned the unions. They still have employement because of the “Right to Work” laws.

This is a simple issue.

Illegal aliens take jobs about from workers. It’s just a fact. Unemployment approaches 20% nationwide and union or non-union, they realize that their jobs and the job opportunities for their children are seriously undercut by illegal employment.

They get paid under the table. They accept serf-level wages. They don’t pay into the system.

And here’s the kicker — if you let this become generational, it WILL LOWER EVERYONE TO SERF-LEVEL standards of living.

Illegal immigration threatens prosperity and the American way of life.

And we’ve not talked of terrorist infiltration and drug lords running drugs across borders.

As a former union member I gotta say you hit that target dead on. Its not that they're naturally that way but because the union intentionally encourages it.

In my former shop, if you were told to work on a job that payed beneath your payscale, you got your regular pay. If you volunteered to work the lower paying job, you were paid at the lower rate because the union wanted it that way.

Unions suck the life out of ambition and creativity.

Decertification can be a very difficult process to say the least, particularly in compulsory union states.

Its one thing to decertify a small, single site union shop. But when you consider multi-site bargaining units like grocery store chains, the degree of organization that is required is just beyond the ability and efforts that the employees are willing and able to do.

Considering the fact that the international unions are experts in the matter of fighting these efforts legally, most employees who are disgusted with the union would be more likely just to find another job and quit.

I think if we got some real labor law reform, to simplify the decert process, or to make it possible for a single store in a chain to decertify, you’d see a lot more.
