Betten's beat is crime prevention. Antonia showed him pictures of the Clay County home invasion scene.
"I can tell you right away what failed. You can see the dead-bolt assembly is still intact, and what failed was the door frame," Betten said.
Betten pushed for an ordinance requiring good locks and reinforced door frames, hinges and doors on Overland Park homes.
"It's a good general rule of thumb that if we can keep them out for at least 30 seconds, frustrate them long enough that generally by that time, they'll abandon the attack," Betten said.
If an intruder gets in, call 911, Betten said.
"Get out of the house and get into an area where you can yell, scream and draw attention to yourself," Betten said.
Betten cautions using a weapon as protection because it is crucial to keep intruders out to begin with. Betten has collected home-security information from what kind of hardware makes doorways stronger to windows, alarms and lighting.

Why do "professionals" advise everyone to have a fire extinguisher and smoke detectors but no guns, when the chances of a violent attack are much higher than that of a house fire.
Unbelievable.
When seconds count, the police are just minutes (or hours) away.
Doesn't sound like a victim to me.
Our police response time is about 30 minutes. One had better have something better than a loud scream.
If screaming were so damned effective compared to a gun, then I would expect to see unarmed cops all over the place, screaming at bad guys.
Someone needs to post a Youtube clip of a real time break in scenario using this advice using actors. My guess is that the person on the phone **might** be able to dial 911 and possibly (just possibly) get a few words out before they are attacked.
And that’s a maybe.
This is terrible advice.
A .410 is pretty effective or your neighbors have had armed confrontations with “home invaders” already you have a bit more protection in that robbers etc will avoid your. A big dog is effective and also provides something for the police to shoot when they come out to investigate the break-in. That way they don’t have to shoot you or your wife.
Or you can ignore this idiotic “professional” and get cans of wasp spray. It’s cheap, effective at short range, and nobody sees it coming (literally). Carry two so you have a backup.
Nope. Not at THIS house.
But this DID give me an idea in case of an attempted home invasion...
I just put the Coroner's Office on speed dial.
Leftists (especially European leftists) are advised to thank their intruders/attackers/rapists for showing them the oppressive influence of the white male heteronormative hegemony against the underclass.
Because they could care less about your life or your safety.
They want their "subjects" to be constantly afraid and in peril so as to be clamorous for more protection from their "benign benefactor", the Government. Thus they can get more money and power while we have less freedom and liberty.
The next thing they see will be the flash from the business end of my Remington 870 Tactical. This is a bird shot free zone.
How bout just pull out your gun and fire? That works for me.
Cut out the middleman.

LOL!!!!!
That’s not sporting. You’re supposed to hug a thug.
Did you read the comments? Sounds like the good people of Kansas City aren’t buying this advice either.
