Raquel Welch has blamed the Pill for the decline of the institution of marriage.
The Hollywood actress said the widespread use of oral contraceptives had led to a breakdown in sexual morality and fuelled the growth of rampant promiscuity among the young.
Miss Welch, 69, said the situation has grown so grave that 'these days nobody seems able to keep it in their pants or honour a commitment'
While she argued that it carried some benefits, she said the enduring legacy of the Pill has been social anarchy.
Miss Welch has been a sex symbol since she sprang to international fame for her role in the 1966 film One Million Years BC - and was voted by readers of Playboy magazine as 'the most desired female of the 1970s'.
But in an article to mark the introduction of the Pill to the U.S. market 50 years ago, she distanced herself from the fruits of the sexual revolution of which she was a part. 'The growing proliferation of birth control methods has had an awesome effect on both sexes and led to a sea change in moral values,' she said in an article for television channel CNN entitled 'It's SexO'Clock in America'. A positive consequence of the Pill was it had 'made it easier for a woman to choose to delay having children until after she established herself in a career', she said. Miss Welch, who has three failed marriages behind her, added that a 'significant and enduring' effect on women was the idea that they could have sex without any consequences - with the result that fewer today saw marriage as a 'viable option'.

She might as well not being wearing anything at all in that pic
Sadly, today she’d be considered fat!
People do not want every sex act to result in pregnancy, for most people, 2 or 3 of those in a lifetime is enough.
In women's magazines yes, but in men's magazines, she is perfect.
Condoms go back many centuries, perhaps thousands of years even, they never caught on.
What is wrong with science developing something better than putting a layer of material over the sex organ?
nothing. but the pill does do horrible things to the health of women.
the burden is on the woman. having 10 kids is great if you can afford them and want them.
I never wanted one after being married a few years and my husband also changed his mind about being a father.
the options are kinda limited.
I misunderstood you.
When I was talking about the pill and condoms, I was meaning in the bigger, wider, more general world of human sexuality.
Condoms make great sense as an option on the individual level, I just meant that they were not a culture changing type device, as of course we know, after a few hundred years of having them available.
I would think that most of us have tried them out during our lives, and gave up on them.
I agree- she looks fabulous today and she’s put on a few pounds esp. in the legs and calves, which only makes her look more curvaceous and beautiful. I would NOT mind being married to her-maybe the other guys were closet liberals;)
I guess not if you think that condoms are something modern and culture changing.
Should men trust a woman who says she’s taking the pill. It is the same thing to me.
From the linked Daily Mail article:
The film star, who was linked to a string of men in her heyday - including Elvis Presley, Dean Martin and Burt Bacharach - said she would urge women to feel comfortable with growing old.
Not being much of a celebrity-watcher, I wouldn't know about Dean Martin or Burt Bacharach, but I believe that Elvis was quite conservative in many ways. One of his great passions was religious and particularly Gospel music and he was proud of his military service.
That being said, I think that Raquel Welch would provide 'unique' challenges for any marriage simply due to the fact that every healthy, single man on the planet would do just about anything to have her on his arm, and more. She has spent her life being the quintessential 'sexual lightning rod', and I can hardly imagine the sort of pressures that sort of intensity would have on her as well as those close to her.
Far lower pressures have claimed many celebrities as suicides, drug addicts and has ruined untold numbers of marriages....perhaps hers as well.
Gilder argues that the contraceptive mentality will lead inevitably to the suicide of a civilization.
I appreciate the recommendation, thank you :-)
I think the premise as you articulate it is demonstrably sound, and it’s something that the West in particular needs to be far more mindful of, particularly considering the threat of Islam.
Muslims are breeding like rabbits while so many in the West are content with preventing pregnancies or in murdering unborn children outright. Our numbers diminish while the muslim hordes continue to grow. Pat Buchanan wrote about that in “Death of the West” and Mark Steyn touched on that theme in at least a couple of his books. It’s a huge problem that we need to address immediately or we risk losing everything.
I remember when Elvis went into the Army and Cassius Clay refused. I respected Elvis and despised Cassius.
You’re a “father of 10” even if the 10th isn’t breathing the air yet ;-). Best wishes for the next few weeks.
People don't expect every act to result in pregnancy, because that is never how it has worked. However, in a healthy system, people should expect that any given act could result in pregnancy and they should view that possibility positively. I can't remember the thrill of every act leading the conception of my children, but I can state with absolute conviction that the fact that they were conceived was far more important, consequential and beneficial to me and the rest of Creation than the fact that I was sexually gratified. If, when you make love to your spouse, you think about how you might be enriching eternity, it gives sex the greater intimacy and deeper meaning that it deserves. It is common idea among people that when you die, your life flashes before your eyes. I say, in your imagination, just for a moment, let the unfathomable lives of your unconceived children and childrens' children for countless generations flash before your eyes during sex. It will blow your mind.
for most people, 2 or 3 of those in a lifetime is enough.
If that were true throughout history, humanity would have perished. Enough for what or who? Who am I to deprive souls of their existence? Though having children pleases me, I don't do it merely to please myself. They are not pets. They are created by God, in his images, to worship and love him forever. They will work, prosper, learn, experience, explore, discover, defend, invent, love, cooperate, live, vote conservatively and reproduce. Please don't deprive them and the rest of the world. Be fruitful and multiply!
It's call a "vasectomy".
I really don’t know what you are trying to push, my best guess is that it has nothing to do with a good male pill, but is more that you are against all birth control.
I say that because you keep ignoring the switch on, switch off use of a male pill.
