TRENDING: Palin irks her supporters with California endorsement (RINO Carly Fiorina)

Washington (CNN) – Sarah Palin broke ranks with the conservative movement on Thursday and endorsed former Hewlett-Packard CEO Carly Fiorina in California's Republican Senate primary, prompting a flurry of criticism from many of her loyal supporters.

After Palin announced the endorsement on her Facebook page, a number of her followers questioned why she would side with Fiorina instead of the more conservative candidate in the race, Assemblyman Chuck DeVore.

DeVore has the backing of several leading voices in the conservative movement, including Sen. Jim DeMint, RedState.com editor Erick Erickson and the Tea Party Express.

Though a handful of readers agreed with Palin's decision, most were upset.

"This is very, very disappointing," Rick Sheridan, one of her supporters, posted on Palin's page. "Sarah, you've got to be more careful. This woman does not represent conservative values. And the choice is so clear. Serious damage to your base here."

"Wow, Sarah...I'm saddened and shocked by your decision to endorse Carly Fiorina," commented another backer, Jennifer Goode. "Had you done your research, you would have found that Chuck DeVore is the ONLY true conservative in the California Senate race."

I'll reward Sarah for results on this one.

If Fiorina cuts Boxer's throat in the general I'll not criticize her, but otherwise I'll be mad as a wet hen.

I'll not be investing any money in Carly, but I will support DeVore.

What doe Jesus have to do with the politics in California? Is he responsible for a deaf dumb and blind legislature?

The only problem I have with Carly is her support for islam/muslims. Don’t know if she still feels the same way, but if so, that’s a major roadblock in my opinion.

I believe this may indicate Palin is serious about running for president and winning.

No matter how hard it may be for FReepers to admit it, no one can win the presidency with only conservative (or GOP) votes. Sarah can get the GOP nomination with only conservative support, but that won’t win her the Oval Office. She needs the support of moderates and some dems and liberals to win a general election.

I believe this may show she is no moving to shore up support among those members of the electorate who are not 100 percent conservative. Thus, it indicates she is serious about winning the presidency.

Once Sarah is in the Oval Office we can depend on her to govern as a true conservative.

That’s the reasoning that gave us Arnold over McClintock.

All that it amounts to is that the GOP ‘moderates’ insist that we all vote for their candidate.

Amen! Judge them by the actions, not their rhetoric.

Remember, the goal is to win.

Electing a pro-abortion candidate with an (R) after her name is not my definition of winning.

Millions more would agree with me -- if they only had the chance to.

Perfect post. I have tried to have a rational approach to Palin in my posts only to be skewered with emotionally irrational groupie-speak.

We need to take care of the midterms and let the candidates emerge for 2012. Her endorsements are part of the process. If, based on those endorsements her true self emerges, then all the better for us to make a decision.

After what Carly did to HP I wouldn’t support her for anything no matter who endorses her. Palin screwed this one up, and almost starting to turn GOP lackey.

“I said it seems Sarah admires certain personal success stories over certain ideological purities”

BINGO! ... The reality is that Palin is not a deep convicted conservative like many of her followers.
Carly endorsement makes sense if you are a conservative-willing-to-overlook some things.

Carly is 2nd in polls to a RINO, DeVore is 3rd in polls.
Carly is getting pro-life endorsements, even though she is not prolife ... because they have calculated DeVore wont win and they dont want the RINO to win.

DeVore is the most conservative candidate, though, and the conservative choice is DeVore.

Palin is right. We can either support someone who actually has a chance at beating boxer...or we can support someone who has no chance at beating boxer...

Palin is right in the fact she can endorse anyone she so chooses. I am amazed that people seem to want a leader who will unquestioningly obey their every demand.

I mean we only elected Reagan as governor, whereas you gave us Dubya and LBJ.

We also gave us many, many conservatives and still do. But since Reagan, it's been Boxer, and Pelosi and their ilk on CA's scorecard. The CA of today is not the CA that gave us Reagan.

“With the Governor comes money and power. Winning in California trumps the pettiness of RINO accusations.”

Uh, we heard that when Arnold was first running ... and boy did that turn out disappointing.

Gov Christie OTOH is the real ‘Terminator’.

Well, your response is exactly my point. I agree there are certain exigencies with respect to politics; however, you do not have to relinquish your convictions to do something about your options. Example, one in the public eye might just keep silent.

I fully understand your sentiment and well meaning. I felt like that once, too. I was coerced into holding my nose and voting for McLame against my better resolve. Now, we are left with a tyrant of unimaginable proportions. Me personally, I feel like I caught the worst case of Herpes from that experience and that there isn't any dosage or amount of ValTrex that can cure it.

Regardless, I am not condemning you re: your approach....we do need to win. For me, I am concerned not only with winning, but how we do it - if that is possible.

Same song, different day.

Reagan was deemed too conservative to win the nomination. The moderates supported George HW Bush, John Anderson, Howard Baker, Bob Dole, even Lowell Weicker.
