Sarah Palin Confronted Reporters at Time 100
NY MAGAZINE ^ | Wednesday May 5, 2010 | Daily intel

Posted on 05/05/2010 4:11:31 PM PDT by Bigtigermike

Bill Clinton and Prince may have been at last night's Time 100 gala, but the most buzzed-about guest by far was Sarah Palin (who, by the way, practically sat on her hands after Clinton gave a speech). Photographers, fans, and, yes, reporters like us swarmed her from the second she walked in the room with husband Todd and her 9-year-old daughter Piper. Judd Apatow and Leslie Mann practically jumped her for a photo op — though, granted, they did the same to Betty White.

Ten minutes of complete engulfment later, Piper was clinging to her mother, repeatedly asking if they could "leave already." Todd, for his part, was standing far away, obediently letting Sarah have the spotlight and plotting to help Piper "meet Taylor Swift; that's the No. 1 priority, to make Piper happy."

Sarah, on the other hand, was happy to be in a room with so many reporters — particularly Time's Joe Klein, of whom she is a fan — so she could set the record straight. "I did talk to a couple of reporters already and said that a bunch of stuff that they write is bogus, but we had a great conversation about it and we agreed to disagree on a lot of things," she said. "One thing we can all agree on, though, is how much we respect and want to protect the freedom of the press and we have that in common, so at the end of the day, I think as long as we’re protecting that and not abusing the right — we have to be writing truth — then we’ll get along just fine tonight."

Particularly, she wanted to clear up "the bogus reports about how much money I supposedly make," she said. "I have a business. I run a business with my speaker’s fee."

As if to drive home the point, Palin reiterated her great respect for journalism in her public "toast" to those who influence her, a Time 100 dinner tradition. "I want to make a toast to all at this press event who agree with Thomas Jefferson, who said that our liberty depends on the freedom of the press," she said. "So I want to lift a glass to those who defend that freedom. Our finest, the men and women in uniform who defend that freedom, our Constitution, and our exceptional way of life in America."

As she left the dinner, after watching a performance by Prince, Palin said she'd had a lovely time, both at the dinner and in New York. "Every time I’m here I have to go running in Central Park," she said. "I ran around an hour; I think I ran around the park a couple of times!" Todd told us he'd accompanied her, but could not recall how far Sarah had run in an hour. "You'll have to ask her," he said. "She jogs at a pretty good pace, so I guess a few miles." Who's faster, of the two? "It's not about being fastest. It's about who has the energy and can go the distance," said Todd, patiently standing to the side and watching Sarah, as usual. "One mile is good enough for me."

When Jonathan Goldsmith retires Todd Palin can take his place as The Most Interesting Man in the World. He can cure narcolepsy just by walking into the room, you know ;)

I LOVE that they take Piper with them everywhere they go. The Time 100 snooty black tie dinner may as well have been potluck at the church. Can't wait for that kid to grow up and write an autobiography. And, I imagine Sarah being a "fan" of Joe Klein was said with tongue firmly in cheek.

I liked Proposal, but I hope that Sarah saw the even better “Blind Side”...now that is a superior movie.

Sarah is just following the example of the master, Ronaldus Magnus, who was always friendly with the press jackals including his chief tormentor, Sam Donaldson. (No doubt this drove Sam up a tree because he couldn't under Uncle Ronnie's skin the way Dan Rather and company got under Nixon's.)

However, do not mistake friendly for the lack of ability to defend oneself which was the George W Bush malady. He too, was friendly with his tormentors, but unlike Reagan and Palin smacking the media right back while smiling, W was simply incapable of saying, "Boys, you got that wrong and I'm going to take you to task on it as will my boys (post-Ari Fleisher, of course)." W being friendly with the media and the RATS was infuriating because he never defended himself and looked like a doormat. There's a lot to be said for not allowing criticism to sway you, but that doesn't mean you should silently endure it.

Sarah doesn't silently endure it. She smiles, smacks them back and then continues doing what she was doing.

All that you say is true. Palin has to appear to be above it all and not take the lies written about her personally, which I am sure is very difficult. It probably also just kills her many enemies to see her so gracious.

My “huh?” was more in response to the wording. In her position, I would lie and say something like, “I respect Mr. Klein’s talent.” But describing her as a fan just seemed so odd. That’s all I meant by that. I, personally, would pay good money to slap Klein’s arrogant, lying face. Good thing I’m not a public figure, huh?

...Joe Klein, of whom she is a fan....

&&& Huh?

It is not unusual to enjoy reading lefty writing. Except for her jaunts into detailing deviancy and erotica, I enjoy reading Camille Paglia's work. It is well written and reasoned. She just starts out with the wrong premises.

Michael Kelly (RIP) was a true moderate who honestly tried to see what Pat Buchanan and Alan Keyes were about. I felt like I was reading honest reporting when I read him.

I am embarrassed to say that when not on political topics, Teri Gross of NPR can be an excellent interviewer. She asks questions that I would want to ask.

She also gets pwned every once in a while. Once was when those Brit gals from "What Not to Wear" challenged her to not be afraid of her own femininity, and the infamous time when she met Gene Simmons' (of Kiss) raw epicurean outlook (extremely vulgar) with condescension, and it didn't work. If she had an ounce of self-respect she would have killed his mic and kicked him out.

It may well be, but I doubt it, based on the tone of the rest of the piece.

Contemplating Sarah's kids being raped (BOYCOTT LETTERMAN) isn't bad because, you know, it wouldn't be like 'rape-rape' (thanks for the clarification there, Whoopie).

It's disgusting how these horrid horrid things can be said about Sarah and her children, and *no one* in the MSM comes to their defense ("Oh, well, SHE put herself AND her kids in the public eye so they're fair game!") but the one and only time (that I know of) where anyone made fun of one of HolyO's 'mistakes' (over cheap, trashy clothing worn to a government function) and the MSM goes all "THAT'S RACIST!!!" on people. < shakes head > Hypocrites. >:-(

Yeah, that was pretty funny. First Dude clearly has more stamina than his wife concerning physical competitions (not trashing Sarah here, by any means, from all I've heard and the physical condition she's in, she's a fantastic runner!) but look at him--not trying to 'steal her thunder' or limelight, letting her SHINE :-)

I can't WAIT for this wonderful couple and their great kids to move into the White House (after it's been cleaned of cigarette smoke, skateboard tracks, etc.) in 2013!!! :-)

I give her a pass simply because she’s awesome (and isn’t all in your face with politics).

And I hope when she is President she doesn't go to the Presidents Press Diner, Cuts off the Xmas Party for them and holds parties for our wounded Vets, and those who have overcome real obstacle in America.

The Press is a pac of ungreatful bastard jackels and should be shunned. Thei,r I said it.

And one more thing...

Swear in on Jan 20th and no parties at all and begin with massive exective orders to overturn or defund everything she can that Obozo did.

Like when she spoke respectfully of mitt romney when she was in Mass even after the 20 months of spineless, gutless insults from anonymous romney aides.
