SANTA ANA - Residents and activists advocating for immigrants' rights marched through downtown Santa Ana Saturday afternoon to protest Arizona's new policy on illegal immigration.
The momentum of the rally picked up about noon, when 300 people representing SEIU Local 1877 came marching into the plaza from the group's office at 1200 N. Main St. Wearing purple shirts with the words "Justice for Janitors" written on them, demonstrators looped around a fountain outside City Hall before joining other attendees at the central gathering point.
Silvia Hernandez, an internal organizer with the union, said that many of those present are custodians at Disneyland or work nights cleaning some of Orange County's most prestigious offices.
She said they are here to urge President Obama and legislators to pass some sort of comprehensive immigration reform.
"They (legislators) work for us," she said. "It's about time that they do."
"We need to feel welcome, like other immigrants in the past. People have to remember that. They can't close the doors on us now."

“Wetbacks for Welfare”
They get coverage for “hundreds” showing up (rent-a-mob). The Tea Parties have thousands of authentic citizens protesting and barely rate a mention (albeit a snide mention at that). Sheesh!
We need to deport or imprison ALL illegals, seal the border, and have an armed response to those who would recross illegally. We won’t do it of course; Obama is too busy developing an armed response to the Tea Party gatherings.
And I don’t see anything about how vioent and racist these illegal immigrant protests are.
What don’t these illiterates understand about illegal.
Sorry sweetheart, they don’t work for you. They work for LEGAL immigrants and citizens.
>> The Tea Parties have thousands of authentic citizens protesting
Oh no....they’re Astroturf because they nailed their hand-lettered sign to a 1x2 that could have been purchased from Home Depot, which represents Big Hardware.
WOW! 100,000 expected but a no show.
>>”We need to feel welcome, like other immigrants in the past.”
Are they talking about the immigrants in the past that came here legally, sacrificed for generations to become successful, learned the language, and were almost never a burden on the nation? Do you want to be like them? Please...DO!
Immigrants who come through the front door are welcome, the ones who kick in the backdoor and bust in through the windows are the ones that are at issue.
Obviously there were hardly any out yesterday!
Who said illegals had to cross into Arizona to get to California? Bee line it straight to California and quit whining.
I’d like to go protest illegal immigration in Santa Ana, Mexico (Southwest of Mexico City). But I might get arrested, as foreign nationals are not allowed to participate in political protest. In fact, if I were illegal I could be detained by any citizen, and may be convicted of a felony.
In Mexico.
Reciprocal laws NOW.
I think they would do well to remember what happened to Santa Ana.
LET ME SEE IF I GOT THIS RIGHT!!!

Wasn’t it thousands just the other day?
Give it another week or two and it will be dozens instead of hundreds.
