Times Square Block Shut Down

NYPD closed off streets from 42nd to 47th along Broadway in New York City. Police shut down a block in the heart of Times Square Saturday night after receiving a call about a suspicious car fire, delaying some Broadway shows by more than an hour.

The call came in just after 6:30 and as of 9 p.m., 45th Street between Seventh and Eighth avenues had not been opened. When police initially responded, they saw smoke coming out of the car but no fire.

Police said a bomb squad investigation was on the scene and that the car on fire was a sport utility vehicle had license plates that didn't match the make of the car, raising suspicions.

On one of the theater district's busiest nights, some shows, including "The Lion King," were delayed by an hour or more, according to the Broadway World website.

Oprah Winfrey was in attendance of the new hit "Fela," being shown at the Eugene O'Neill Theatre on West 49th Street, and the production began on time and wasn't interrupted.

“The vehicle has no VIN number”

Probably just removed the VIN plate on the dash. The VIN should be located in a couple of other areas (my car, for example, has the VIN etched into the door windows in addition to the VIN plate).

According to the mayor, no one saw a man running from the car. Reporters asked a couple times during the press conference.

U.S., Britain issue Mumbai warnings

New Delhi, India (CNN) — The U.S. Embassy and the British Foreign Office warned their citizens about the possibility of terror attacks in India.

“There are increased indications that terrorists are planning imminent attacks in New Delhi,” the U.S. alert said Saturday. “Terrorists have targeted places in the past where U.S. citizens or Westerners are known to congregate or visit.”

The British warning had similar wording Saturday.

Yes. The first guy who spoke said they found (IIRC) 3 propane tanks, 2 filled 5-gallon containers of gasoline, and a large gun locker that they were taking somewhere (I can’t recall where) to be detonated.

FEDS: The Times Square car bomb does NOT appear to be terrorism

So shutting down central NYC is not an act of terrorism.

I’m pretty sure they think it is terrorism. The mayor said as much as said that when he pointed out that NYC is a major destination of terrorists.

If this was not an act of terrorism, then the New York Police are just on a practice run, for they are still ordering full inspections of all suspicious packages and the police stations are to be checked inside and out.

What ever the ‘convoy’ is, they have massive vehicles with the ‘package’.

No traffic is being allowed near it from any direction.

Don't know if this is because of the hour or what. Wonder if midtown traffic is any worse than usual - since they converted streets to pedestrian malls.
