Archie Comic Publications announced it is adding a gay teen to its popular U.S. comic book series.
Kevin Keller -- described as openly gay -- will make his debut at Riverdale High Sept. 1 as part of Veronica Comics No. 202, "Isn't It Bromantic?," the New York publishers announced in a news release.
Archie Comics Editor Victor Gorelick told The Washington Post, "Everyone seems to know where Kevin is coming from except Veronica."
And they don't tell her right away, he added.
"They let her stew in it for a while. But he hangs out with Jughead -- they seem to have a connection as far as food goes," he said.
In a news release announcing the new character, Archie Comics Co-Chief Executive Officer Jon Goldwater said the introduction of Kevin keeps the series "current and inclusive."
"Archie's hometown of Riverdale has always been a safe world for everyone," he said. "It just makes sense to have an openly gay character in Archie comic books."
Archie has lived this long because of parents who knew it.
Oh, no, what the heck did they do to Stargate? They lost me when Jack left, but at least I thought it was fairly wholesome.
Uhh, yeah.. I've always wondered about that Jughead.
The hilarity will continue in the upcoming issue, "Hot Tub Hi-Jinx!"
Looks like he’s the only one with a lifelike face. All the Archie regulars look like toons. PC? Or propaganda?
The next character will be a lesbian and/or a "transgender"... you can bet on it. :-(
On the latest incarnation, Stargate:Universe, one of the main characters, played by Ming-Na, is a lesbian. It’s relatively understated IMO.
"Jughead is known for his lack of interest in girls, which sets him apart from Archie and Reggie."
There was a thread about this a few days ago. As sickening as it is, I truly wonder how much a problem it will be, as I am wondering how many kids actually buy comic books these days. I was, frankly, surprised to learn that this series is still published.
It’s sad. When I was reading Archie comics at around the age of 8 I don’t even think I knew what a homosexual was, and I’ll bet many of today’s older gay activists didn’t either. Times have changed and not for the better.
It was the only comic I grew up with that I could buy my 8 and 9 year olds that I didn’t have to read cover to cover and worry about.
I guess the market demands they wreck even Archie Comics now.
OK then.
Maybe that's how they plan on solving the Social Security shortfalls in the future.
Mine love them. Totally surprised. They use them EXACTLY as I did - hide them under your pillow, and after lights out, you take them out and read them with a flashlight.
They don’t know that I know, and I’d never stop them from doing that. I’m convinced Iron Man comics are why I became an EE.
That the practitioners of homosexual behavior have gone from socially-unacceptable pariahs 50 years ago to receiving legal protections beyond what straight citizens are given and celebrated as if they were something more than sad, confused human beings living a degenerate lifestyle that promises only disease, heartbreak and an early, painful death, today, is amazing and indicative of how far American culture has fallen.
Archie comics, which began during WWII, may be a dinosaur franchise desperate to remain 'relevant' but to see this once decent kids entertainment devolve into a propaganda tool now used to 'normalize' homosexual behavior by introducing an attractive, benign character and presenting him as a homosexual, definitely signals a tacit approval (by the owners of the franchise) of homosexual behavior.
Yes, it's sad for those of us who grew up with 'Archie' comics but at this point, I'm not surprised, just disgusted. If this is what they consider 'entertainment' for kids, I hope 'Archie' is soon retired - and forgotten.
Sadly, I read a more current Archie Comics a couple years ago and was disappointed to see they updated some of the wardrobe and times a bit. I liked it being timelessly stuck somewhere between the ‘50s and ‘60s. I might get a copy, but a used copy before 1990.
