Archie Comic Publications announced it is adding a gay teen to its popular U.S. comic book series.
Kevin Keller -- described as openly gay -- will make his debut at Riverdale High Sept. 1 as part of Veronica Comics No. 202, "Isn't It Bromantic?," the New York publishers announced in a news release.
Archie Comics Editor Victor Gorelick told The Washington Post, "Everyone seems to know where Kevin is coming from except Veronica."
And they don't tell her right away, he added.
"They let her stew in it for a while. But he hangs out with Jughead -- they seem to have a connection as far as food goes," he said.
In a news release announcing the new character, Archie Comics Co-Chief Executive Officer Jon Goldwater said the introduction of Kevin keeps the series "current and inclusive."
"Archie's hometown of Riverdale has always been a safe world for everyone," he said. "It just makes sense to have an openly gay character in Archie comic books."
is victor related to jamie?
What’s next? “Beetle Bailey”? ...don’t bother Cookie. He’s cooking up something special for Zero’s and his 1st anniversary.
Kevin Jennings is Safe Schools Czar, he wrote the forward for “Queering Elementary Education”. He has been a radical gay activist in education for a long time.
Of course they want to force it on kids.
Whats next for Archie? An illegal alien character? A transgendered parapalegic who likes animals? A pedophile?
There is no reason for a comic directed at children to have an openly gay character. It is pushing the gay lifestyle on children
Considering that superhero comics have been ‘treating’ us to openly gay characters for well over a decade, this doesn’t really manage to be much in the way of news IMO. It doesn’t make it good, but honestly it is behind the curve.
Poor Archie, losing out to the smooth gay guy
The most shocking part of this to me is that Archie comics are still being made. Really those things were ancient when I was a kid 30 odd years ago.
>Whats next? Beetle Bailey? ...dont bother Cookie. Hes cooking up something special for Zeros and his 1st anniversary.
You shouldn’t pick on one of the few actually conservative comics writers. Beetle Bailey won’t have any such nonsense as that as long as Mort Walker continues to write it. Of course he’s getting pretty old and goodness only knows what will happen if a successor takes over.
The death rattle from a dying industry. Its one last grab for the almighty buck. Sorry boys, it’s over.
Next year look for them to introduce Veronica’s new friend ‘Pat’, a female-to-male transexual who has undergone a double masectomy. Just what little kids want to read about.
(Cookie offer subject to verification and worming my way out of it as I really don't want to mail out any cookies.)
Too late by a decade, remember General Halftrack got into trouble with sexual harassment and had to go through sensitivity training
Archie Comics is really cutting edge with the youth of today, what with their zoot suits and malt shops.
They soon add a transexual Nazi Eskimo to their cast of characters.
>Too late by a decade, remember General Halftrack got into trouble with sexual harassment and had to go through sensitivity training
Don’t really see how this makes me wrong. If anything he was mocking sensitivity training.
Then of course, they will have a few pregnant teens, couple of crack-heads, and parents living off of welfare, junior govt green-police and the like. However, they will praise 0dumbo for his ‘nobel prize’ and “..all the wonderful things he does. Weee are off to see the Wizard...”
Seems like every day, America dies a bit more.
I tend to read a lot of sci-fi and fantasy paperback braincandy for grins. The typical approach now is a series of books, rather than stand alone.
In the past 12 - 15 years a number of these series have started, gotten traction, and done quite well until this tired theme is forced in with the introduction of a new character or the outing of an old one. This has lead over and over to the collapse of that series, sort of a literary Dixie Chicks thing.
Look for this comic to be moribund in a couple of years, if it is still published at all.
“Too late by a decade, remember General Halftrack got into trouble with sexual harassment and had to go through sensitivity training”
I forgot that. You are right.
That's brilliant.
