EUDORA Four hundred pounds of beef jerky cools in the stainless steel smoker in the back room. ...
The Pyle Meat Co. has been a family operation since it opened, but a drop in jerky sales is forcing it to close.
Tom Pyle, left, watches his son Tom Pyle Jr. package some of the last beef jerky Thursday at Pyle Meat Co. in Eudora. The company was in business for 50 years but is closing its doors as a result of the recession. ...
A lot of times, Pyle says, when people have something like this happen, they blame the bank or somebody. But Im not blaming anybody. Im just saying it is a sign of the times. It is whats happening. ...
Shes taking this really hard, said Pyle. She tries to be brave around me, but this is her hometown, these are her kids. It is hard on me, but Im at the practical part because of the money. Ive got an obligation to support her, which is what I told her dad when I asked for his permission to marry her. Im still going to hold onto that pledge. ...
But still, maybe. Much has changed in the business world of late. But Pyle is still convinced the secret to a business success still remains relatively simple.
You know, a fellows bread and butter is making someone happy, Pyle says. Thats still your bread and butter.

Is the dehydrator useful for fish?
I wouldn't go overboard with the fat though. Also if you are using a jerky gun (pretty cheap at Wal Mart), people seem to prefer the tube "slim jim" pieces of jerky vice the thin strips. I usually make half and half.
Dehydrator and packets of spice. Check. What cut of meat do you like?
#873485 item number.
Jack Links 3 4oz bags for $9.22...
Thank you Dennis Moore you and the Rat party congress are helping kill small businesses across America. No Jobs and nobody cane even afford to buy beef jerly.
I believe it is a Nesco 5 tray dehydrator (I'm not at the house to check and won't be for quite some time) that she bought at Kohls on Black Friday (or at least similar too it).

COSTCO had an awesome sale on strawberries (my strawberries failed last year)... so I bought a bunch. I blended them and poured them into the fruit tray (the tray with the pink stuff in it at the link is on a fruit tray); no sugar, no nothing. The result is like a papery fruit roll up. It takes several hours to dry fruit, but my 2 year old loved- LOVED Dad's homemade fruit roll ups. They were a bit tart; adding sugar would probably help, but he didn't mind.
Apple chips are good too. Slice up some apples, dip them in 2 parts water, 2 parts honey, and dehydrate.
Looking back, I might have bought one of the bigger ones. But, this is mainly because I #1 like instant gratification and want it all done NOW and #2 Because I don't have a lot of time. But, it works and I'm satisfied with it.
I love America.
Then I'll run it through a hand crank meat grinder (or if I'm allowed to use the wife's kitchenaid). Add the seasoning and stir. Let sit 4 hours and stuff into jerky gun (plastic translucent thing resembling a caulking gun). Squeeze onto tray; dehydrate.
Gotcha. Need: Dehydrator, spices, hunting license, gun, ammo, and a place to hunt : )!
Jack Links is edible but doesn’t even come close to Hombre.
So Jim starts his first day at Meglo-Mart. The manager tells Jim he can start his first day at the sporting goods section; the manager would check on him at the end of the shift.
So, 6:30 rolls around and the manager asks Jim how everything went. Jim replies he only had one customer. "One customer! One customer, this is the sporting goods section at peak season!"
Jim responds that the one custome spent $63,456.72. Exasperated the manager wanted to know how Jim sold one customer $63K in sporting goods.
Jim says "Well, I showed the guy some fish hooks. Then I said you can't go fishing without a fishing license, some bait, and fishing poles. Then there was bobbers, sinkers, and other tackle. Some fish are heavy and he didn't want to break his new pole, so I sold him a net. Then I told him all the best fish are caught by boat. So I sold him a boat and trailer. He also needed emergency oars, a life vest, an anchor, gps, and fish finder. Then he realized his car couldn't pull the trailer with the boat on it, so I sold him a new Ford F-250."
The manager exclaimed "You sold all of that to a guy trying to buy some fish hooks!!!????"
Jim replied "Well, no not exactly. He actually asked me were the tampons were. I said hey, your weekends shot, you might as well go fishing."
LOL. Exactamundo!
Not familiar with Hombre, but then I don’t buy much store bought jerky because of expense, and it cannot match the home made for good flavor. Is it a brand as popular or well known as jack links? Frankly I can’t stand Jack Links. Just tastes weird to me. One of the companies in South Dakota that makes buffalo jerky does an outstanding job, but it isn’t cheap either.
Hombre is the name of the ‘micro’ jerky from the Pyle meat Co., only available in the Topeka to Kansas City area. If they are not bought outright I hope they can license their recipe to someone who will stay true to it.
I should say only avail in the Topeka - KC area via retail. One could also order it online.
Handing Jack Links to someone lamenting the loss of Hombre is like consoling someone lamenting the loss of their neighborhood Ruth’s Chris with a McDonalds cheeseburger.
Agree with you assessment of Jack Links. So many varieties none of which taste good to me. I’m not willing to pay for the privilege of tasting them all to see if there is one I do like. Sounds to me like Pyle should have gone nation wide, but then who knows maybe the product would have suffered.
