Hi FReepers. Our first Grandchild was born last Friday, April 2nd. We knew ahead of time from the ultrasounds that he has a very serious congenital heart defect called Hypoplasitc Right Heart Syndrome (HRHS). Basically, it means that the right side of the heart is not fully developed.
Up until about 25 years ago this condition was 100% fatal. Now, thanks to a procedure developed in the 1980's, many children are able to survive. The oldest survivors are now in their 20's. So we are optimistic.
The procedure is a series of three open heart surgeries; the first right after birth, the second at 3 to 6 months old, and the third between age 2 and 3. Should he survive the surgeries, he will likely be on heart medicines for the rest of his life, and possibly need a heart transplant somewhere down the line.
Because he was born over 7 lbs. (he is otherwise very healthy), they have been able to delay the first surgery a bit. He is scheduled for surgery Monday morning, when he will be 9 days old.
Your prayers would be helpful, for when two or more are gathered in His name, He is also there.
Thanks.

Prayers for Jak and your entire family. This procedure may have become more commonplace, but it is still stressful for families. Given how far the technology has come since only the ‘80’s, Jak may not have much or any long term effect as medical science advances further.

Prayers up for Jack
O God, to whom all things grow, and by whom they are strengthened when grown, stretch forth Thy hand upon Thy servant who is sick at a tender age: that recovering the vigor of health, he may arrive at the fullness of years, and always give unto Thee a faithful and grateful service all the days of his life.
Prayers for little Jak and his family!!!

Prayers for little Jak and all of his loving, concerned family.
HI RG!
I’m sending prayers that the surgery was a complete success..
And, HRHS, not HLHS?
I didn’t know that HRHS also had 3 surgeries..
My nephew had 2 open heart surgeries at 2 days old..he’s now 4.5..VERY HEALTHY!! (we joke about the “poor sick baby”..but, it was VERY difficult at first because we were so worried..)
His surgeries were on Sept 12th and he went home by Sept 22nd..
He had 3 other heart defects which aren’t operable but also aren’t life threatening..
He just has heart check ups 1x per year..
My nephew wasn’t a HRHS baby or an HLHS baby, but,we thought he might be so did much research at the time..
My thoughts are with you!
I know MANY people with heart defect babies (including HRHS and HLHS) who are doing well!
One girl with HRHS played on my son’s BASEBALL team :-)
Prayers up for this baby and his family.
Dear FReeper Prayer Warriors, thank you all so very much for your prayers. Our family is truly grateful.
Jak’s surgery went according to plan. We were blessed with an excellent heart surgeon who has performed many of these procedures. The surgery is called the Blaylock-Taussig procedure (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blalock-Taussig_shunt). It was featured in the movie “Something the Lord Made” (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Something_the_Lord_Made), a wonderful movie which we owned on DVD before any of this started (another God shot).
The next 24 hours are very critical as Jak’s body learns to adapt to the foreign object that was placed in his body. But I know that thanks to the power of prayer, Jak will be ok.
His next surgery will be in 3 to 6 months, also open-heart. Same surgeon. I will continue to update, and will try to get some pictures of him online soon.
Thank you, thank you, thank you all so very much. I know that God loves it when His children (us) come together in His name.
Bless you all.
Prayers for healing lifted.
