Obama Limits When U.S. Would Use Nuclear Arms
New York Times ^ | April 5, 2010 | DAVID E. SANGER and PETER BAKER

Posted on 04/05/2010 5:37:13 PM PDT by lbryce

WASHINGTON — President Obama said Monday that he was revamping American nuclear strategy to substantially narrow the conditions under which the United States would use nuclear weapons, even in self defense.

But the president said in an interview that he was carving out an exception for “outliers like Iran and North Korea” that have violated or renounced the main treaty to halt nuclear proliferation.

Discussing his approach to nuclear security the day before formally releasing his new strategy, Mr. Obama described his policy as part of a broader effort to edge the world toward making nuclear weapons obsolete, and to create incentives for countries to give up any nuclear ambitions. To set an example, the new strategy renounces the development of any new nuclear weapons, overruling the initial position of his own defense secretary.

Mr. Obama’s strategy is a sharp shift from those adopted by his predecessors and seeks to revamp the nation’s nuclear posture for a new age in which rogue states and terrorist organizations are greater threats than traditional powers like Russia and China.

It eliminates much of the ambiguity that has deliberately existed in American nuclear policy since the opening days of the Cold War. For the first time, the United States is explicitly committing not to use nuclear weapons against non-nuclear states that are in compliance with the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, even if they attacked the United States with biological or chemical weapons, or launched a crippling cyberattack.

Those threats, he argued, could be deterred with “a series of graded options” -- a combination of old and newly designed conventional weapons.

“I’m going to preserve all the tools that are necessary in order to make sure that the American people are safe and secure,” Mr. Obama said during the interview in the Oval Office.

And none of this is funny, not one little bit.

I think it's darned funny, if someone thinks that this is going to make the GOP more than a laughing stock for the public....

I seem to remember seeing something from a lawyer one time, saying that he didn't ask a question of someone on the stand in court, unless he knew what the answer was going to be.

In this case, it would appear that you just want the GOP to get up there, pull its pants down and start asking questions that are going to go nowhere and not even get out of committee, considering the make-up of it, and have them paraded around the country in the news as an example of how the GOP thinks, and would run this country.

Sure, that's a winning combination all right.

Here's what you need and it isn't stupid exercises in committees that aren't going to go anywhere. You need to get the GOP to get more people to vote in the elections for our candidates.

Now, that is something that will work, doncha know.

I wouldn’t be surprised at all if Putin actually showed certain world leaders (one of) their missiles with the control panel set at 21 27 N 39 49 E - close enough! Deterrence means nothing unless you have the will to follow through and others know it well. Does anyone - anyone - think that Putin wouldn’t if “something really bad” happened there?

How's that been working with the Chechens ... :-) and how are the terrorist bombings going these days?

Oh..., wait a minute ... I just read, from another FReeper on this terrorist stuff over there in Russia, that it was the FSB Agents who were setting off these bombs...

So, what is Putin going to do now, blow up the FSB headquarters now? LOL ...

Whatever stupid does, will be undone by whomever follows after - although that will be a thankless task, sort of like being the guy with the broom and dustbin who gets to tag along after the elephants at the zoo parade.

All the tools? What about our main weapons - our nukes?

It’s just more evidence that this administration/government is a farce. No wonder average Americans are glued to shows like Survivor, American Idol, Dancing with the Stars, and (good grief) LOST at least the producers of those shows spend some time listening to them unlike our congressmen.

People who laugh very inappropriately, as at tragedy, are mentally ill.

Are you back to reading my posts, again, after you've sworn off reading them about 10 times over again ... LOL ...

Oh, and by the way, the laughing you see, comes from reading some stupid comments here on FRee Republic, from some posters. They're hilarious... :-)

Never until we take back at least the House. Would Biden be more sensible?

Biden is a joke. Hillary is a bitch. But those poeple are cold warriors compared to Obama. This guy jumps the shark every day.

Speaking of which, is this even being reported on any leftwing blogs (I know, I shouldn’t care) and what are they saying? Are they trying to whitewash this or sugarcoat or do they AGREE? I’ll be honest, I don’t have the fortitude to go there myself but would love to hear they are twisting themselves into pretzels.

You were saying ...

JUST WHAT WILL OBAMA HAVE TO DO TO US FOR PEOPLE TO UNITE , GIVE UP A FEW NIGHTS OF AMERICAN IDOL AND MARCH ON WASHINGTON FORCEFULLY?
I’m serious , who has an answer for me ?
Until that happens he will do ANYTHING he damn pleases and you , slaves, will have to accept it and you slaves will DESERVE it for you inaction. Shame on all of us.

It won't happen (i.e., a "hot revolution") until you see the numbers against Obama, big enough to vote him out of office. BUT, by the time you see those numbers of voters big enough to vote him out of office, you won't need a "hot revolution", because he'll be voted out, you see...

The bottom line here is until you have a large enough crowd that will exceed the numbers required to vote him out of office, you're not going to have any kind of "hot revolution" at all.

And if you think a bunch of people marching on the streets is going to get any President out of office -- that alone, just by itself, then you're crazy. It ain't gonna happen.

It's only when the numbers are big enough ("marching on the streets") to translate into votes big enough to actually vote people out of office. AND..., it takes "bigger numbers" than that to have a "hot revolution" that will work and succeed in "militarily" taking over the government.

If you think you can militarily force any President out of office, when that same group can't "vote him out of office" ( ... LOL ...) -- you better think again.

AND... as I said, you don't need a "hot revolution" to militarily remove someone, when you've got big enough numbers to simply vote someone out of office.

You're gonna have no "revolution" as long as you don't have enough numbers of voters to simply "vote an office holder -- out of office".

That's the way it works.

SO... just get enough votes to vote him out of office -- that's all it takes.

I hope it never happens. I pray that dear leader never gets his Reichstag and the perpetrators of this treason against America are humiliated, punished for their crimes and fade off into obscurity, relegated to the dustbin of history. I don’t know what will happen but it would be great if it doesn’t have to get ugly.

It's a "real simple solution" -- so simple that everyone avoids this solution...

Just "vote him out of office" -- then it's done.

But, the reason why everyone seems to avoid "that solution" -- is that (it appears) no one thinks it can be done.

And if that's the case (i.e., he can't be voted out of office, this next time around) -- then you don't even have a hope to getting any kind of "hot revolution" going...

The bottom line -- is -- "vote him out of office"... end of story.

“How’s that been working with the Chechens ... :-) and how are the terrorist bombings going these days? “

I don’t know, I have no idea what retaliatory actions that they may or may not take, may or may not have already done and/or may not ever be known, or what the thresholds for those actions are. That’s how the implied “uncertainty” part of “certain response” works, which, after working fairly well for 60 years or so, the Strategic Genius of our Time has now upset.

THREE YEARS of this? I doubt there will be elections in 3 years my friend. I think riots in the streets will get the attention of the rest of the morons in this country who have no idea whats going on except what they learn on The View. The left has employed these tactics VERY successfully over the years and we need to use these tactics against them .
