Feds: Homes With Chinese Drywall Must Be Gutted
Associated Press via ABC News ^ | April 2, 2010 | Associated Press

New federal guidelines say thousands of U.S. homes tainted by Chinese drywall won't be safe unless they are completely gutted.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission released the guidelines Friday. They say electrical wiring, outlets, circuit breakers, fire alarm systems, carbon monoxide alarms, fire sprinklers, gas pipes and drywall must be removed.

About 3,000 homeowners, mostly in Florida, Virginia, Mississippi, Alabama and Louisiana, have reported problems with the Chinese-made drywall.

A large quantity of the drywall was imported during the housing boom and after a string of Gulf Coast hurricanes. It has been linked to corrosion of wiring, air conditioning units, computers, doorknobs and jewelry, along with possible health problems.

Trendy stupidity. Also, High tech firms go there for cheap labor, knowing that their tech will be stolen. That is the tech that they were not forced to turn over for the priviledge of building in china.

So, the drywall somehow sneaks down into your wife’s jewelry box and messes with her pearls?

I scrolled down and saw a few responses to yr remark, and it only confirmed my feeling that NO ONE got your joke.

Color me confused -- would either of you be willing to private freepmail me with a clue?

Cheers!

The markings are on the backside of the drywall.
My lumberyard has been flooded with questions about this. We only sell drywall made right here in the USA.
Once again, the Chinese screwed the American people. Too bad unions pretty much made it impossible to compete.

I think it’s the sulfur content of the drywall.

"What I want to know is how you can ship drywall from china cheaper than it can be made in the US."

Unions?

Don't forget neo-slave labor, absolutely no environmental regulations, and lack of onerous taxes and regulations.

I am not saying the Government is responsible, but WHO is?

The globalists in the Republican and Democratic parties who passed so called free trade agreements that placed American (not global) businesses and workers (burdened with onerous taxation and regulations) in an untenable competition with global corporations and workers.

So instead of pressuring the Chinese, they’ll punish the citizens. Not surprised anymore. Worthless fascist thugs.

You’re right! And do recall, during the 2008 elections, there was only one candidate who saw it. Duncan Hunter. He was the only one of the bunch who didn’t vote for MFR for China, including Ron Paul.

Punish? I didn't read it as an order but as a guideline or recommendation.

Can't imagine either the feds or the state will have any problem with our living with our stinky drywall, corroded wiring, plumbing, etc. as long as we care to. It's when we want to sell it that they'll get involved, in the name of consumer protection, of course. Can't do anything without the nanny state anymore.

No - but your homeowners’ insurance company might be. Let’s say they learn that your home has an inherent condition, built into its very walls, that will cause the electrical and plumbing systems to decay, as well as render the inhabitants ill. How long will they continue to insure you?

How long will your mortgage writer let you continue in that home without insurance?

Those won’t be government regulations that really hurt you. It will be the rules of the private enterprise institutions.

Of course insurance and mortgage would be a problem. And, anyone who doesn’t like the terms of those companies is free to shop around for something better or skip them altogether.

But, the subject was governments.

The problem is that the Feds may end up being legal. Are there Federal standards and regulations on the makeup of the drywall? Were they relaxed at all in the 2000s, so that China had an easier time importing these materials? Were tariffs relaxed? Was product testing on these materials, either on the products themselves, or at the time of import, changed during that period?

If people can find a way to blame the Federal government, they will. But they will be mad at Republicans, not the Democrats.
