It's been said that the military is always preparing for war. That is true. We prepare for combat every day. We ran 5 miles today to the rifle range and shot nearly 200 rounds a piece at targets and then ran back. However, we also pray for peace. I would love one day to be completely unnecessary. But alas, I am a realist, and I know that day will never come.
The headlines of the last week have reminded me more of glimpsing at the S2 Daily Briefing Sheets while in theater or the Al-Jazeera than the NY Times or the Washington Post. Think about that for a moment, let it sink in.
Before I get into the main premise of this article - I need to make two statements here.
First and foremost , when it comes to the back and forth of who did what to whom and why - I don't give a @!$%#. It doesn't change the action. In life we're judged by our actions, nothing more, nothing less. One of the greatest things of the military is when it comes to an enemy, the politics behind the situation - don't matter in accomplishing that mission. For the military , life is simple in that regard.
Secondly, Regardless of your political ideology, you've earned the right as US Citizens to say your piece - no matter how wrong it may be. That is your right, and I will give my life to protect it.

If his true intention was to fight to defend the Constitution, he'd already be shooting--and it wouldn't be in the direction of red state conservatives.
Whether knowingly or ignorantly, he's on the side of the fiends who are hell bent on destroying the Constitution.

They wont be facing and killing regular people they meet on the street. They will be engaged in firefights with pissed off civilians. These "pissed off" civilians are the people who love and support our military. What makes you think they have any interest in firing upon our troops? It's the traitorous politicians they're after.
Your Kent State example is ludicrous! Those freaking hippies were anti-establishment, anti-law-and-order, *anti-military*.
Are you telling me our troops are too stupid to recognize the threat difference between angry leftist hippies and the Tea Party patriots who have been their *sole* source of support through these past difficult years?
My God, man! Even the congressional Democrats last week knew that the Tea Party people were so non-threatening that they waded into the protesters knowing they were all completely safe.

Try and envision a Stryker rolling through neighbor's front lawn or a F/A-18 making lazy loops over your head in Close Air Support for the troops in the distance.Try to envision this, Sgt. An A-10 Warthog levels and burns the neighborhood your parents live in and kills another 100 law-abiding Americans in order to kill one or two suspected "rebels." You will never stand next to a civilian again without the fear that he or she may jam an icepick into your ear or eye socket.
If you want to play hypothetical games in order to induce fear you ought to consider the consequences of your hypothetical actions. Think of the results of using superior military firepower on working class neighborhoods in America.
Can I refill your beer and get you something to eat while you consider that, Sgt.?
It's good stuff. I guarantee its quality. ;^)

Truth be told in a scenario of a real red/blue civil war, our current Armed forces would be irrelevant. If you scale up the last Civil War to today, each Army would have 6-8 MILLION men in each, which would dwarf current force structure.

...guess she or he didn't want to be caught disseminating seditious anti-public-affairs materials. The National Guard (Army) is for putting down sedition, and each of the states' National Guard units belongs to the governor of each state. The governor of each state has the last word, and the federal government only uses NG soldiers with their permission. Riots by criminals, yes. But no, in a physical civil disagreement (if that were to happen), they won't stay cohesive to go around killing everyone. Each of them has his individual political opinions and loyalties, too. Leaders would cool any such excitement off, before it could happen.
There might be a few troublemaking jackasses here and there, but there's not going to be any civil war, as things are. There's no need. There's a potential for too much suffering in that, and most of us know it. After our usual political processes, there's the 1st Amendment and the marketplace.
It's already being fought, so to speak, in the
marketplace, and many others have joined Bill Gross in doing so. See what's happening to bonds, which is were the chain reaction begins.

Without revenues, wanna-be despots have nothing. They are properly and quickly replaced. And no, after the default (if it comes to that), we won't have despots from the other political party, either. We're all pretty well fed-up with the anti-American globalism. They'll love their American neighbors here or be stripped of all of their wealth for their special interests by market maneuvers.

As one who was an army officer from '71 to '73, I know those troops would have followed those orders. My husband was medically retired from the Army in 1970 for wounds he received in Vietnam. We had many friends still in the military in the 1970s and had you issued such orders- or if it had even seemed you might situation wise- many of those we knew had plans in place to bug-out with their families and join the other side. Many men in the Army at that time actually had passwords with their wives so they could meet up at a predetermined location if things went South. I do believe most would follow orders in the situations discussed in this thread- but I know for a fact that not all would.

I was never afraid of dying fighting for my beliefs - I was always afraid I'd perish while calling out to the nurse in some old folks' home to come help me get off the toilet. So, if this "marine" is trying to scare me he should try a different angle.
With all that said, though, I don't think it's going to play out the way this article paints it. What *is* going to play out is that national food supplies will be disrupted and the Democrats' own constituents will be rioting in the streets. Conservatives will be busy defending their homes and mopping up afterwards.
Everybody I know is busy trying to be ready to hunker down - the ultimate expression of no confidence in our Democrat leadership.
To: Halgr
Because I did I googlesearch on it after I read your reply, and could not find any reference to it before today.
I was just wondering when this had made the rounds before - when was the last time we faced a situation so stressfully dire? - and what prior tracings of authenticity there had been.
What did you ban the poster on your site for?
