I know it was on here recently, but I cannot remember the title to search for it--where in the bill does it say that we can be imprisoned for not purchasing health insurance?
A link to the original post would work just fine, also.
Thanks!
You can be fined for not being insured.
The fine is collected by the IRS.
The IRS was not given the authority to imprison people for non-compliance with Obamacare. They can sieze $750 from your income tax returns if you have anything coming back. That’s it.
“You can be fined for not being insured. The fine is collected by the IRS. “
All those ACORN babies gotta work somewhere...
This is an article about the timeline. Go to 2014 in the article and it discusses the fines for not having insurance. The jail time is not mentioned.
I know I read somewhere that if you failed to pay the fine you could be jailed, not sure where...
I thought there was a penalty for not getting insurance, and refusing to pay the penalty could mean imprisonment
I filed my last tax return. They are welcomed to come and talk to me about it. They’ll need to watch the trip wires though.
I thought it rises over time to up to something like 2.5% of your income (or $750) whichever is greater.
But what happens if you refuse to pay the penalty?
Do you remember anything like this?
In an earlier version of the bill they were talking 25,000 fine and up to 5 years jail. I dont think that made it into the bill.....yet.

An option?
Thanks for all the help you guys provided. I thought I had seen something fairly recent here on FR about a Dr’s letter itemizing the things in the bill.
Prosecution is authorized under the Code for a variety of offenses. Depending on the level of the noncompliance, the following penalties could apply to an individual:If you follow the 7201 and 7203 links, it refers to this as a "tax", so I guess it would be treated just like any other tax that the IRS assesses, and if that is the case, then yes, you can go to jail. Section 7203 misdemeanor willful failure to pay is punishable by a fine of up to $25,000 and/or imprisonment of up to one year.
Section 7201 felony willful evasion is punishable by a fine of up to $250,000 and/or imprisonment of up to five years. [page 3]
From my previous post at 13:
Ensign receives handwritten confirmation
This doesn’t happen often enough.
Sen. John Ensign (R-Nev.) received a handwritten note Thursday from Joint Committee on Taxation Chief of Staff Tom Barthold confirming the penalty for failing to pay the up to $1,900 fee for not buying health insurance.
Violators could be charged with a misdemeanor and could face up to a year in jail or a $25,000 penalty, Barthold wrote on JCT letterhead. He signed it “Sincerely, Thomas A. Barthold.”
The note was a follow-up to Ensign’s questioning at the markup.
I know—I looked at all those links. I was hoping to find something more current, though.
