Cokie Roberts: Glenn Beck 'Corrupting' Democracy, a 'Traitor' to American Values
newsbusters.org ^ | March 23, 2010 | Lachlan Markay

Journalists love the marketplace of ideas until people start selling ideas they find objectionable. The liberal media somehow manages to shout about its right to speak freely while demanding others be silenced.

Glenn Beck is probably the most popular target for the left's demands for censorship. Cokie Roberts and her husband Steve picked up that ball and ran with it today in their joint syndicated column. They dubbed Beck "a traitor to the American values he professes so loudly to defend" and claimed he is "corrupting the very essence of democracy." And all this just by speaking.

Unsurprisingly, the immense damage Beck is doing to the American political process can only be demonstrated anecdotally:

Steve recently took part in a lunchtime panel sponsored by a local radio station. A beefy young man in the audience grabbed the microphone and challenged the speakers, in a sneering and confrontational tone, to name one good thing about President Obama's health-care proposal.

Steve's answer: People without insurance flood hospital emergency rooms and push up medical bills for everyone. So it would be in the "national interest" to expand insurance and hold down costs.

"The national interest?" retorted the questioner in an even louder voice. "That sounds like fascism!"

We have been in this business a long time. We welcome tough questions and certainly don't believe we have all the answers. But "fascism"? That's over the line -- way over the line -- for any sensible or civilized conversation.

We don't know what the beefy guy reads or to whom he listens, but we would bet he's a disciple of Glenn Beck. The popular author and broadcaster who has turned nonstop name-calling into an art form is a big fan of the "F-word."

Even better - volunteers should hang out around Emergency rooms with ICE hats and shirts and a cell phone.

Cokie's father, Hale Boggs, spent a lot of money on genealogy. He found that a great number of his distant ancestors were sent to American on prison barges and tossed ashore naked as the day they were born to work as slaves.

Cokie, unaccountably, is in favor of returning to those days and stripping us bare down to our sandles.

Trouble with so many Leftwingtards is they can learn nothing from anything yet they believe they know more than everyone about everything.

"...sneering and confrontational tone..." Apparently we are not allowed to be confrontational or to take any kind of tone.

"...beefy young man..."...and again, "...what beefy guys read or to whom they listen..." = code words for white males.

It is hereafter officially ok to refer to Mr. Roberts as "doughy" and Ms. Roberts as "grating" or "matronly". Such appellations do not have any sort of "confrontational tone".

Regardless of the fascism beef, the evidence in MA has been that the insured and uninsured, the newly insured and the previously uninsured actually use emergency rooms are surprisingly consistent rates—regardless of insurance status.

Rather, the chances are that with more doctors bailing and more people, legal and illegal, covered, there’ll be longer waits to see doctors and so yet more people going to emergency rooms.

In my recollection, Glenn talks a lot more about "progressivism" than about "fascism".

Horrors! And how do we know this, CokieSteve? How often does Glen Beck say the "F-word" on the air? I'll bet it's not as often as our village idiot of a Vice President.

And to think, this is the Cokie and Steve Roberts who are so anti-American that they have applauded every treasonous act of leftwing judicial activism that has illegally shredded the Constitution.

Cokie, if you read this, I am calling you a lawless traitor and most of all I am calling you a LIAR.

If she thinks Glenn Beck is corrupting democracy, she hasn’t been watching Congress the last few months?

Where do these Democratic hacks in the media get off?

Actually, Beck’s been pretty stuck on “progressivsim,” lately.

Of course, progressivism is fascism, is socialism, is a kind of Marxism and in the words of the alleged Vice President is...

“...a big f**king deal.”

A good number of people visiting the emergency room do have insurance.

When an accident, heart attack, etc. happens and you dial 911 they bring you to the emergency room.

What happens if acute illness strikes in the night? What about a fall in your home? You get taken to the emergency room.

The lies cannot be allowed to continue.

I would completely agree. The thing is I keep trying to figure out how the left, which essentially worships at the altar of Communist/socialism, is so intent on implementing fascism, which they never tire of denigrating. One thing I have observed about the late unpleasantness (which is going to be nothing on the unpleasantness to come) was that the Obamatrons lined up to bash the insurance companies but then implemented a system which could not be more precisely designed to maximize insurance company profits while minimizing risk and maximizing control. I guess having demogogues go out there and harangue is intended to entertain the groundlings and confuse the opposition. Given they win, why would the insurance execs complain? So under cover of being considered beasts, they become masters without even having their names publicized. Pretty neat trick.

I figure that’s the way the Commies have managed to implement fascism: convince us all they abhor it so deeply, while they work tirelessly to implement it, all the while being happy when opponents mislabel it socialism and try to beat that horse to death. Classic misdirection. And I bet nobody even believes it’s going on.

Somebody object to this post or something, please...so I have an idea anybody reads my stuff.

Journalists love the marketplace of ideas until people start selling ideas they find objectionable

Many so-called 'journalists', who're actually leftist activists looking for easy work, having gotten their job through corrupt connections, profess to love the marketplace of ideas until people from the right start selling their ideas.

Fixed.

Sorry, being "civilized" got us to the point that we're facing FASCISM now.

Time to get "extreme" in the defense of liberty.
