It's a Civil War: What We Do Now
Townhall.com ^ | March 23, 2010 | Dennis Prager

Posted on 03/23/2010 4:56:20 AM PDT by Kaslin

A terrible thing happened to America on Sunday, March 21, 2010.

The country took its biggest step ever down a road diametrically opposed to its original intent of keeping the state small so that the individual can be free and great.

Therefore, in this unprecedented crisis of values, this is what needs to be done:

1. Know and teach America's core values.

We got to this point solely because over the past few generations, Americans have forgotten the values that have made America distinctive and great. Even the "Greatest Generation" failed to communicate them.

In a nutshell, they are what I call the American Trinity: "In God we trust," "Liberty" and "E Pluribus Unum." The left has successfully made war on all three -- substituting secularism for God and religion in as much of American life as possible; substituting equality (of result) for liberty; and multiculturalism is the opposite of "E Pluribus Unum."

People who do not understand American ideals -- especially small government -- now dominate our schools, our entertainment media and our news media.

(My own contribution here is a video titled, "The American Trinity" at prageru.com. Please view it and forward it.)

2. Recognize that we are fighting the left, not liberals.

Conservatives and centrists are no longer fighting liberals. We are fighting the left.

Liberalism believed in American exceptionalism; the left not only does not believe in it, the left opposes it. President Obama, when asked if he believes in American exceptionalism, replied, "I believe in American exceptionalism, just as I suspect that the Brits believe in British exceptionalism, and the Greeks believe in Greek exceptionalism."

Liberalism believed in creating wealth; the left is interested in redistributing it.

Liberalism believed in a strong defense. The left believes in cutting defense and a strong United Nations.

3. Democrats should be referred to as Social Democrats. This is not meant to be cute, let alone as a slur. But calling Democrats Social Democrats is an effective way of reminding Americans that there is no longer any difference between what is now known as the Democratic Party and the Social Democratic parties of Europe. When the Democratic Party returns to its roots as a liberal, not a left-wing, party, we will happily resume calling the party by its original name. However, since no Democrat can cite a significant difference between the Democratic Party and the SD parties, there is no good reason not to use the more accurate nomenclature.

4. Work tirelessly to repeal the bill.

We must single-mindedly work to repeal the government health plan. We all know that it is difficult to repeal entitlements because they are like drugs and it is very difficult to wean people off drugs. But it is not impossible. We need to warn our fellow Americans that entitlements will do to America what drugs eventually do to addicts.

All Republicans must run for office on the "repeal" issue. Even when they lose, the difference between right and left, between Republicans and Social Democrats will have been made clear; and clarity is our best friend.

5. Our motto: "The bigger the government, the smaller the citizen."

I used this phrase in addressing the Republican members of Congress. It has become widely used, including by Rep. David Dreier, R-Calif., on the House floor during the Congressional debate on Sunday. It encapsulates this epic battle of American values versus leftist values. Every movement needs a motto. I nominate this.

6. Do not let other matters distract.

Neither Republicans nor conservatives are united on every issue facing America. Immigration is one example. But we are united on the big government vs. free individual issue, which, more than anything else, has defined America. If we allow any other domestic issue to divide us, we will lose.

And here's why: If Americans forget what America stands for, it won't help us if there is not one illegal immigrant here. And if we do remember what it means to be American, we can handle anything.

7. Acknowledge that we are in a non-violent civil war.

I write the words "civil war" with an ache in my heart. But we are in one.

Thank God this civil war is non-violent. But the fact is that the left and the rest of the country share almost no values. The American value system and the leftist value system are irreconcilable. If the left wins, America's values lose. If American values prevail, the left loses.

After Sunday's vote, for the first time in American history, one could no longer confidently believe that the American system will prevail. And if we don't fight for it, we don't deserve it.

My ancestors were raised right and polite and didn’t abuse women or leave bastard kids everywhere they pissed and said yes ma’am and yes sir.

and still do

but when they have had to fight, they fight like hell, in fact they have always carried a disproportionate share of comabt duty both as US and southern troopers

being raised right shouldn’t preclude that

I was just watching OButthead going on abou the nasty rhetoric on the right...what an ass...maybe he’d olike us to talk graphic sex with them like he would

That's my point, exactly. It's time to not be nice.

Too bad you didn’t get to listen to Dennis today. Then you would have had the chance to hear him say:

“Twenty million illegal aliens isn’t our problem. Failing to Americanize them is our problem.”

after which he went on to say:

“I’m for MASSIVE increases in LEGAL immigration”.

You have to remember that Dennis is an old style anti-leftist Liberal who grew up in New York City. You can take the kid out of New York, but you can’t take New York out of the kid. His idea of ‘America’, and it’s certainly an ‘idea’ because he subscribes to the ‘America is a Proposition Nation horsesh*t’, is New York City. A teeming mass of humanity from all over the globe. That’s what he envisions for the whole country.

Now if you want that, I say go move to New York City. Or, sadly, SoCal which has changed from American suburban paradise to Blade Runner land in my time here. Massive immigration, legal or illegal, would finish off what remains of the American culture we grew up with. Barry Goldwater famously said that we ought to cut New York City off from the American mainland and haul it out to sea.

Dennis would do just the opposite, through the agency of mass immigration. Dennis is a fool. A pleasant fool, but a fool all the same. And when his immigration ideas become policy, as they did under his pal Dubya, it ends up in disaster for the average American who simply wants to live in the culture that was passed down to him.

Ghandi was dealing with a moral British Emphire that, in time, would have granted Indians their Freedom. Look how badly Ghandi’s daughter ruled and she was a direct product of Ghandi’s non violent philosophy......

Ronald Reagan was leading a moral US and was the titular leader of the Free World..... against an evil Soviet Union lead by a moral Gorbachov...who realized that Communisum could not prevail in a test of will’s (and Economies) with the rest of the world, and contrary to the welfare of it’s own citizens.

Obama is an evil man with a communist upbringing/education/ and career. The very nature of his administration will begin the violence when they realize the scale of the opposition against their “Transforming” agenda. It will, of course, be reported as a “racist” event by “right wing rareactionaries.” You only need to read the comments on KOS or DU to know that the left has no compunction to refrain from violence to further it’s agenda.

“The supposed “Greatest Generation” raised the “ME” generation.. I have never seen what was so GREAT about it.

Your primary duty on this earth is to raise your children properly, in this respect the “greatest generation” was the greatest failure in history.”

You must be quite young. I’ll ascribe your lack of charity to ignorance. Being nearly 60 I grew up surrounded by adults of the WWII generation. You don’t respect them because you know nothing of them. They knew real hardship during the Depression, and then spent their 20s fighting in a global war. The things that you take for granted were unimaginable luxuries in their lives. I know some that grew up without phones, without electricity, without plumbing. With all that they were certainly more civil than their children’s generation. And they could no more control the ‘Boomers and the 60s generation than they could control the tide.

I have a kind of off the wall suggestion here. I think it is time for conservatives to give up on Iraq and Afghanistan, bring the troops home from overseas everywhere, demobilize the armed services, and support drastic cuts in military spending. We also need to drastically reduce the size of the military.

As an organized, well-armed, and intact outfit, the armed forces are now a formidable barrier against a change in our government. Obama always knows he can fall back on that force if there is an election to rig or if, say, a state tried to secede.

OTOH, demobilized, they become a formidable force in favor of change. Most soldiers are conservative and know how to fight in an organized fashion. The mere possibility of them scattered throughout the civilian population is a big stabilizing force in modifying the behavior of our ruling class.

We have to figure out which limbs to cut off at this point. There is a lot more bad stuff coming in the next year. Janet Napolitano has ordered a halt to building the border fence. Amnesty and Energy taxes and rationing are likely coming (only 51 votes needed in the Senate these days).

My suggestion is that it is far more important to get our country back than to succeed in Iraq or Afghanistan. We have failed domestically and need to get that house in order first.

We also need to support repeal of anti-terrorist laws and powers of the government. Al Qaeda is now a much smaller threat to us than our government.

Remember, Posse Comitas is only 51 votes in the Senate reconciliation away from repeal. It will be easy for Obama to gin up an emergency to justify its repeal.

They can’t do anything without wealth to redistribute, so the key is to deny them this as much as possible.

Hubby and I are discussing one of us quitting our jobs.

But even with an individual right to keep and bear arms, the government is the sole legitimate keeper of the right to use force except in limited circumstances such as the right to protect yourself, family and property or to prevent the comission of a crime. Other than that, the state reserves the right to violence to itself whether to punish or to enforce. It is the charter of the US federal government, the Constitution, which limits the scope of that power by the federal government. Without that compact, society runs amok. Anarchy.

But the basis of the compact is trust, and the Dems have broken that trust in a big way. Most people cannot even articulate what has been lost, but they understand, instinctively that something intrinsic has changed. The conservatives in this country have a chance to again show the people of this country that they can control their destiny, but they must be the stewards of government that they failed to be the last time around.

That is a load of crap. These people DO have the consent of the governed, we had an election. They won. I was out working to elect McCain/Palin, were you? Or were you one of the people who sat home because McCain wasn’t a “real” conservative.

Sorry that probably wasn’t fair, but I spent a lot of time trying to make sure that Barry never got his chance to even try this stuff, and a lot of people on this board and in the Republican ranks couldn’t stomach McCain and so now we have to deal with this crap.

As far as the rest of it goes, I don’t know about you, but a war that killed more US Citizens than all the other wars we have been in combined does not, and will not ever be “cliche” for me.

America has a short memory. In 2003 when we invaded Iraq, we had near universal approval. It was only three short years later that we lost Congress because of our “war weariness”. Most Americans don’t want to know about something that lasts longer than a NASCAR race or and NFL game. Their are patriots here and in other places, but the vast majority of people are sheep.

Keep up the good fight. There are good people out there, we just have to make sure that we vett them well. We don’t need anymore snakes in the woodshed.

R’s need to run united on one thing; kill this monstrosity in any way that they can. Repeal it, defund it whatever. That’s all they have to say, over and over.

State elections are just as important. We need people who understand the ninth and tenth amendments.
