Can't believe the National Review buried this nugget in the article. Disturbing, to say the least.

Stupak notes that his negotiations with House Democratic leaders in recent days [about the health care plan] have been revealing. I really believe that the Democratic leadership is simply unwilling to change its stance, he says. Their position says that women, especially those without means available, should have their abortions covered. The arguments they have made to him in recent deliberations, he adds, are a pretty sad commentary on the state of the Democratic party.
What are Democratic leaders saying? If you pass the Stupak amendment, more children will be born, and therefore it will cost us millions more. Thats one of the arguments Ive been hearing, Stupak (a pro-Life Democrat opposing the bill) says. Money is their hang-up. Is this how we now value life in America? If money is the issue come on, we can find room in the budget. This is life were talking about.

this is exactly why Democrats should be in charge of “end of life” decisions for the elderly, too!
/sarcasm
There is not a chance in hell Stupak will switch parties.
He’s mostly a typical leftist rat.
Personally, I don’t know what Stupak is doing. When I saw him at a town hall meeting, a man asked if the dems kept the abortion language in the bill, would he vote against it. He would not give a straight answer. My problem with Stupak is, he may not vote for it with the abortion language in it, but, he will for sure vote for it, if it’s taken out.
I hope that Stupak and the pro-life Democrats stand fast and bring down the health care bill. Just like the Notre Dame pro-lifers offered the first real protest against the newly elected messiah when he spoke at the college last May.
Pro-lifers can show the secular Tea Party libertarians that social conservatives should be in the tent too. We are all in this together.
Sooooo, there aren't any death panels ey??? First they take the life of the innocent. Then they come after anyone that's not fit to live, according to there standards.
That should be on the Free Republic Masthead.
Outstanding!
“The reality is that government theft is the norm and at least birth control pills are cheaper and dont involve killing a human being.”
This is not correct. One of the ways birth control pills work, when ovulation is not suppressed and fertilization of the egg is not prevented, is by preventing the implantation of an already fertilized egg. This happens AFTER conception. Life begins at conception. Thus often times the birth control pill DOES involve killing a human being. The same is true for IUDs, Norplant, Depo-Prevara, etc.
“There’s also the Pill, the Patch and shots.
Why is it that murdering our unborn children is the only method of “birth control” that liberals deem acceptable? “
The Pill, the Patch and shots can act as abortifacients. These forms of chemical abortions kill our unborn children just as lethally as a surgical abortion. The question I would ask is, “Why is it that pro-lifers who oppose surgical abortion, who claim life begins at conception, don’t understand that millions and millions die each year from chemical abortion?” Is it because these tiniest of human beings are too small to be noticed?
Excellent point. I’ve had this debate multiple times with otherwise pro-lifers.
Let’s send Stupak a thank you note.

Stupak makes me VERRRRY uncomfortable. I love that he is standing up to his party on the matter of priciples. But, I am afraid that as soon as the leadership compromises on abortion, he will cave. There are so many things I find objectionable about the legislation. Just fixing abortion won’t make it ok!
Hey Stupak, if you had any brains at all you would know that abortion is only the tip of the iceberg of disturbind aspects of the Democratic Party. However, you agree with most of them. While I may agree with you on this issue there are so many issues that I disagree with you on that I still hope you lose your bid when re-election time comes up for you. You are no hero to me.
Point taken...
Most countries want a larger population as a source of greater revenue.
“More people will cost too much” bodes ill for a nation’s leadership.
