FDA urged to let homosexuals donate blood
WorldNetDaily ^ | March 10, 2010 | Chelsea Schilling

Sen. John Kerry is slamming the Food and Drug Administration with letters, demanding that it justify and reconsider its "outdated" ban on blood donation by men who have sex with men.

According to the FDA policy, homosexual men are banned from donating blood if they have had sexual intercourse with a male since 1977.

Kerry, D-Mass., and 17 other Democratic lawmakers asked FDA Commissioner Margaret Hamburg to reverse the policy in a March 4 letter.

"Not a single piece of scientific evidence supports the ban." Kerry wrote. "A law that was once considered medically justified is today simply outdated and needs to end. ..."

People with rare blood types have banked their own blood for upcoming elective surgeries. It lasts a few weeks.

What has happened to cause this to be “outdated”?

I can’t give blood because I lived in Europe during the Mad Cow scare. Is that suddenly outdated too?

Many people donate their own blood for later surgery. You may, however, have to pay to keep the blood cold while in storage and you also have to trust the medical staff not to mix up your blood with somebody else’s.

“More than 37 percent of blacks aged 25-34 - the highest of any age group - tested positive
Yikes! Those figures are very scary.”

You should see the statistics from Miami and Baltimore. They’re even worse than that.

” A new study assessing human immunodeficiency virus rates in Baltimore-area homosexual men has revealed that a third have the disease, while in African-American homosexual men, the rate is 50 percent.”

I went back and read the WND article again, and according to what they wrote the letter Kerry sent was dated March 4th. So assuming he signed the letter himself, Lautenberg is still with us as of a week ago.

I suppose the letter could have been prepared and signed earlier but most decent people would take off a signature of a person that passed away before the published date on the letter.

Then again, we are talking about John Kerry

Blood donation is NOT a civil rights issue. It is a public health issue.

Why is he focusing on gays?

I am not allowed to give blood forever in the USA. Why? Because I lived in Europe in the late 1980s - early 1990s. And what is the exact reason they ban my O negative forever? Because there was a mad cow scare in England during some of those years.

I was not in the UK, and the country I lived in never imported beef from the UK, and I was practically a vegetarian in those times. But none of that matters; my blood is banned from helping people here FOREVER.

Really stupid rules.

These people simply can’t think through the obvious results of their politically correct, dangerous campaign. They sure as hell didn’t ask the hemophiliac community, perhaps the biggest users of donated blood. My hemophiliac friend succumbed last week from the lifelong aftermath of receiving HIV positive blood donated by a homosexual.

You too, huh? I really think that sucks. Fine, forbid those who were actually in England during the Mad Cow, but we weren’t even there and we can’t give.

I wonder if a person can save their own blood. I remember my husband donating his blood for his sister when she had surgery.

I banked my blood before surgery.

Supposedly you can. However, when my wife did it, the saved blood was no good, it clotted in the IV tube when it was being reinjected. It must have been stored improperly.

Why don’t the gay populations start their own blood banks for each other? Thant way, they could keep passing on HIV and HepC to each other without even having to have multiple sex partners.

I just hope I never need blood.

I had occasion to do some work at a blood bank near downtown Raleigh several yrs. ago.

I wouldn't have shaken the hands of about half on the donors in the waiting room, let alone get a transfusion from them.

Makes perfect sense to me! Remember Obozo is all about sowing internal dissent, promoting insecurity and hopelessness.

Ergo Obozo wants to tear down traditional places of refuge. The American healthcare model is a bastion of comfort to those who can afford it! So, Obozo will do all in his POWER to destroy it!

Let them donate, then throw it out.
When I give blood they have a “confidential” (or had? it’s been a while) that the patient puts on the form. one (barcoded) says “my blood should be fine” the other says “biohazard waste, don’t give this to any humans” and allows those with diseases (real or potential) to give blood and save face to their families.

I don’t want any of that blood in the fridge if I need some.

The horrible results of the liberal elitists’agenda are just for us normal, average Americans, not for them. They are so good and noble they are exempt from having their own ghastly ideas inflicted on them.

You can self donate but its short term and since you can only donate a pint every 60 days its usually only for well-planned elective surgery. Caveat: I’m not a medical doctor and haven’t been to a Holiday Express Inn lately. ;-)
