ACK!!! What virus is this?!? Ebay wants an ATM PIN?!?
Ebay Motors ^ | Saturday, March 6, 2010

Posted on 03/06/2010 1:02:42 PM PST by Special Agent Anthony DiNozzo

I am trying to log into my ebay account, and I am being asked for all sorts of personal information, to include an ATM PIN.

I am going to the correct URL [the browser shows it as living at "ebay.com"], so this isn't "phishing".

Ergo one of the following must be true:

1) Either Ebay has been hacked, or

2) I have a very sophisticated virus on my machine which is capable of altering my TCP/IP stack and redirecting my DNS lookups.

It ain’t on my eBay account, mine seems fine. You have a virus and have landed on another page it would seem to me. I sure as heck would not fill out that page.

The first thing I noticed is:

their form states: “please enter as more information as possible”

This, alone, should prompt suspicion and inaction.

I would suggest AVG or Avast - both of which have free home-use versions that provide good protection.

I use and recommend AVG Anti-virus. It's free and very good (better in my experience than prominent commercial programs like Norton), but not perfect. As a second-level of protection I run Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware two or three times a week when I go to bed.

Make sure you always update Anti-Malware before you use it to scan your computer; they generate a new update at least once a day. It will find and fix just about anything out there, even infections which have massively infiltrated your computer and would otherwise be almost impossible to remove without completely reformatting your hard drive.

If for some reason your computer won't let you get to the www.malwarebytes.org site, see the earlier comment about your hosts file. Some infections edit that file to make anti-virus web sites invisible.

You didn’t get there by clicking some kind of link in an email or anything did you?

Another slacker not running or paying for an ‘internet suite anti-virus’ program.

Save us all buddy and buy Kaspersky Internet Security
and then pay someone to install it for you.

Why are you still using IE6?

I remember from one of your previous posts that you were still using Windows 2000! Dude, either install Linux or upgrade to Windows XP SP3 or Windows 7. We're getting tired of troubleshooting your decade old OS.

Spyware Doctor by PC tools is incredible. It has kept my computer safe for 3 years. Not a single trojan, virus, adware, it’s great. I have Malwarebytes too but it never finds anything since the above does such a good job.

Dude - I just spent about an hour on the phone with eBay and PayPal to upgrade my "decade old" passwords with them.

Actually, my recollection is that those passwords date from 1999, so I've had them for about 11 years now.

Well, I was doing everything right - auto updates, malicious software removal tool, etc etc etc - and I still got burned.

So I guess it really is time to ditch IE6 once and for all.

Which is a crying shame, because [from the point of view of user ergonomics] Firefox is a steaming pile of swine feces.

Maybe I'll try Opera.

Your right. His best bet is download Google Chrome and see if the problem is confined to IE or it’s a something system wide. Oh yeah, and delete his hosts file.

OMG, get away from that.
I have had TWO cards stolen and I never use them on the Internet.
Run don’t look back.

On some old browsers, it’s possible to float fake image text over the Address Bar.

eBay and Paypal have a Verisign code device that costs $5 and generate a different six digit code every time for every sign in. I highly recommend getting it. Even if someone steals your information, they can't sign in to your accounts without it.

You might also look into getting Lifelock if your information has already been compromised.

I really hate this business of having to upgrade every other month. I have XP...works fine for me, but I understand that Microsoft is phasing out the tech support for it...wants everyone to migrate to 7. That sux. My computer is a little over a year old; why should I have to upgrade? And some of these “improvements” aren't really. My brother installed Vista on his computer; had a helluva time. I think he went back to XP.

I have friends who have Apple and love it. None of this BS. One of my friends just told me today her computer wasn't working; so she took it to an Apple store. It was fixed for no charge, plus she obtained some new diagnostic software free of charge. Next time I need a whole new system, that's what I'm going for.

Yes, I’ve had that show up when I logged in once , too. Sent a notice to eBay that their login page had been hacked.

Thanks for pointing that out. Sure sounds like someone with English as a second language wrote that. And fraudsters is an odd choice.

I know they don’t. I sell on ebay. I think it is important that he also let them know it.
