President Obama wins showdown with GOP

The Senate confirmed a huge group of administration nominees on Thursday, following a tense exchange between President Barack Obama and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.).

At a White House meeting with bipartisan congressional leaders on Tuesday, Obama warned that he would make recess appointments if the logjam over nominees wasn’t broken before the Senate left for the Presidents’ Day break.

“Mitch, this is unprecedented,” the president said, gesturing forcefully on the Cabinet Room table, according to aides. “If you don’t move any, I’m going to do some [recess] appointments.”

The 27 confirmations mean no recess appointments will be needed during this break, top administration officials said. Recess appointments, which a president can make when Congress is not in session, are temporary and generally last to the end of the year.

Was the NLRB nominee one of them?

The one who wants to mandate unionism?

Baltimore and now this. The GOP is a bunch of cowards. This kind of crap drives the Tea Party people further away from the GOP.

They would last just as long anyway. If Obama says its unprecedented, Mitch could easily bring up all of the Senate “rules” they wish to do away with. A bone at this point may be OK. He is the President. The tide has turned and the machine takes a long-time to crank up.

Not because of this particular thing. Here's what another part of the article said...

A senior Senate Republican leadership aide said: "We cleared something like 35 nominees before the last recess, too. That’s what happens before a recess. This isn’t because anyone blinked."

I don't see what the problem is... LOL...

It's either you let them out of the hold or they're in, anyway... so what's the big deal?

The truth of the matter is that the GOP differs in degree, but not in kind, from the Democrats. They are rivals within the same franchise, when we seek an entirely new game. Both parties manipulate and extract at our expense.

The GOP is the weak sister in this Punch and Judy, Bolshevik/Menshevik road show. Before this century is over, a deflated and abandoned GOP will merge with the Democrats as the bureaucrats and their welfare dependents resist those of us who will not surrender our liberties or substance to the State.

To listen to some FReepers, since these GOP guys didn't keep these nominees on hold for a few more days, they "lost" ... LOL...

Some people just want to make everything into a "macho-macho" deal or something. They were going in regardless of what anyone did.

So what is the resulting difference of “voting” these people in now or letting him sneak them in the back door later? A huge difference ... now the dumb Republicans have caved again, Obama looks good to have “picked people who could be given the job” and the Republicans have agreed with him. Had they said “up yours, Sir” then Obama would have been nailed in the press for “sneaking them in the back door during the recess” .. typically a Democrat-type move today! Dumb, Dumber and Dumbest ... The Republican Party is a joke. If you contribute to these jerks, YOU are part of the problem!

Did they cut a deal NOT to block some if some just go away? I could see that happening. If they didn’t get anything for folding many of them may becoming TOAST on Nov!

The GOP understands enough “voice” saved their skin to stop this apologist for furthuring his socialism. What is being presented here is a “pittance” for what is coming. The leaders of buisness in this Country will NOT hire until that need presents itself. That means weekends of OT for 6 months or better.

Mitch the Bitch screws us again. We need fewer gentlemen and more bombthrowers running the Senate for us. Bob Dole was a nice guy but terribly ineffective, and you saw how respectful George Mitchell was towards him >sarc

I don’t think anyone who’s opinion was up for grabs would care about Zero’s recess appointments one way or the other. I think this was just a cynical ploy on the administration’s part to fire up their moonbat base and make Mr. Empty-Suit look forceful. The GOP was right to nip this propaganda campaign in the bud. In any event, these nominees are meaningless, no need to get sidetracked over the small fry.

When the president makes recess appointments without senate approval, are these then permanent or good only during the recess? Any one know this?

If the recess appointments are permanent, what is the sense in holding them up before recess? If temporary, senators can fight them after the recess.
