WASHINGTON Shoppers jammed aisles and emptied stores of milk, bread and shovels Friday as a massive snowstorm blew into the Mid-Atlantic. Forecasters predicted a record 30 inches or more for the nation's capital, and authorities already were blaming the storm for the deaths of father-son Samaritans in Virginia.
The region's second snow storm in less than two months could be "extremely dangerous," and heavy, wet snow and strong winds threatened to knock out power, the National Weather Service said.
Flakes started falling around noon in Washington, where the federal government sent workers home early. The storm's wide swath and predictions of historic proportions for an area ill-equipped for snow had airlines canceling flights and school districts closing hours before any snow arrived.
The last time D.C. got at least 28 inches of snow was in 1922. The city has seen more than a foot only 13 times since 1870, according to the National Weather Service. The storm was expected to track through Virginia and West Virginia, across Maryland into southern New Jersey and Pennsylvania.

Has anyone seen Al Gore lately?
Anything that makes Washington grind to a halt is a welcome sight in my opinion.
I grew up in Virginia, lived 15 years in Georgia, and now live in Wisconsin. Snow like this is a big story because it's so unusual. Here in Wisconsin, 12 inches, big whoop. In Georgia or Virginia? Story of the year -- precisely because it's unusual and the localities are utterly unprepared for it.
I think I saw him this afternoon....
I guess there are worse places to be stuck.
We’re in WDW and in a tornado warning. It just pushed our return to BWI back 28 hours.
:)
It’s beautiful here in Oregon. Sunny and 56 degrees. I think my dog wants to go for a walk...
LOL
Some clouds here - will also take my dog for a run ....
Up here in Butler County...where you never know what you’re going to get...so far @4:15 roads ave covering ..about inch or so on my deck...still coming down hard and steady.
Not unusual to drive 5 miles north and there could be twice what we get or vice versa. Seems to be a line crosses here where either or can happen.
(Cogitator, you're exempted from the above crowd, as you seem to have more reason than most of these people. However, I still disagree with even your solution. If we ever meet in person, or I meet another pro-AGW Freeper, I shall simply try to talk you (him/her) out of the thing. The rest of these people can go to H*ll!)
The Global Warmers can have my lawnmower and my Mom's SUV when they pry them out of my cold, dead fingers. By the time they arrive, hopefully I will have purchased a shotgun, so that I can make it a really long day for them.
COME AND TAKE THEM, YOU B@ST@RDS!
(Oh the weather outside is frightful, etc., etc.)

Yep. Somewhere approaching crotch deep.
I heard Joe Bastardi say a little while ago that the rest of the winter would be really bad, but that it doesn’t mean we’re going into an ice age.
What a relief. We still have Global Whorming.
From a 6th generation Hill Country Texan, what’s the “snow” thing everyone keeps talking about.
Big pot of spicy chili on here in eastern Ohio ;) I’m watching the snow fall outside my office window. We’re supposed to get 6 to 7” but the snowfall started a lot earlier than expected.
I’ve got family in the DC area. They’re telling me that even gas stations are running out of gas.
The official TABLE GUAGE is reading about 2.5"...
Brian Wilson just did a live piece on FOX- from the local Safeway market- he said it’s unreal- people waiting in line forever to buy stuff..mass hysteria!
I think I know that cat! Just snow shovelled. We got a rain mix in there right now. But, that’s it I’m home for the duration. :)
BTW second storm on the way for next week....
My sister in Old Town Alexandria is reporting things like this as well. She's a weather geek, so she and my bro-in-law stocked up on grocery items a few days ago when they knew it was coming.
She said they hit the liquor store yesterday (to get the really high-priority supplies) and that was even running low.
My best friend and her husband also in the area (Reston) stood in line at a grocery store last night for almost two hours.
