German band, The Scorpions hanging up their hats after 40 years of rock

In this Feb. 21, 2009 file photo, the German rock band The Scorpions arrives for the Echo 2009 music award ceremony at Berlin, Germany. The band, known for its early 1990s hit "Wind of Change" among others, said on its Web site Sunday, Jan. 24, 2010, that "we agree we have reached the end of the road." (AP Photo/Michael Sohn, File)

Before Germany's current most successful rock band, Tokio Hotel, hit the charts—long before—there was The Scorpions. The German export was not only one of the most predominant voices of rock during the 80's and the 90's. But with the ballad Wind of Change and concerts in Russia The Sccorpions became one of the voices that sang about the wave of democracy sweeping through Eastern Europe during the late 80's and early 90's, including their native Germany, which saw the fall of the Berlin Wall.

According to The Local, The Scorpions is calling it quits after 40 years of playing music. However, their end won't be abrupt. The band will release it's next album Sting in the Tail and embark on a two to three year tour before the final end.

Bloomberg writes that the band's album is slated for release on March 19th. Rudolph Schenker from Hanover started the band in 1965. Over the course of its career, the band has release 20 albums and sold more than 100 million albums, making them Europe's most successful rock group.

You’ve been missing out!
I like their early stuff with Uli Jon Roth on guitar the best. Much more Hendrixy and bluesy than their later, mainstream hard rock stuff.

Great thread.
I’ve been a fan of Scorpions since “Blackout”.
My uncle bought me the LP as a birthday gift and it was love at first...you know.
After wearing the grooves off that brilliant hard rock album, I spent lots of money on the back catalog, discovered Michael Schenker (my favorite guitarist) and UFO, and endured the barbs of many of my hard-rock buddies for being such a diehard fan of the “Bald Boys Running Wild”.
Great career and ejnoy your rest, you deserve it.
I will certainly miss them, but have tons of material to try and fill the void.

NO doubt, the Uli stuff was great (Speedy’s Coming, In Trance, Walk In Your Park), but it was Matthias injecting new blood that really took those guys to a new level of success.

Awww man... One of my favorites. Saw them in concert twice... They’re getting up there though, and I have to admit to not being familiar with their latest works.

Totally agree with you re: Winds of Change. I kind of stopped listening to them after that! LOL

Still Loving You is probably my all-time fave by them, followed closely by No-one Like You. Can’t tell you how many times I listened to the albums “Worldwide Live” and “Savage Amusement”. Both of those came out when I was in High School. Grabbed some of their earlier albums after that.

Wow. I don’t know how many times I rocked out to ‘Rockin Like A Hurricane’ in my old Camaro while cruising around town back in the ‘80s.

Such good times.

ohmigawd! not that! too bad there isn't a category above breaking news to denote such cayaclysmic events as the decision by has-been bands to give it up.

Well, I looked, but all the 'news' articles about science debunking Darwinism had already been posted. ;-)

Agreed - but most of their stuff post 1995 has been weak compared to their late 70s - early 90s work.

“Holiday” off Lovedrive is a masterpiece, IMHO.

You’ve been missing out!

Maybe. If I ever heard them on the radio, I probably enjoyed their songs, but they obviously didn't make a lasting impression on me.

Don't get me wrong. They're probably as good as you say they are. I've loved bands that were one hit wonders. One that comes to mind is Automatic Man, who put out their first album on Island Records back in 1976.

They had one hit, "My Pearl", that totally made me a fan. The rest of the tracks on their first album were extraordinarily good, I thought. I wore that LP out.

Much as I loved them, they fizzled and disappeared from the scene. Big loss. They could have been one of the signature bands of that era.

I'll bet not one person in a hundred who listened to rock music in that era even remembers them, even though they were terrific.

Wind of Change was the worst song anyone could mention. I saw the Scorps four times in my life most recent was when I was pregnant six years ago. I also met them at Tower Records in NYC in 1984. I love them!
