(IsraelNN.com) A plane headed from LaGuardia Airport to Louisville made an emergency landing at Philadelphia International Airport Thursday morning because a 17 year old man on a plane was praying with tefillin, or phylacteries. According to Fox News, the man was questioned by airline personnel, who didn't get answers to satisfy them and diverted the plane to Philadelphia.

Wonder what that means...
So it was only prudent.
How embarrassing. Everybody know you have to watch out for those Jewish suicide bombers.
For those who don't know what the Tefillin is, it is a Jewish prayer ritual object.
If he was ultra-orthodox and they were female and he was in the midst of his prayers, he may not have been the best candidate for an interview. But as somebody said on another post, anybody who flies out of LaGuardia should know from phylacteries...
Guess people will know what is now.
I know SOMEWHAT what they are, but I live in a heavily Jewish neighborhood. Not sure if I have ever seen them in real-life though. I could see how people would not know about them.
I can see how somebody, especially a younger flight attendant, might not know what that is but it seems odd that nobody else on the plane could help to explain it to them. I’m not even Jewish and I know what it is.
An observant Jew doing morning prayers is just not a risk to the airplane.
It is a container for the a Shema, a passage starting from Deuteronomy 6:7, to be spoken by devout Jews three times a day. The V'ahavtah, usually spoken at the same time, says these words, "bind them as a sign upon your hand and as a reminder above your eyes." Hence Tefillin.
The paper, ink, and calligraphy of the words therein are carefully controlled.
Hysteria and panic do not protect people, and thats what this was. Leather straps and leather boxes are not fuses and little bombs. Major drop out of common sense in this case.
Fly with Weird Stuff and You better be questioned and give a decent answer fast! There is no excuse for terrifying other passengers by being obstinate!
LOL!
I have learned about how Jesus prayed by paying attention to the prayers of Jews. Bless God that they were entrusted with His very words. My children have not bound any boxes to their hands or heads, but His words are written on the cries of their hearts, the thoughts in their minds, and the deeds of their hands. We talk about them when we get up and lie down, when we walk in the way and when we sit about our homes. They are posted on our gates and doorframes.
God is good, and His love endures forever.
“How embarrassing. Everybody know you have to watch out for those Jewish suicide bombers. “
No, you have to watch out for islamofascist suicide bombers that pretend to be jews. They do it all the time in Israel.

but we’ll give security clearance and give the rank of Major to some guy called ‘Nidal Hasan’
what evidence do you have that the young man was “obstinate?”
The article says “they were not satisfied with his answers.” It also says he cooperated fully with authorities on the ground. I read this as idiot airline staff.
From memory:
“You shall place it as a sign on your forehead”
