I have suspicion that this was a photo-shopped picture. I suspected the same thing because cavalry units are organized into troops, not companies as indicated on the tombstome. But perhaps things were different back then or in that particular unit.

What is interesting is that when this guy died, the last genuinely honest Democrat to hold the office had been narrowly defeated for re-election and the party hacks had hoped it was the end of his career.
He came back to win re-election in 1892, the only man in the history of our nation to do so.
Ever since, while the Democrat party has produced an occasional great leader at the state or local levels, this was the last great president which they produced. That includes Harry Truman who, while personally honorable, was never the great president he is cracked up to be.

"Is he registered to vote?"
Yeah he is now a regular voter and he switched parties after his demise.

My GGGrandad was in the 3rd Indiana Calvary B Company. I believe the troop designation came out after the CW during the push west. Pension app is 6459 and indicates same, I have a scan.

If that is 'chopped, it is one good job. I don't think it's painted on but painted in the carved letters. Also the letters are irregular in shape and spacing. The 'chopper would have had to either draw and photograph the text and add it or hand draw it with a mouse (very hard to do).
Also, this has been posted at FR before. I think one or more FReepers have actually seen the headstone.

“I think this is the first tombstone that as far as I know the letters where painted.”
I cut inscriptions for a living and I’ve seen it many times and actually have a price for painting letters (as well as gold leafing). In the case of this marble monument sporting hand cut chisled letters; they would be hardly legible without black paint.

Ol’ Hickory spent his presidency fighting the bank of the United States (forerunner to the federal Reserve). Turns out he was ahead of his time.

they would be hardly legible without black paint.Yeah I dug up about a dozen tomb stones about two years ago, from a forgoten family cemetary. Most of the deaths were around the civil war time. Only a few were still there in the open, the rest had either been knock down or fallen down, the ones that fell down face up were still worn and you could hardly read them. But the ones that fell face down were almost just like new as far as the curvings went. I don't know if they were knocked down on purpose or just the earth and wind knock them down.
To: TalBlack
What type of paint would you use to paint the letters?
