Obama Offers Rhetorical Support to Iran Protesters -- Is It Enough?

President Obama offered rhetorical support Monday to anti-government protesters in Iran facing a bloody crackdown, but some analysts say the United States should do more than just "bear witness" to the unrest.

President Obama offered rhetorical support Monday to anti-government protesters in Iran facing a bloody crackdown, but some analysts say the United States should do more than just "bear witness" to the unrest.

Obama, in his first public remarks since arriving in Hawaii on vacation with his family, said the United States joins the rest of the world in "strongly condemning the violent and unjust suppression of innocent" Iranians. State television reported Monday that at least 15 people have been killed in the protests.

Obama's remarks were similar to those given regarding clashes in the wake of Iran's disputed presidential election. Obama said Monday that those "unjustly detained" should be released and called on Iran to respect the rights of its people.

As he did over the summer, Obama made clear that the United States' support for the protesters is in spirit and that he considers the unrest to be an internal issue that will work itself out for the better.

"What's taking place within Iran is not about the United States or any other country. It's about the Iranian people and their aspirations for justice and a better life for themselves," Obama said. "We will continue to bear witness to the extraordinary events that are taking place there. And I'm confident that history will be on the side of those who seek justice."

If this idiot ever makes a public statement without either “strongly condemning” or being “deeply saddened” I’ll fall over dead.

Maybe a stern letter to the editor? And use plenty of sarcasm, that always works.

This is way more than he did when the elections were held last summer.

I don't know what else we could realistically do - send military? Send arms? Send Jimmy Carter?

All of those would truly constitute interference and justify the coming crackdown (in the minds of the regime at least).

However, we have plenty of time, energy and resources to dedicate to strong arming Honduras into reinstating their impeached and constitutionally removed former President...

I rarely defend anything he does but he has to play it carefully with Iran.

If there is any hint at all from our government that we would support a regime change in Tehran then Khameini and Ahmadinejad will come out and say that it is a “U.S. backed coup” “just like 1953” and they will have a powerful tool to turn the country’s silent majority, who I believe are currently with the protestors, back towards the regime.

Obama truthfully needs to keep his damn mouth shut on this one. All that Iranian hostage stuff happened my senior year of HS. I ended up taking a scholarly interest in it. And I’m basing this on that.

We need to stay out of this completely and let the Iranian people do what they had to do. They overthrew the Shah who we backed without any international help in the 1970s. I think they can overthrow Ahmadinejad now.

0 will go down as the worst ever president this republic has had.

Thanks of course to the 67% voters aged 18-29 who voted for 0, the 65% Hispanics, yes, the 74% Jews, and not to forget those WHITE FEMALE, single, unmarried, or divorced women who, according to Gallup, voted “overwhelmingly” for this menace. Unfortunately, he will have done irreparable damage to the nation by the ti e he is voted out of office.

Disagree. Times have changed. This is a “people movement” against a brutal and repressive theocratic dictatorship. With the advent of the internet, people know exactly what this rebellion is all about- freedom from tyranny

BullShiite. This explains why The Magic Negro couldn't devote one hour over the weekend to pop into a Christian church and tell The Lord, "Thank you for being born and saving my heathen ass.". He was sitting in front of the ol' flat-screen with a big bowl of falafel and pulling for the 'home team'.

Let me guess he said something like: “I would like to express my deepest support for the brave Iranian protestors, especially the ones hiding out at 316 Razmallah Lane, Tehran. And that other group that texted me from the address bmahrani@yahoo.com. Oh, and how can I forget the ones planning to meet up in Revolutionary Memorial Square at 6 PM tonight.”
