Senior Dem: Kill the Senate health reform bill and start over
The Hill ^ | December 23, 2009 | Michael O'Brien

Posted on 12/23/2009 11:54:15 AM PST by ksm1

The Senate's healthcare bill is fatally flawed, a senior Democrat atop a powerful committee said on Wednesday.

Rep. Louise Slaughter (D-N.Y.), the chairwoman of the House Rules Committee and co-chairwoman of the Congressional Pro-Choice Caucus, said that the Senate's bill is so flawed that it's unlikely to be resolved in conference with the bill to have passed the House.

"The Senate health care bill is not worthy of the historic vote that the House took a month ago," Slaughter wrote in an opinion piece for CNN's website.

Slaughter argued that while the House bill is far from perfect, the Senate bill's exclusion of a public option, along with abortion funding restrictions and other measures, make the bill undeserving of a vote.

Specifically, Slaughter said, the Senate bill would charge seniors higher premiums, would fail to nix health insurers' antitrust exemption and would not go far enough in extending coverage to people in the U.S.

"Supporters of the weak Senate bill say 'just pass it — any bill is better than no bill,' " Slaughter wrote. "I strongly disagree — a conference report is unlikely to sufficiently bridge the gap between these two very different bills."

The New York Democrat also sounded a note similar to what Republicans have said (though for different reasons): Scrap the current healthcare bill, and start over.

"It's time that we draw the line on this weak bill and ask the Senate to go back to the drawing board," she said. "The American people deserve at least that."

You are deluded. The bill will be passed and it will be essentially the Senate version. We need to now concentrate on attacking it and responding to the Dem spin effort, which will do Goebbels proud

If you think the House is going to pass the Senate version, what is attacking it going to do?

If you think exposing the Bill for what they are will stop the House Democrats from supporting it, that makes sense.

If they are going to pass it no matter what it is done, then attacking the Bill is a meaningless waste of time.

The Senate version will not leave that Committee as is, not if it hopes to pass the House.

If I HAD to make a prediction today, I would have to predict that some form of the bill passes. It’s too damn important to The One and the democrats aren’t about to let him become The Once.

Passing “something” opens the door for authortarian health care and they can add to it until they lose their solid majorities.

onyx, it’s more than ideological. As they stare down the barrel of the gun that is the 2010 elections, the Dems will want to get some goodies like the “moderate” Senators got. It’s their last chance at any decent pork for a long, long time.

Even if they manage to keep the Senate bill intact ideologically, they won’t be able to resist the pork. They’ll stretch the CBO tricks to the limit. Like a flock of vultures, they’ll tear the corpse apart.

You are right that Obama has made this the be-all and end-all of his presidency and every Democrat is treating Obama as if he were a retarded child, needing some victory of some kind to help his self-esteem.

He is an adult and he can just let his presidency be defined by his military success, uh, his foreign policy, uh, his leadership, uh, well, something.

AmishDude!!!!! Is this really YOU?

Oh yeah, you’re right. The CBO won’t know what hit ‘em.
That non-partisan director likely hates the democrats by now..lol.

Like you, I can’t see House democrats letting the senate bill pass without piling on its own pork.

Here’s to townhalls between January 2 and January 17, 2010!

If you think the House is going to pass the Senate version, what is attacking it going to do?

We need to inform the public what is in it and what it portends for our future. Moreover, we need to frame the discussion in anticipation of a huge Dem propaganda effort to sell the bill prior to the midterms.

If you think exposing the Bill for what they are will stop the House Democrats from supporting it, that makes sense.

No, I realize that the Dems are not listening to the people. I have participated in numerous townhalls, tea parties, the 9/12 march on Washington, and the two follow-ups, written letters, sent faxes, and made telephone calls. We now need to make the Dems pay the consequences for their actions at the ballot box.

If they are going to pass it no matter what it is done, then attacking the Bill is a meaningless waste of time.

Not true for the reasons I cited. We need to inform the public and frame the issue. We must attack the Bill if we want to gain seats in 2010.

The Senate version will not leave that Committee as is, not if it hopes to pass the House.

It will not be changed appreciably in conference because the Senate is the more difficult House for the Dems to pass it. Pelosi will push it thru the House using her huge majority.

No sense in arguing about it, we can only wait and see what develops.

They are caught between a rock and hard place.

Neither Bill is acceptable to the other branch.

There is nothing left to compromise.

The anti-abortion language and Public option are nonnegotiable by both sides, and they are what is going to destroy this Bill.

You can't be that naive and gullible. Have you ever been involved in negotiations? First, this is an internal matter within the Dem party. Each faction will make their demands, but you can bet that they will reach agreement. In any real negotiation, each side starts with its optimum position, i.e., they ask for everything they want and make it sound like it is their final offer. Then the real negotiating begins.

You can bet that the Dems will compromise and reach an agreement. Failure to pass a health care bill will destroy the Obama administration and its future agenda. Moreover, it will wound the Dem party seriously and fracture it. The base will be angry and demoralized. The Dems have huge majorities in Congress not seen for almost 30 years. To squander it due to infighting is just not going to happen. There will be a health care bill passed. Unlike the Reps, the Dems are not suicidal.
