I dont travel in liberal circles much, so last night was a real eye-opener as to how much this country is in deep doo-doo.
I went to my brothers house (Marin County, CA) for our familys annual Dungeness crab feast. Its no secret in my family that my political position is hard starboard at flank speed, so out of deference to the occasion I made a personal vow not to steer the conversation to current events.
Alas, my best intentions were scuttled by my brothers neighbor lady let slip a snarky comment about Sarah Palin not believing in global warming.
I quickly asked her if she had seen the climategate emails, and she had NO CLUE what I was talking about. This woman has a daughter in university and is employed as a professional by Marin County. Its interesting to note that earlier in the evening she disclosed that she had spent several hours at Borders sipping coffee and reading trash magazines for free. She was fully versed on Tiger Woods.
In light of my vow, I let it drop until we left the dinner table. I took her aside and diplomatically asked if she was familiar with the axiom, Follow the money. She said she was, and I asked her what she thought about cap and trade. My jaw almost hit the floor when she revealed that she had NEVER HEARD OF IT!!! I gave her a very quick encapsulation of the scheme to trade air as a commodity and the people who stood to benefit from it.
Then we got to Sarah Palin
This was as the party was breaking up and we were headed for the door, so it was quick. Her position was that she did not like Sarah. I asked her why, and she said, I dont know, I just dont like her. So I asked her if it was like feminine intuition or something like that, and she agreed that was the case. So I asked her again, surely you must have a reason for disliking her? Her reply was something to the effect of a statement that Sarah had made about Bristols pregnancy. I said I wasnt familiar with what she was alluding to, but I did ask her if she had heard Sarah say that she could see Russia from her backyard, to which she quickly agreed that she had. I pointed out that it was actually Tina Fey who had uttered that famous quote.
To make a long story short, I suggested that she needed to do her research, and told her that the internet had newspapers from all over the world for free. Oh, like the New York Times, she said. I hinted that the NYT might be slightly biased, and suggested for a start that she check the BBC (I didnt want her head to explode) and the Washington Times. She honestly seemed interested in my suggestion, however her parting shot was,
I wont change, Im a social worker, you know.
God help us!
Rant mode off.
Palin's life/existance reveals the Lies of feminism. THAT'S why she doesn't like her. She wouldn't articulate it if she even could.
Marin Conty? And you expected??? hahah. They do not think. They do not read. They glom on to what is ‘cool’ and stick with it. So they can, at long last, be the ‘in’ crowd.
Well done.
You hit it on the head.
Never try to confuse a liberal with facts
and don’t challenge their orthodoxy.
There I translated the liberal statement for you.
How was the crab?
Sums it all up.
I hinted that the NYT might be slightly biased...
Only ‘slightly’ biased?
“I won’t change. I’m a social worker, you know.”
That right there is the problem with liberals. They believe in societal roles and stereotypes far more than conservatives do. Certain things to them are absolutely incompatible. Social worker/conservative, black/conservative, young woman/pro-life. This is quite the paradox coming from people who demand consideration of “gray areas.”
You can’t fix stupid.
They are complete idiots, numbskulls, and fools. They can reinforce their wretched beliefs by turning on CNN. What we say sounds like it comes from the moon in a foreign language. Most of what they believe about us is caracature and stereotype.
You punctured her beliefs or she wouldn’t have given you the social worker line. I work in a prison where the substance abuse counselors are all libs. They talk politics around me less and less. They don’t like hearing about the liberal jets and prostitutes at Copenhagen, and desires to tax their air and control power to their toasters. Commmon sense is a slap in the face to them. March on, my friend. Well done.
Being “cool” and “hip” and “trendy” - all aspects of being “liberal”.
Those attributes all translate into one thing - being “worldly”.
Jame 4:4
...don’t you know that friendship with the world means enmity against God? Anyone who chooses to be a friend of the world becomes an enemy of God.
Ooh add another to my list. Liberals don’t believe in woman/anti-feminist.
Good effort, but next time take along equipment for electroshock therapy. Blind liberal leftism is a mental disorder.
I am also glad that you took the time to educate people. Rush has been saying lately that what we CAN do is exactly what you did - be the one in your family who has the facts, and don't be timid about showing it. When people come to you with questions, or when they have no clue at all what is happening in the world around them, like this neighbor lady, be ready and willing to answer them.
Although it's truly discouraging to see such an uninformed and ignorant public, I found your story encouraging.
Thank you!
I live in the East Bay and work in San Francisco, and trust me, many of the Liberals here have NO idea about any current events, other than the regurgitated MSM lines and worship of Obama, even in the midst of his obvious failure(s).
This does not surprise me at all.
In a lighter note, how were the crabs? I had two for lunch on Saturday.
If it’s any consolation, one of my liberal friends insists he doesn’t like Palin because “she’s a bad mother”. Of course when pressed he won’t really discuss it beyond that so it becomes a dead end discussion. However, like your experience I have several expereinces with poorly informed liberals who are so convinced of their own “rightness” that they don’t bother to get any more infomration and would never ever think of questioning their own perceptions (or how they even got them).
