What Defines an Organism? Biologists Say 'Purpose.'
ICR News ^ | December 10, 2009 | Brian Thomas, M.S.

Posted on 12/10/2009 8:12:50 AM PST by GodGunsGuts

David Queller and Joan Strassmann, evolutionary biologists at Rice University, recently proposed a new way to describe what makes an organism a unified whole. They defined an organism as an entity made up of parts that cooperate well for an overall purpose, and do so with minimal conflict. But how do parts like these get together, and where does purposeful behavior come from?...

Get thee back to DU. Truly that is the level of their discourse there.

"Maybe I'm just not average enough to fully appreciate him--maybe I just need to know less."

That statement has greater depth than anything else I have ever read on a crevo thread. A tip of the hat to you.

"An orgasm does require purpose!"

Yes it does...to stay alive...

On a more serious note...dust does not require consumption.

Epic fail.

Inanimate objects have no self purpose, do they?

Sounds like “One purpose for all” is being derived from the same source of “One size fits all”...how monolithic and unimaginative. Of course, that is the purpose.

They defined an organism as an entity made up of parts that cooperate well for an overall purpose, and do so with minimal conflict.

Silly me. I always thought the way to determine whether or not something was an 'organism' was anything with the ability to reproduce.

What does Cyanobacteria “eat”?

and gas in a large enough quantity (like the sun) consumes itself.

...well gases do not necessarily consume themselves. A volume of gas will exchange energetic states until the inherent steric hindrances are eliminated through uniformity of conformation - losing heat as they do so - until they are rendered inert. (Couldn’t resist - the spaghetti monster made me do it)

My standards are obviously far above yours, otherwise I would be posting about how nature selects from random processes to create complex, specified, super-sophisticated digital DNA codes, while I ignored the fact that the only empirically verified source for complex, specified, digital codes are intelligent designers.
