Boise State, TCU Deserve Better

This should feel like a just reward for an offseason where the non-automatic qualifiers extolled their virtues in front of Congress, then reached unprecedented heights in the BCS era on the field.

It can't be understated that for the first time, two teams from outside of the major conferences have been granted access behind the BCS' velvet rope as No. 3 TCU and No. 6 Boise State will meet in the Fiesta Bowl. "I think the Fiesta Bowl, to their credit, is putting two very, very deserving teams on the field against each other," WAC commissioner Karl Benson said.

It's a statement, no doubt, but maybe not the one that this landmark moment should deliver, because the Broncos and Horned Frogs are having to play each other.

The Fiesta Bowl has created a matchup that seems more like a cop-out than an achievement; denying the two unbeatens a chance to validate their seasons against the big boys on the sports' biggest stage and opening up an entirely new chapter of BCS bashing/collusion allegations.

Agree 100%. The BCS is rigged.

"TCU could beat Alabama"

LOL! Thanks for the howler. The bottom line is that Texas and Alabama can beat either TCU or Boise State. The WAC and Big Sky conferences are generally weak sisters and should have fun in Tempe together. And they should be grateful that they get that stage to show off their un-defeated records. Of course, another reason they're not going to the big dance is because they couldn't possibly draw the revenue that a Texas/Alabama matchup will.

Oh, OK -- now I remember that. They were perennial doormats back then, right?

Yep, kinda like Baylor in today's Big 12.

I remember the days when Texas and SMU were the big names in that conference, and most other schools were also-rans.

Arkansas was also in the conference, but yes, those three were the big names, along with Texas A&M making a mark from time to time.

But your initial point holds - if TCU and Boise State can show they are going to stay quality teams, they should be able to fit into a major conference somewhere (although a requirement for Boise State to join a major conference should be for them to dye that stinkin' blue Astroturf green).

An AD/coach schedules for championships. Boise didn’t. They knew the BCS rules before the season began, and chose to schedule creampuffs. TCUs schedule was better, but still not lofty enough to get the slot for the Championship game. If Texas had faltered, TCU would have scheduled themselves for a higher ranking than BSU.

Thank you, and I was hoping UF would have gotten TCU, even though I think TCU will give UF a much tougher game than Cincinnati. I wanted to see what they could really do, I’ve been very impressed with them.

Both teams released the exact same statement:

Our team has been slighted by the BCS. Our perfect record has earned us the right not to be matched up with some no-where school that no one has ever heard of, from some no-name conference. Our perfect record and a strength of schedule similar to some Alabama or Texas High School teams has earned the right to play the third of fourth-place team from some major conference.

Sometimes it's a real toss of the dice for the BCS, and they're damned if they do, damned if they don't.

A couple of years ago they had a similar situation involving USC and Georgia. Rather than have these two teams play each other in the Rose Bowl, the BCS had USC play Illinois in the Rose Bowl and Georgia play Hawaii (then undefeated at 12-0) in the Sugar Bowl.

USC won by a score of 49-17 and Georgia won 41-10 -- which led many of the same sort of folks criticizing this Boise State / TCU matchup to wonder how the hell anyone let the two losing teams play against those national powerhouses.

Or every other division of NCAA football, or any other NCAA sport.

And then of course there’s the ridiculousness of calling it the Bowl Championship Series even though it doesn’t use the bowls in a series to declare a champion.

The bottom line is that Texas and Alabama can beat either TCU or Boise State.

Thanks to the BcS, we will never know for sure. We just have to rely on schedule (dubious data), polling (consensus), and computer programs. Sounds like global warming to me.

TCU could certainly beat Bama. Tide wins against Auburn and TN were not convincing. TCU has hammered nearly every opponent this season.

TX/AL/CIN/TCU all have the talent to win - it just depends on who shows up to play - you just never know. For that, they deserve the chance to play for the title.

...Alabama got lucky, they caught Florida on an off night. I thought the refs gave Alabama all the calls in the first quarter....near the beginning of the game, the Alabama defensive end grabbing Florida’s tight end jersy before he aught ball...no call....

Is that you Tim? Cry me a river. Waaa Waaa!

Roll Tide!

My old school is an FCS school, and has already been knocked out of the 16 team playoff field. The number one team in FCS got bounced in the quarterfinals this weekend. It’s the ONLY way to crown a true champion.

"What was TCU and Boise’s schedule like this year?"

Apart from Boise St. beating Oregon in the first game of the season, they both played sissy schools for most of the season.

You’re probably right. I just never remember either of those teams being national championship contenders — or sending any big-name players to the NFL back in the mid-1980s when I was a big fan of college football.

There will NEVER be a playoff system and teams from outside the BCS conferences will NEVER be in a #1 game. Never.

As football fans, we have been deprived of the best possible matchups. The BCS guys are there to protect their teams from their conferences, but they are shooting themselves in the foot here. Situations like this always result in more calls for a playoff. One day those calls will be too loud to ignore.

You make it sounds so easy that teams like Boise and TCU and other small colleges can just join the major conferences. Breaking in the major conferences is like breaking thru the BCS.

Strength of Schedule for the unbeatens this year (out of a total of 120 teams):

Alabama - #1
Texas - #31
Cinci - #45
TCU - #74
Boise State - #83.

Interestingly, only two non-SEC teams in the nation had a tougher schedule than Vanderbilt (the easiest schedule in the SEC.)

I think it’s ridiculous to call anything from this point forward a “National Championship Game” when we all know that last weekend’s SEC Championship was really the national title game. :-P
