The vitamin D miracle: Is it for real?
Globe and Mail ^ | 3-30-09 | Martin Mittelstaedt

The claims have been sensational. Martin Mittelstaedt checks up on the research behind the hype

###

In the summer of 1974, brothers Frank and Cedric Garland had a heretical brainwave.

The young epidemiologists were watching a presentation on death rates from cancer county by county across the United States.

As they sat in a lecture hall at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore looking at the colour-coded cancer maps, they noticed a striking pattern, with the map for colon cancer the most pronounced.

Counties with high death rates were red; those with low rates were blue. Oddly, the nation was almost neatly divided in half, red in the north and blue in the south. Why, they wondered, was the risk of dying from cancer greater in bucolic Maine than in highly polluted Southern California?

*snip*

Exposure to sunshine varies dramatically depending on the latitude. What if that's what was behind the varying cancer rates?

Their hypothesis, painstakingly developed and published six years later in the International Journal of Epidemiology, was that sunlight has a powerful anti-cancer effect through its role in producing vitamin D in bare skin.

Those living at northern latitudes, they theorized, receive less sunlight and make less of the vitamin, which in turn increases their risk of dying from cancer.

Today, with vitamin D so much in the news, it's hard to believe that it took decades for the Garlands' hypothesis to gain traction in the mainstream medical community.

But the benefits of vitamin D are no longer restricted to cancer prevention:

Studies have linked a shortage of the compound to such serious, chronic ailments as multiple sclerosis, diabetes, heart disease, influenza and schizophrenia.

I got some natural vitamin D today and it was only 28 degrees for a high with about three inches of snow on the ground.

According to the NIH, that's not possible. At the latitude of Boston you can make no vitamin D from sunlight in the months of Nov., Dec., Jan. and Feb.

Thank you so much for that information - all of it!

Good that you and your mom can share those wild stories...and laugh about them!

Talk about begging the question. They could have just as well said that bacon reduces cancer since we here in the south will wrap darned near anything in a slice of bacon.

LOL .. unfortunately most bacon.. much as we
all love it, crave it .. is one of those
foods that contains sodium nitrate .. which
has been shown to be a carcinogen.

http://www.thecancerblog.com/2006/06/26/avoid-nitrates-in-foods-when-possible/

There are brands of nitrate free bacon out there:

...These vitamins - you took but they did not help your vision?...

I say they didn’t help as I’ve been wearing glasses since I was nine. Nearsighted w/astigmatism. Took my vitamins regularly (and still do)...didn’t help. AND, just had cateract surgery on both eyes. Now I see wonderfully :0)

Was that high of a dosage recommended? Perhaps I should inquire about it. I’m willing to try anything as the diet and exercise part never did anything.

Just checking the A4M site (American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine.)

I typically average 300mg a day .. here’s their info:

Coenzyme Q-10
Posted on 2005-12-30 20:01:01 in Co-Vitamins & Co-Factors | Mitochondria |

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) was discovered by scientists at the University of Wisconsin in 1957. It is also known as ubiquinone, from the word ubiquitous meaning “everywhere”. CoQ10 is a powerful antioxidant found in every cell of the body, where it has important functions within the mitochondria - the “powerhouses” of cells.

ROLE FOR ANTI-AGING:

CoQ10 is popular as a supplementary treatment for several heart conditions in Europe, Israel, and Japan. Researchers believe that CoQ10 aids the heart during times of stress, possibly by helping it to use energy in a more efficient manner. It is most commonly used for congestive heart failure (CHF), however research has showed that it may be of benefit in other illnesses, including AIDS, angina, cancer, diabetes, male infertility, muscular dystrophy, obesity, and Parkinson’s disease. However there is no clinical proof of its effectiveness in treating these conditions. CoQ10 is also known to help prevent aging of the skin, and is a common ingredient in many moisturizers.

DEFICIENCY SYMPTOMS: None known

THERAPEUTIC DAILY AMOUNT:

The recommended dosage of CoQ10 ranges from 30 to 300 mg daily, usually taken in 2-3 doses. The majority of research on CoQ10 for the treatment of heart conditions has used doses ranging between 90 and 150mg. No RDA has been established.

MAXIMUM SAFE LEVEL: Not established

SIDE EFFECTS/CONTRAINDICATIONS:

CoQ10 can interact with many different types of drugs; therefore, anyone taking any form of medication, especially cholesterol-lowering drugs, should consult their doctor before taking CoQ10. Pregnant and breastfeeding women should check with their physician before taking CoQ10.

Here’s their pages on statins:

Dangers of statins .. what you haven’t been told

http://www.westonaprice.org/moderndiseases/statin.html

Excerpt:

Cardiologist Peter Langsjoen studied 20 patients with completely normal heart function. After six months on a low dose of 20 mg of Lipitor a day, two-thirds of the patients had abnormalities in the heart’s filling phase, when the muscle fills with blood.

According to Langsjoen, this malfunction is due to Co-Q10 depletion. Without Co-Q10, the cell’s mitochondria are inhibited from producing energy, leading to muscle pain and weakness. The heart is especially susceptible because it uses so much energy.14

Co-Q10 depletion becomes more and more of a problem as the pharmaceutical industry encourages doctors to lower cholesterol levels in their patients by greater and greater amounts. Fifteen animal studies in six different animal species have documented statin-induced Co-Q10 depletion leading to decreased ATP production, increased injury from heart failure, skeletal muscle injury and increased mortality.

Of the nine controlled trials on statin-induced Co-Q10 depletion in humans, eight showed significant Co-Q10 depletion leading to decline in left ventricular function and biochemical imbalances.15

Yet virtually all patients with heart failure are put on statin drugs, even if their cholesterol is already low. Of interest is a recent study indicating that patients with chronic heart failure benefit from having high levels of cholesterol rather than low.

Researchers in Hull, UK followed 114 heart failure patients for at least 12 months.16 Survival was 78 percent at 12 months and 56 percent at 36 months. They found that for every point of decrease in serum cholesterol, there was a 36 percent increase in the risk of death within 3 years.

.

STATINS AND CoQ10

Although symptoms usually resolve on stopping the drug, for a proportion of those who have contacted us, muscle symptoms – pain or weakness – or peripheral neuropathy may persist when the drugs are discontinued.

There is published scientific evidence that statins lower coQ10 levels in a dose-dependent fashion; that low levels of coQ10 relate to muscle and brain pathology; and that restoration of coQ10 may lead to diminution of symptoms in those with muscle or cognitive problems.

We have received a number of anecdotal reports from statin users who developed muscle problems who report benefit from adequate doses (which vary from person to person) of coenzyme Q10 supplements, which are available over the counter.

There is also one small controlled study that reported benefit of coQ10 to statin muscle symptoms. There are also controlled studies showing benefit of coenzyme Q10 supplementation in persons who have low levels of this biochemical not necessarily related to statin use. Coenzyme Q10 should be in gelcaps, in an oil or vitamin-E base to be absorbed.

Boy Lipitor, etc. ... they can be very tough on the body. An INFORMED cardiologist needs to be consulted on all of this. The side effects can be scary ... the heart is a MUSCLE. Prayers that you find the right regime for you.

Thanks for all of that. I see more struggles in this life to find some answers...doesn’t seem some doctors will tell you everything you NEED to know and only what they can prescribe to HOPEFULLY make things better. AIN’T WORKIN’!!

The anti-sun scare or alarmism is so ingrained in people these days that if you go out without sunscreen on ...you will die! This past summer I told a few folks I make a point to lay out in the sun for at least 15 minutes a day...they literally went into a litany over it. It really was quite an amazing conversation that day.

I have to make an appointment with my doctor next week and will add Zetia and coq10 to my list of questions. I definitely will ask about Welchor also. He makes me come in every 6 months or won’t refill my prescriptions. I like that in a doctor, He keeps tract of whats going on with me. This last time he only prescribed for 30 days so I have to go see him....Since I pay for my own prescriptions he will give me a 3 month supple at a time but will only refill it once. (He’s young and cute so I don’t care) I am old not dead, always appreciate a great smile...

I do believe that Vitamin D is helpful, however, there is one Crux in my claw. The Flu (the very thing it is supposed to help prevent) is just as bad in Florida and all other VERY SUNNY states as it is in the North. So, in large part, the evidence suggests otherwise.

Bilberry is good mostly for circulation to the capillaries in the eyes and is good for night vision. Lutein is the ideal supplement for macular degeneration. The macula is made up mostly of lutein.

And Lutein by itself will stop or prevent macular degeneration. Info here: lutein info

If you look at point on a grid of lines (like an excel sheet or graphic paper) and the lines look wavy or broken, that is from macular degeneration. The treatment is cheap and easy, but most mainstream doctor's know nothing about it and will let their patient's go blind.

I lost the thread but a doctor in a prison gave inmates in her wing 2000 units per day of D3.

Flu hit the prison bad. Not one person in her ward got the flu.

She then did controlled study and learned the mechanism that prevented flu. It also prevents resultant pneumonia.

Flu season is precisely that when there is minimal sun exposure
