Story here.

The suspect is named Abdulsalam Al-Zahrani.

Ironically, his victim, Professor Richard Antoun is described as "a caring and gentle man who spent his life trying to dispel stereotypes about different cultures, especially Middle Eastern cultures"

It was reported yesterday that he was an anthropologist interested in religious fundamentalism among Christians, Jews, and Muslims.

I don’t think any of us thought it likely that he was stabbed by an angry fundamentalist Jew or Christian.

I have been to several conferences at Binghamton over the years, and had several friends on the faculty there. This is very sad. It’s a close-knit community.

Two interesting comments from the source:

Prof. Richard T. Antoun was a Jewish convert, ... Prof. Richard T. Antoun had a Muslim grand-father and a Catholic grand-mother ...
Islamic law Prof. Richard T. Antoun Stabbed, Killed at Binghamton University by Grad Student, Antoun Wrote the Book Understanding Fundamentalism: Christian, Islamic, and Jewish Movements.

A question: grandfather a Muslim, not a Christian? But ANTOUN is the Arabic form of the Christian saint’s name, ANTHONY...

WAKE UP BIGNHAMTON....Religion has nothing to deal with this. The student was not granted money to finish his dissertation (possibly due to lack of funding). Dr. Antoun and Al-Zahrani were working together on disproving stereotypes of religions. That means that they were working together to help others understand the difference between EXTREMISM and RELIGION.

To those comments, I would add that the problem is that Muslims don’t discuss or argue about their religion—they get angry at the drop of the hat, kill you first, and then maybe feel sorry they lost their temper. That is especially true if you raise an issue that is problematic—such as, does the Qran tell Muslims to kill infidels?

I have taught the Bible as literature to large mixed classes that included all kinds of Christians, all kinds of Jews, many agnostics, and some youngsters who never opened a Bible in their lives and have no idea what it’s about. I often discussed Christian and Jewish interpretations of various passages, but left Islam strictly out of it. It’s not something you can safely discusss, and fortunately it’s not immediately relevant to the Bible.

Well the good professor must have done something to earn the ire of this member of the ROP.

They describe him (the professor) as tolerant. Mainstream Islam is self-admittedly, PROUDLY intolerant. What we in the West think of as the 'real' Islam is really a gentler offshoot more suited for the twenty-first century rather than the majority of Islamists who are still in a thirteenth century mindset.

Remember, to them, it's a virtue to eliminate everything that doesn't agree with them, either by book or sword. (Conversion or death for those who haven't heard the phrase before.)

I was being sarcastic (I should have used the "/s" , not your fault :) )

I have no quarter for Islam of any kind, as you say, devout Muslims are the most dangerous, and the rest are enablers. Islam is not a "religion of peace" by any stretch of the imagination.

“I feel bad for him, but the guy should have known better.”

I’m confused - I’ve been following this story and I’m not sure exactly what it is you think this professor did? Or didn’t do?

As President Soetoro so wisely said, "We may never know what caused this mysterious tragedy, or what motivates a man to something something something..."

Frowning takes 68 muscles.
Smiling takes 6.
Pulling this trigger takes 2.
I'm lazy.

I wonder if it ever occurred to the professor that Islam has zero tolerance for diversity. Given a chance, they would squash all other religions like a bug.

If I were not such a nice and understanding type, I would be prone to encourage this kind of behavior among the Followers of the Prophet. As long as they limited themselves to targeting the Self-Annointed "Progressives," I can't really see a down side.

There is nothing more Shadenfreudish than hearing of a liberal being done in by his own smug "cultural understanding."

Admit it. Wouldn't you have laughed out loud if one of those "human shields" in the Gulf Wars had stopped a bullet, or been reduced to a pink spray by a smart bomb?

"...what it is you think this professor did?..."

Read post number 26, which is a pretty sad commentary (& a bit hypocritical) in itself.

I did read that.

Funny thing is - this guy was advocating for muslims.

Now I’m sure it’s possible he ticked off this kid in a religious issue - but it’s also possible this kid simply didn’t have the academic chops to move further on with his dissertation.

The professor was hired to do a job and this student was assigned to him.

I don’t think we know enough yet to accuse the victim of somehow bringing this on himself.
