Climategate: The Fix Is In
Jewish World Review ^ | November 24, 2009 | Robert Tracinski

Posted on 11/24/2009 6:06:41 AM PST by reaganaut1

The [CRU] e-mails show, among many other things, private admissions of doubt or scientific weakness in the global warming theory. In acknowledging that global temperatures have actually declined for the past decade, one scientist asks, "where the heck is global warming?... The fact is that we can't account for the lack of warming at the moment and it is a travesty that we can't." They still can't account for it; see a new article in Der Spiegel: "Climatologists Baffled by Global Warming Time-Out." I don't know where these people got their scientific education, but where I come from, if your theory can't predict or explain the observed facts, it's wrong.

In another e-mail, a prominent global warming alarmist admits to using a statistical "trick" to "hide the decline" in temperatures. The "trick" consists of selectively mixing two different kinds of data—temperature "proxies" from tree rings and actual thermometer measurements—in a way designed to produce a graph of global temperatures that ends the way the global warming establishment wants it to: with an upward "hockey stick" slope.

Confirming the earlier scandal about cherry-picked data, the e-mails show CRU scientists conspiring to evade legal requests under the Freedom of Information Act for their underlying data. It's a basic rule of science that you don't just get to report your results and ask other people to take you on faith. You also have to report your data and your specific method of analysis, so that others can check it and, yes, even criticize it. Yet that is precisely what the CRU scientists have refused.

But what stands out most in this cache of e-mails is extensive evidence of the hijacking of "peer review" to enforce global warming dogma.

This is the greatest hoax since Piltdown Man

This is much bigger than Piltdown Man.

When they started trying to push the "science is settled" BS I immediately knew we were witnessing the biggest fraud in human history. Thank god it has been exposed.

A friend just suggested filing a class action suit against the perpetrators of this fraud. In the US that would be Mike Mann, James Hansen, Al Gore, and a laundry list of kool-aid drinking "climatologists". I'm not sure if such a suit is feasible, but if so I'd love to see it happen.

Does Congressman Billybob still post on FR? I'd like to see his take on such a suit.

I hate to be the cynic, but sometimes cynicism and realism fall into alignment. I know this story has gotten a fair deal of traction in Europe, but apart from a few conservative sites and talk radio, there's been dead silence on this story in the U.S. I look at how the Rockefeller Memorandum played out a few years ago, when bald faced admissions were made that the Dems were going to use the Senate Intelligence committee data for outright political purposes. The media manipulated the story in such a way that the deliberate misuse of the data was a non-story, and the "scandal" became all about how the memorandum fell into the hands of GOP staffers. I suspect a similar course for this story. Our culture has been so saturated with the global warming myth that virtually every person has heard the phrase, and may give more or less credence to it. The truth is, most Americans have never, nor ever will hear about the "CRU emails" and will dismiss it as a sideline story in the ongoing debate...reading the details would just take too much work.

I wish it were not true, and certainly, I'll do my share in the Sisyphean task of trying to educate my acquaintances, but even as startling as these revelations should be to thinking people, I suspect they will be of little import when it comes to results. < /wet blanket>

This is a collapse of the biggest cult to ever emerge. There must be many "believers" looking for a new god because mother earth, temporarily, has just been saved.

Now I can put my favorite bumber sticker on my car without it being keyed:

You’re right.
There are so many people invested in “Anthropogenic Global Warming” that this story will be a non-starter here.

Some of the scientists who disagreed and were identified in the emails and singled out for exclusion from journals and the peer review process, should file suit against the individuals and universities involved. I hope this happens. It will be the most effective way of taking these people down. The universities will distance themselves from the perpetrators very quickly.

Don’t give up hope. The Lewinski story started very slowly, also. This thing has legs. The media will be pulled kicking and screaming into this. This is a game changer.

I notice these type of articles are carefully avoiding using Al Gore’s name, even though he must be at the heart of this matter.
You can bet there are major scrubbing operations going on in computers all over the globe...

The big difference with this story is that most of the public has been pretty skeptical of AGW despite the attempts at wholesale brainwashing. This revelation will fall in line with that pre-existing disposition, and confirm what a majority already believe--that it's a bunch of baloney. Politicians watch public opinion, and will not fall on an AGW sword they themselves don't even really believe. It would be nice if the GOP would put up some spokespersons calling the 'rats out on this fraud.

You are correct that the scientists who were wronged should file suit, but the American People have also been wronged. Falsification of data by these frauds has led to costly and unnecessary regulations that have cost taxpayers billions of dollars. They have also received grant money from the US government based on fraudulent claims. I have no doubt they should be criminally liable, but I think they should also be civilly liable for the economic harm they have caused.

I know I'm tilting at windmills here, but I'm in a mood to pile on while the piling's good.

Reports of my FR death are greatly exaggerated. LOL.

Suggestions of an appropriate law suit to solve a major problem at a single blow, are usually misplaced. They are also contrary to the conservative approach to judging. Remember, our approach is that judges should hew to the law, and only render decisions which are given by the Constitution to them for action.

There are standing problems, and proving actual damages to the Plaintiffs in the case. The better approach is to use the document dump to smack the legislators who still think global warming is real. They need to be smacked on the nose with a rolled-up newspaper, like a puppy that has just crapped on the floor.

Senator James Inhofe is on it. Inhofe Says He Will Call for Investigation on "Climategate" on Washington Times Americas Morning Show

I emailed him over the weekend about it. Not sure if my email prompted this statement (probably one of many). He is calling for an investigation.

LOL! Good analogy and thanks for the reply. I figured the idea of a class action suit was not the right approach, but figured I'd try to get you to weigh in.

My local lib rag, The La Crosse (Wis) Tribune, has not yet printed anything about the scandal. Or barely anything at all about anything that contradicts the global warming hysteria. However it has printed today a very large article by Seth Borenstein (AP) about how the results of AGW have been much worse than feared. Big Lib Media is a quite willing accomplice in the scam.

I disagree. I think this story will gather legs as more and more scientists that have been "shelved" are now free to speak openly to this scam.

It starts with bloggers, but I foresee the scientific community using this to vindicate honest scientific practices that, for too long, have been pushed aside by the Global Warming phonies.

This is the greatest hoax since Piltdown Man

The Piltdown man was nothing more than a joke. Nobody was proposing changing the world economic system simply because they had found the "missing link".

This is the greatest hoax (Fraud) in the history of science, and nothing else comes close. Here we had a bunch of so-called scientists manipulating data in order to control the world's economies and shutting down the capitalist system. And everyone from John McCain to Lindsey Graham were not only on board, but were and remain active cheerleaders for the fraud.

These people are too entrenched to give up quietly. The release of the e-mails was just the first shot of the war. The global alarmists have been dealt a serious wound, but unless we go in for the kill, they will rise again. Their agenda has not stopped. They must kill the engine of progress and prosperity in the world.

The next alarm will be that CO2 is causing a coming Ice Age. They will produce the data to prove it. They will ridicule any who deny it.

Yep. The socialist media will be no more successful in covering this up than they were in covering up Van Jones, ACORN, etcetera. This is way bigger than anything that has come down the pike in the last several months.

And sooner or later, the climate change hucksters will be called to account and made to answer for their lies. Maybe not today, but in a year, or three years, or seven years, but sooner or later it WILL happen.
