A man thought by doctors to be in a vegetative state for 23 years was actually conscious the whole time, it was revealed last night.
Student Rom Houben was misdiagnosed after a car crash left him totally paralysed.
He had no way of letting experts, family or friends know he could hear every word they said.
Rom Houben was trapped in a coma for 23 years and had no way of letting anyone know he could hear what they were saying (pictured posed by model)
'I screamed, but there was nothing to hear,' said Mr Houben, now 46.

I’m with you, but it’s not happening anytime soon short of NOT avoiding Sulla.
See, we have a problem. Did you see the sentiment of many on this thread? Younger generations have been imbued with the thought that it’s better to be dead than “endure” in such a state. The teachers who tried to teach me “better red than dead” but failed, managed to convince later American students that “better dead than intravenously fed.”
Herr Houben can thank his lucky stars that he lives in contemporary Germany, rather than Hitler’s Germany, or contemporary Holland, England, or Florida.

"You wouldnt make it 3 months in a coma under obamadeth. They will take those scarce resources and make them available to some other higher purpose. The government will pull your plug and you wont be able to stop them."Just think of all the abortions that could have been performed with the money that was spent on this guy! That's what our magic muslim mulatto leader will do if possible. mmm mmm mmm!

I dont think that condition is a fair comparison to this one. Two different scenarios.

I dont think that condition is a fair comparison to this one. Two different scenarios. Precisely.
Herr Houben apparently did not have a spouse who wanted him dead.

Tales From the Crypt (1972) had a scary scene where a woman wanted her dead husband “alive” again after he died. He had been embalmed so he woke up screaming from the pain.

Yeah. I guess if any of start feeling like we have it rough we should come back and read this story.

Exactly what I was thinking. It seems that every time I have been in a tight spot in my life and started feeling sorry for myself, I run into someone who is much worse off than I am. I have come to see it as the Holy Spirit elbowing me to be grateful for all that I do have.

Remarkable he retained his sanity. I dont think I could.
One of the comments likened his condition to being buried alive but kept on life support. I WOULD go insane........

I'm a minor sort of ham, casual conversation type, but my husband is a die-hard DXer - he's at 335 right now, ARRL having belatedly allowed his Yemen contact. Needs N. Korea (the biggie), Kingman Reef, and Glorioso.
I need to put him to work on figuring out a ringtone.

As my mom was dying earlier this year, she wasn't in a coma, but spent much of the time in a pretty deep sleep (pneumonia, congestive heart stuff).....the nurses - all of 'em - would remind us that she was probably "hearing" us as we'd discuss her condition.
It really did comfort us a bit as we were saying our farewells.
