WASHINGTON Invoking the memory of Edward M. Kennedy, Democrats united Saturday night to push historic health care legislation past a key Senate hurdle over the opposition of Republicans eager to inflict a punishing defeat on President Barack Obama. There was not a vote to spare.
The 60-39 vote cleared the way for a bruising, full-scale debate beginning after Thanksgiving on the legislation, which is designed to extend coverage to roughly 31 million who lack it, crack down on insurance company practices that deny or dilute benefits and curtail the growth of spending on medical care nationally.
The spectator galleries were full for the unusual Saturday night showdown, and applause broke out briefly when the vote was announced. In a measure of the significance of the moment, senators sat quietly in their seats, standing only when they were called upon to vote.
In the final minutes of a daylong session, Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., accused Republicans of trying to stifle a historic debate the nation needed.

It is time we face it, the Republicans have been bought. When this country is finally destroyed by the Democrats and The Marxists are putting us in boxcars, the seating Republicans will be laughing it up in their private gated communities with their best friends the Democrats.
Listen, pal. You're the one who sat behind your keyboard spouting the defeatist, succumb-to-Marxism bullcrap. Now you want me to prove my bravery to you???
You have got to be kidding.
Find a pair and stand tall with your brothers, or go quietly to your enslavement.
He must not realize that RATS opposed abolishing slavery.

That’s a good time FOR FIGHTING AND NOT FOR CONCEDING/SURRENDERING.
Debates are only beginning.
Guess that pressures have been tough on “moderate Democrats” behind the doors.
And guess that the means are not very smart or fair...Would be interesting to know how all this is going!
OBA MAO promised transparency and “change”...
Conservatives should speak louder in LOUISIANA NEBRASKA...
:)We strated in the projects.
:)((((((Hugs))))))))))
We must do all we can to stop it now...and failing that turn congress over so strongly in 2010 that the legislation nver has a chance to go into effect and can be overturned in 2011.
Tea parties are going to be headed to campuses across the country according to a report I saw on Fox News yesterday. We need to let the students know that they are the ones who will be saddled with the massive debt. Tuition and healthcare is not going to be free as they were fasely led to believe during the campaign. In fact, college students are now going to be taxed according to the report. They also need to know that it is their premiums that will skyrocket to pay for seniors. In the future, it is their paychecks (if they are lucky enough to get one) that will be taxed at 60 percent or more. They need to know that the degree they are going into debt for will be worthless. We, on the right, need to educate the this generation and let them know just how bleak their futures will be if ths passes. We must all become activists against this takeover of healthcare and our economy. The ONLY beneficiaries of these socialist programs will be inner cities. THIS IS reparations in the minds of the creeps in the administration.
AP lies.
FWIW Has anyone heard of this? I eceived this email from a trusted source:
Please forward to everyone you know
HR 615 On Tuesday, the Senate health committee voted 12-11 in favor of a two-page amendment, courtesy of Republican Tom Coburn which would require all Members of Congress and their staff members to enroll in any new government-run health plan.
Congressman John Fleming has proposed an amendment that would require Congressmen and Senators to take the same health care plan that they would force on us. (Under proposed legislation they are exempt.)
Congressman Fleming is encouraging people to go to his Website and sign his petition. The process is very simple. I have done just that at: http://fleming.house.gov/index.html
Senator Coburn and Congressman Fleming are both physicians. Regardless of your political beliefs, it sure seems reasonable that Congress should have exactly the same medical coverage that they impose on the rest of us.
Please urge as many people as you can to do the same!
I would hope this would not end up on Obama’s desk, but if it does is there any hope for a check to balance it back by SCOTUS?
Except Vodka.
Did you notice how that ‘conservative’ Sen Lieberman (ID-CT) voted “Yea” on the bill to allow it to proceed?
Even ‘Republican’ Arlen Specter (D-PA) voted for it.
We are screwed, this thing is going to get passed.
We are screwed, this thing is going to get passed.
Pretty much so as now other cloture votes will be used to close debate and bring the bill to a vote. They can vote for cloture and use the excuse we are just giving the bill a chance to be voted up/down while they themselves can vote against it. The final passage will only need a 50 vote total plus Biden as the tie breaker.
He didn't want to lose his committee chairmanships. Reminds me of how he talked real big during Clinton's impeachment but then voted not to convict.
