WASHINGTON Invoking the memory of Edward M. Kennedy, Democrats united Saturday night to push historic health care legislation past a key Senate hurdle over the opposition of Republicans eager to inflict a punishing defeat on President Barack Obama. There was not a vote to spare.
The 60-39 vote cleared the way for a bruising, full-scale debate beginning after Thanksgiving on the legislation, which is designed to extend coverage to roughly 31 million who lack it, crack down on insurance company practices that deny or dilute benefits and curtail the growth of spending on medical care nationally.
The spectator galleries were full for the unusual Saturday night showdown, and applause broke out briefly when the vote was announced. In a measure of the significance of the moment, senators sat quietly in their seats, standing only when they were called upon to vote.
In the final minutes of a daylong session, Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., accused Republicans of trying to stifle a historic debate the nation needed.

Isn’t he “retiring”? Too bad, he was ever elected, not much improvement over Glenn, who OH thought a “hero”.
Right - thanks for correction. Still true that the best way to put a stop to it was for Joe to vote no today. If any of us had that power in our hands today.... would we miss that chance?
So you don’t have to guess what Joe will do later. POS.
As I said in another post, Reid didn’t have to pay her anything. She would have still voted for “health care” for her “poor” constituents. She is a true socialist believer who draws a lot of Republican support in LA, as did her predecessor, the big spending J. Bennett Johnston, Jr.
Gore knew his man in LIEberman. And Lieberman had Republican support too in 2006.
On Saturday, Sen Joe Lieberman (I) seems committed to voting with the Democratswith whom he continues to caucusto allow Reids bill to come to the floor.
Not so fast, you will still have to pay Baucus and Tester. MT people believe in socialism too.
Jumpin’ Joe is covering his Clymer.
I don’t think Joe wants to stop it in principle. He’s a prostitute and is just dickering over his price for an aye for passage.
The major point being that this bill has no business being debated as it is totally wrong. Abort it and start over.
I’m not sure what’s up with that guy from Ohio who didn’t vote.
That means SHeets Byrd voted Chicago style... from the coma...
I never thought it was possible to hate a person I’ve never met, then Obama bribed his way into the White House.
God help me but I hate this man and everyone who supports him.
God forgive me...
I don’t have mmuch younger family and neither do they.
One uncle, Me.
Dad is gone.
plus the gov will rule their lives.
You never know though.......They are smart kids.
Crap....
Thanks for ruining my dream.
Dream?????
Where’s the cyanide?
Reid thought it was Karl Marx.
How dare Reid accuse opponents of this bill to those who opposed the end of slavery! I'd like to sue him for slander.
Nah. He had a liberal priest who absolved him of all his work on behalf of the Devil.
You don’t know me, you don’t know what I have done, will do, think, am capable of, etc.
So quit assuming you’re high and mighty. You’re just a self-important ass. That’s pretty clear.
Cowardice. Prove it or shut up.
Just think for a moment. These crude remarks by Harry Reid were not some off the cuff quips.
They were thought out beforehand and delivered to inflict damage to those who dare oppose him and his agenda.
How this man can be a practicing Mormon and dreg up such hate speech is beyond my comprehension. He brings shame upon others of his Religion, just as the Liberal “Catholic” Politicians bring shame on my Religion when they support Harry and his Traitorous Legions.
