WASHINGTON Invoking the memory of Edward M. Kennedy, Democrats united Saturday night to push historic health care legislation past a key Senate hurdle over the opposition of Republicans eager to inflict a punishing defeat on President Barack Obama. There was not a vote to spare.
The 60-39 vote cleared the way for a bruising, full-scale debate beginning after Thanksgiving on the legislation, which is designed to extend coverage to roughly 31 million who lack it, crack down on insurance company practices that deny or dilute benefits and curtail the growth of spending on medical care nationally.
The spectator galleries were full for the unusual Saturday night showdown, and applause broke out briefly when the vote was announced. In a measure of the significance of the moment, senators sat quietly in their seats, standing only when they were called upon to vote.
In the final minutes of a daylong session, Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., accused Republicans of trying to stifle a historic debate the nation needed.

“Invoking the memory of Edward M. Kennedy”
The Chivas must of been flowing through the halls.
All i got is Bud to kill the pain.
It seems that in the future Bud is alll i’m gonna get to kill the pain also.
Maybe Jack....
The best way (and probably the only way) to stop the bill was for him to have voted no TODAY and he knows it.
When the Government gets your money before you do, you are a slave.
Stock up on your yummy food now before it’s all banned for the common good......And to keep costs down.
WTF?
And were unable to vote outside of DC. How many times in the past few decades has the senate passed a bill that's saved us money? Not many.
Can it still be filibustered (anyone know)? :)
They don’t listen. Can this still be filibustered?
I feel sorry for my poor nephew Sean and my neice Lauren.
They are 4 and 12.
There will probably be nothing for them to inherit and they are gonna be all alone.
Sad
Can this still be filibustered?

NOW HEAR YE THIS MY FELLOW PATRIOTS:
This has become “those people’s” high-water mark...their Little Big Horn if you will. They control the ‘Hill’...but they are vastly outnumbered.
2013 is a year of no coincidence. You see patriots, all involved know that the nation’s very foundation will crumble upon the burden that these policies will enable both financially and socially. “Those people”, though ignorant in general, are NOT ignorant of their own present condition of power. They are fully aware that they may not hold such thrift-store prestige as they do today. 2010 may very well introduce a demise of their self indulgent power. 2012 may also conclude their commander’s power as well...all of course acting on the assumption that elections are still ‘free’.
2013 will introduce the bulk of this heinous proclamation known as ‘Health Care reform’(pay no mind that it has been constantly leveled that it must occur NOW or those grouped in the millions will die soon as a result of inaction. Hold thy breath a bit longer you millions for your perceived rescue won’t begin for 4 years....) and it may very well be that “Republicans” again control many of the power pedestals and puff-parlors as “those people” currently do at the present moment.
While we in the spirit of the first Continental Congress do not forget truth so easily, be assured brethren that the vicious whores, beggars, theives and liars in the church of mass media will willingly and feverishly attribute all misfortune and ruin to the “Republicans”...carefully reminding the mind herniated ‘citizens’ that their only hope still remains in the party of those who speak with the devil’s forked tongue and empty promises. Afterall, what good is Utopia without the hope for an even greater one.
To the Godless, they have become gods..To the fatherless, their minions yell “abba father” with opened hands and sealed minds. THUS the fallen will see to it that “those people” are again placed upon their thrones, setting up yet another chapter in an endless cycle...
...WHO will see to it that the carousel stops....
2013 is indeed an interesting year.
Open your eyes fellow patriots and see that exactly 150 years prior to the afformentioned year your ancestors did not remain complacent. They did not wonder....they did not simply complain...they did not remain idle merely hoping all would ‘end well’.
What is it that they did in 1863?
They shed their blood both on distant lands and in their own front yards. From the Wilderness of Chancellorsville to the Round Tops of Gettysburg to the aptly named River of Death in Chickamauga, they bled so they would be in bondage to no one but their Savior.
Some blood poured through Blue wool, some through Butternut and Grey...ALL for the reason of ending bondage, whether it be their own or that of a fellow human being.
I tell you now...both North and South, both East and West...we are ALL in bondage once more. Enslaved by a tyranny unseen but in dusty volumes recollecting centuries of old.
It is ever apparent that out own volume of history is opened, eager to be filled with the tales of those brave enough to put God and country before self.
Finally I urge you to hear this.
2010 is ALSO a momentous anniversary.
One year and One month from yesterday marks the 150th year since South Carolina’s departure from a country they no longer knew.
The times are different and the means certainly no longer the same.
However, the figurative batteries of James Island are again trained upon Fort Sumter....
WHO among us will be OUR Edmund Ruffin...
Anybody got a nice cabin in Montana for sale?
Preferably in the middle of nowhere. Really....
They are all bastards and I hope they all have death panels they have to face when it comes their time.
What was i thinking?
Any booze over 2.5 percent alcohol will most likely be banned.
For the common good.
This wasn't the cloture vote. The bill can still be filibustered and it still requires 60 votes to end "debate" (cloture).
Why are they going to be alone ?
Obama will be known for health care and socialism as Che is known for cool communism. Expect T- shirts and adoring crowds of young people. McCain thought the best of Obama and was wrong — his operatives and advisers were working, directly or indirectly, for the democrats. Liberalism promises free stuff for easy going people, conservatives promise that life is a struggle. Which would you prefer? Conservatism may go the way of the dino for a while or it might rebound energetically with Palin. If the Democrats have their way they will shut Palin down. For all the conservative twitter do-rights that don’t want to dirty their hands by using dirty Democrats tactics in this struggle, they can kiss their ass goodbye. McCain (Mr. “bring a knife to a gun fight”) not only kissed his ass goodbye but he did it to the people he represented. Times are very serious — the nation is changing. So kids who are debt ridden in the future expect to wear your Obama T -shirt all the time because you’ll have no other clothes. Revolution is cool, if not friggin cold.
Yes. They still require another 60 votes to end debate and bring it to the floor for a “real” vote.
It figures that an idiot like Specter wouldn't know that the meaning of cloture is "vote to end debate".
