American squeamishness about talking about sex has helped keep common sexually transmitted infections far too common, especially among vulnerable teens, U.S. researchers reported Monday.
Latest statistics on chlamydia, gonorrhea and syphilis show the three highly treatable infections continue to spread in the United States.
"Chlamydia and gonorrhea are stable at unacceptably high levels and syphilis is resurgent after almost being eliminated," said John Douglas, director of the division of sexually transmitted diseases at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
"We have among the highest rates of STDs of any developed country in the world," Douglas added in a telephone interview.
The administration of President Barack Obama has signaled a willingness to move away from so-called abstinence-only sex education approaches promoted by his predecessor, George W. Bush, and conservative state and local governments.
Several studies have shown such approaches do not work well and that it is better to encourage abstinence while also offering children and teens information about how to protect themselves from diseases as well as pregnancy.
"We haven't been promoting the full battery of messages," Douglas said. "We have been sending people out with one seatbelt in the whole car."

maybe allowing those infected with HIV to enter the US will help. \sarc
Everyone should flip through the graphs in the source document.
Free love, the gift that keeps on giving.
That’s what happens when you confuse the output with the input!
You do understand that a person with HIV/AIDS was denied admittance to the US until mid-Clinton administration when he repealed this rule?
Well, if smoker have to cough up (no pun intended) extra $ to pay for their bad habits, how about a $20 tax on gay bar cocktails (also no pun intended) and a $100 admission charge to gay bathhouses to defray the cost of AIDS and the other diseases they get and give-and get and give.....
I’m not gay and I don’t smoke—but I can at least understand sticking a cigarette in my mouth.......
Huh? Seems to me that American culture does practically nothing else *but* talk about sex.
It is the sex positive agenda's absolute rejection of abstinence on human sexual responses. If it feels good do it. Experiment.
They consider abstinence UNHEALTHY because it is a supression of sexual desires.
Abstinence blocks the transmission of disease (and pregnancy) every time it's applied.
Instead the establishment's attitude is "everybody does it" and has now proceeded to tell girls that there is no stigma in getting HPV, "everybody catches THAT one now...".
“American squeamishness about talking about sex has helped keep common sexually transmitted infections far too common,”
No, American promiscuity and if-it-feels-good-do-it immorality is what has kept us awash in infections.
We talk about it ALL THE TIME. TV, radio, movies, books, schools, newsrags. . .
It’s true. Queer sex is far more likely to kill a participant than smoking (tobacco).
I’ve just petitioned Google to make it easy to find things about sex.
LOL. It’s “squeamishness” about “talking about it.” If I’m feeling squeamish and you walk within ten feet, do you get VD?
And with the increase in syphilis in the homosexual community I will guarantee you that the rate of AIDS infection is going to sky rocket as well.
It is not squimishness in regards to talking about sex that is the problem. The problem is that all too many folks think that it is okay for youngsters to engage in whatever behaviour makes them feel good. Too bad. Death awaits so many of them -—— many of these STDs are silent killers
When will they be put on the endangered species list?
Gay sex is icky !
It's worse. Queer, promiscuous sex contributes to developing resistant strains of microorganisms. This particularly applies to AIDS. Researchers work overtime, because the virus readily mutates and adjusts itself to existing drugs. In the meantime, queers engage in "sex" and share between themselves different variations of the virus, facilitating the survival of more and more resistant pathogens. Later, if they pass this to some non-queer, the drugs won't work...
All their problems are behind them...
If this stuff is all over the media - out in the open - I shudder to think what is promoted behind closed doors at the schools. America could use a little squeamishness. Make that a lot.
It’s been 7 years since we’ve had cable. I’m always shocked when I watch commercial television now.
We have a Netflix instant-view beeber and can watch selected (mostly older) tv programs without commercials.
If there’s anyone over 10 in the US today who doesn’t know that sex causes pregnancy and spreads disease, they must be some of those dreadfully strict homeschoolers we read about but never meet in Real Life.
