Twelve people have been killed and 31 wounded in a shooting spree at a Texas military base by what officials believe was possibly carried out by an Army officer.

The suspected gunman was identified by ABC News as Major Malik Nadal Hasan.

The shooter was killed and two other suspects, who are also soldiers, have been apprehended, Lt. Gen. Robert W. Cone said.

The gunman used two handguns, Cone said. He wasn't sure if the shooter reloaded the weapons during the attack.

Fort Hood Offers 24-Hour Grief Counseling

By U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Joy Pariante
Special to American Forces Press Service

FORT HOOD, Texas , Nov. 12, 2009 – In the aftermath of the Nov. 5 shootings here that left 13 dead and 38 wounded, soldiers, family members and civilians who work on post are looking for answers, and for help in grieving.

Following any loss, individuals and communities go through a grieving process which can be complicated, unpredictable and long-term. Fort Hood leaders have set up a Grieving Center at the Spiritual Fitness Center within the Resiliency Campus that is being staffed 24 hours a day with chaplains and Military Family Life counselors to help anyone in need.

Since the massacre, the Spiritual Fitness Center has doubled the number of chaplains and Military Family Life counselors on duty to ensure there are enough to meet with all the people who need someone to talk to, , said Chaplain (Maj.) David Waweru, on-site coordinator of the Spiritual Fitness Center.

Although the shooting was over in a matter of minutes, the grieving and healing process will take much longer to run its course, Army chaplains said. “An event takes a second, but the complete ramifications can take months or years to show the strain it’s put on people,” said Chaplain (Capt.) Edward Harris, 4-4 Attack Reconnaissance Battalion.

The five-stage grieving process model developed by Elisabeth Kubler-Ross, which she and David Kessler have written about, is widely accepted as a standard list of steps taken by someone who is moving through a healthy process of grieving, according to the National Institute of Health.

The first stage of grief is denial and denial, along with shock, helps to numb people to the event and enable them to keep moving through each day. Stage two is anger, where the individual lashes out at many different people in an attempt to channel all the denied feelings into something tangible. Stage three is filled with “If only” and “What if” statements. The bargaining stage deals with people trying to “make a deal” in order to make the pain stop.

Stage four of the grieving process is one of the most widely known stages of grieving – depression. This is when a person truly deals with their feelings of loss. While painful, it is a necessary step towards healing. The final stage of the grieving process is acceptance. It doesn’t mean that you’re all right with losing someone; it just means that you’ve learned to live with the event. People can move on and begin to enjoy the activities and people in their lives again. It is necessary to reach this final stage in order to fully cope with a traumatic event or loss.

While it seems structured, the process isn’t actually a checklist and there is no timeline for how long each stage will last. “People will grieve differently,” Waweru said. “The process of getting back to normalcy is different from one to another. There is no time limit. Some will be done as soon as this week, but others will take longer.

“The Fort Hood family is dealing with a tragedy, which is initially accompanied by shock and, later, denial,” Waweru said. Following the initial period of four or five days, most likely after the memorial ceremony … people will start processing how the incident affected them personally, he said.

“Everyone is holding up together right now, but as time goes by you’ll start seeing the individual reactions,” he explained. “Unfortunately, many soldiers are used to these kinds of tragedies in combat.”

One of the best ways to better cope with the feelings and issues arising from an incident like this is to try and return to a regular schedule, Waweru said. Getting involved in hobbies and interests again is a good way to help readjust to life following a traumatic event, he explained.

Soldiers are encouraged to look out for themselves and others in the coming weeks to make sure everyone is learning to cope with these tragic events. According to Harris, difficulty sleeping, withdrawal, depression and coping difficulties are signs that indicate that soldiers are having issues with the grieving process.

“Everyone knows himself; if you feel you’re not where you’re supposed to be, that should be a red flag to seek help,” Waweru said.

Following the initial adjustment period, the Spiritual Fitness Center staff will be working with brigade and battalion elements to ensure that soldiers having coping issues receiving long-term help and care, Waweru said.

(U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Joy Pariante is assigned to the Special Troops Battalion, III Corps.)

“Hasan Called Himself ‘Soldier of Allah’ on Business Cards”
Thursday, November 12, 2009

Business cards like this one were found in the apartment of Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan.

SNIPPET: “Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan called himself a “soldier of Allah” on business cards found in his apartment after the shooting rampage at Fort Hood in which he is accused of murdering 13 people.

Hasan, an Army psychiatrist, reportedly obtained the business cards over the Internet. In addition to listing his profession and contact information, the cards contain a discrete reference to his religion: “SoA(SWT).”

Watchdogs say the first letters are shorthand among militant Muslims to “soldier of Allah.” The last letters refer to “Subhanahu Wa Ta’all,” which means “glory to God.”

The business cards were among numerous discoveries in Hasan’s apartment of interest to investigators, who also are looking into whether Hasan wired money to Pakistan before last week’s massacre.”

“Fort Hood victim brought home
Bolingbrook honors fallen soldier”
By Joel Hood
Tribune reporter
November 13, 2009

SNIPPET: “The body of slain Army Pfc. Michael Pearson returned home Thursday as hundreds paid their respects during a somber procession through Chicago and the soldier’s hometown of Bolingbrook.

At Bolingbrook High School, where Pearson graduated in 2006, waves of students lined the parking lot to watch the passing motorcade. Members of the school’s ROTC program, to which Pearson belonged for his freshman year, wore their navy-blue service uniforms and saluted the fallen soldier as the silver hearse came into view.

Pearson, 21, was one of 13 soldiers — three from the Chicago area — killed last week in a shooting rampage at Fort Hood in Texas.

A bomb specialist, Pearson was set to deploy to Afghanistan in January.”

“Texas congressman: Fort Hood jihadist wired money to Pakistan”

SNIPPET: “Post-Traumatic Wire Transfer Disorder? Maybe that’s what made him “snap,” because, as you know, the mainstream media insists it can’t be Islam. “Fort Hood shooting suspect sent money to Pakistan, Texas congressman says,” by Dave Michaels and Lee Hancock for the Dallas Morning News, November 13:

An Austin congressman said Thursday that he has confirmed that Fort Hood massacre suspect Nidal Malik Hasan wired money to Pakistan, which Muslim extremist groups use as a base to raise funds and carry out terrorist attacks.

Rep. Michael McCaul’s statement followed a Dallas Morning News report that authorities were looking into whether such wire transfers had occurred. It also came as Army officials announced charges of premeditated murder against Hasan, who could face the death penalty.

“I have confirmed through independent sources that there were communications and wire transfers made to Pakistan,” McCaul said in a prepared statement provided by his spokesman. “This Pakistan connection just raises more red flags about this case and demonstrates why it’s important for Congress to exercise its oversight authority.”

The spokesman, Mike Rosen, said McCaul wouldn’t name his sources. The congressman’s statement didn’t address who Hasan’s contacts in Pakistan were, when he communicated with them or how much money he sent.”

(Yemen) Security Forces Pursuing Mastermind of Texas Attack (Yemen Press Ties Hasan To Terrorist)

Security Forces Pursuing Mastermind of Texas Attack

Yemen Post Staff

Yemeni security forces are currently pursuing cleric, Anwar Al-Aulaqi, who allegedly had links to N(i)dal Hassan who carried out the deadly attack in the port of Fort Hood army base, opposition media reported.

Reports have revealed that there were links between the two men where Hassan was frequently visited a mosque in the state of Virginia, in which imam Al-Aulaqi was leading prayers.

It is reported that the Yemeni authorities had arrested Al-Aulaqi in 2006, on suspicion of holding up religious militants to kidnapping foreigners, but he was released due lack of evidence of any direct link to Al-Qaeda.

It is also reported that Al-Aulaqi who uses its website to urge Muslims in the world to kill American soldiers in Iraq, had disappeared some eight months ago in Yemen.

The Yemeni security authorities say they believe Al-Aulaqi is hiding now a mountainous area in Yemen, which is believed to be one of the safe havens for Islamist militants.

According to investigations conducted by the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation, Al-Aulaqi had sent Hassan 20 e-mail via the Internet in a few months last year.

A few days ago the Washington Post reported that investigators were looking into possible links between Al-Aulaqi, who was working as Imam of a mosque in Virginia, and officials in Al-Qaeda, including two of the perpetrators of the attacks of 11 September.

Hassan, who was a psychiatrist in the army, had opened fire from two handguns on the soldiers in a hospital in Fort Hood army base, before police were able to prevent him from shooting.

Weekly Address: President Obama Calls for Comprehensive Review of Events Leading to Tragedy at Fort Hood

WASHINGTON – With the investigation into the tragedy at Fort Hood ongoing, President Barack Obama used his weekly address to call for a careful and complete review of what happened before the tragedy.

The full audio of the address is HERE. The video can be viewed online at www.whitehouse.gov.

Remarks of President Barack Obama
Weekly Address
November 14, 2009

This was a week for honoring the extraordinary service and profound sacrifice of our men and women in uniform.

Every fall, we set aside a special day to pay tribute to our veterans. But this year, Veteran’s Day took on even greater poignancy and meaning because of the tragic events at Fort Hood.

On Tuesday, I traveled there to join with the Fort Hood community, the Army, and the friends and families of the victims to honor thirteen of our fellow Americans who died – and the dozens more who were wounded – not on some distant shore, but on a military base at home.

Every man and woman who signs up for military service does so with full knowledge of the dangers that could come – that is part of what makes the service of our troops and veterans so extraordinary. But it’s unthinkable that so many would die in a hail of gunfire on a US Army base in the heart of Texas, and that a fellow service-member could have pulled trigger.

There is an ongoing investigation into this terrible tragedy. That investigation will look at the motives of the alleged gunman, including his views and contacts. As I said in Fort Hood, I am confident that justice will be done, and I will insist that the full story be told. That is paramount, and I won’t compromise that investigation today by discussing the details of this case. But given the potential warning signs that may have been known prior these shootings, we must uncover what steps – if any – could have been taken to avert this tragedy.

On the Thursday evening that this tragedy took place, I met in the Oval Office with Secretary of Defense Gates, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff – Admiral Mullen, and FBI Director Mueller to review the immediate steps that were necessary to support the families and secure Fort Hood. The next morning, I met with the leadership of our military and the intelligence community, and ordered them to undertake a full review of the sequence of events that led up to the shootings.

The purpose of this review is clear: We must compile every piece of information that was known about the gunman, and we must learn what was done with that information. Once we have those facts, we must act upon them. If there was a failure to take appropriate action before the shootings, there must be accountability. Beyond that – and most importantly – we must quickly and thoroughly evaluate and address any flaws in the system, so that we can prevent a similar breach from happening again. Our government must be able to act swiftly and surely when it has threatening information. And our troops must have the security that they deserve.

I know there will also be inquiries by Congress, and there should. But all of us should resist the temptation to turn this tragic event into the political theater that sometimes dominates the discussion here in Washington. The stakes are far too high.

Of all the responsibilities of the presidency, the one that I weigh most heavily is my duty as Commander-in-Chief to our splendid service-men and women. Their character and bravery were on full display in that processing center at Fort Hood, when so many scrambled under fire to help their wounded comrades. And their great dignity and decency has been on display in the days since, as the Fort Hood community has rallied together.

We owe our troops prayerful, considered decisions about when and where we commit them to battle to protect our security and freedom, and we must fully support them when they are deployed. We also owe them the absolute assurance that they’ll be safe here at home as they prepare for whatever mission may come. As Commander-in-Chief, I won’t settle for anything less.

This nation will never forget the service of those we lost at Fort Hood, just as we will always honor the service of all who wear the uniform of the United States of America. Their legacy will be an America that is safer and stronger – an America that reflects the extraordinary character of the men and women who serve it.

Thank you.
