Twelve people have been killed and 31 wounded in a shooting spree at a Texas military base by what officials believe was possibly carried out by an Army officer.

The suspected gunman was identified by ABC News as Major Malik Nadal Hasan.

The shooter was killed and two other suspects, who are also soldiers, have been apprehended, Lt. Gen. Robert W. Cone said.

The gunman used two handguns, Cone said. He wasn't sure if the shooter reloaded the weapons during the attack.

SNIPPET: “Anwar al-Awlaki, the cleric with whom Hasan had some contact, is not well known on the Arabic forums. For example, this reference to him relies on U.S. reporting and his English-language sermons. However, he is a very big deal in the English-language jihadisphere. Awlaki’s blog is part of the same cluster of blogs that includes Ignored Puzzle Pieces of Knowledge and Iskandari, whose author, Tarek Mehanna, was arrested by U.S. authorities several weeks ago.”

“Taliban promises repeat of Fort Hood massacre: report”

By Nick Allen in Fort Hood

SNIPPTE: “The SITE Intelligence Group, which monitors jihadist websites, said it had picked up a Taliban message praising the attack.

The message said: “The recent attack on the military base in Texas warns that if the occupation policy of the American rulers continues in this way, without them folding the carpets of occupation and transgression in Afghanistan and Iraq, it is natural then that incidents and attacks similar to Texas will spread to the Pentagon and other American military centres.

“According to media reports, the hero of the attack is a Muslim psychiatrist and major in the American army, of Palestinian origin.”

Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan killed 13 people and wounded 29 in the attack...”

KILLEEN (November 11, 2009)-Fort Hood shooting victim, Spc. Logan Burnette, 24, shared his story of survival Wednesday morning from Metroplex Hospital in Killeen.

Burnette said he was sitting in the Soldier Readiness Center last Thursday when a gunman now identified as Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan walked in, shouted, "Allahu Akbar!" and then began firing into the crowd.

The Arabic phrase translates to mean "God is great" in English.

Burnette said he threw a chair at the gunman, who then fired, striking Burnette in the hip and abdomen.

One bullet remained lodged in Burnette's hip.

Burnette escape to a nearby building where EMS workers treated him and then transported him to Metroplex Hospital in Killeen.

Because he was still recovering from his injuries, Burnette was not able to attend Tuesday's memorial service on post.

An emotional Burnette said Wednesday the gunman was "swift" and "precise" in his shooting.

He downplays his own actions, saying, "There were a lot of heroes that day."

He's scheduled to be transferred to San Antonio later Wednesday to continue his recovery.

Once he's gone, Fort Hood civilian police Sgt. Kimberly Munley will be the only injured survivor of the shooting still at Metroplex.

She and another officer, Mark Todd, are credited with shooting Hasan and ending the rampage.

Munley was shot in an exchange of gunfire with Hasan.

Todd was not injured.

Hasan, meanwhile, remains under guard at Brooke Army Medical Center.

He has an attorney, but has directed the hospital not to release any information about his condition.

At Fort Hood, Witness Credits Second Officer
NY Times ^ | 11/11/2009 | James C. McKinley, Jr.
Posted on November 11, 2009 9:27:52 PM PST by Saije

Sgt. Kimberly D. Munley has been applauded as a hero across the nation for shooting down Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan during the bloody rampage at Fort Hood last week. The account of heroism, given by the authorities, attracted the attention of newspapers, the networks and television talk shows.

But the story of how the petite police officer and the accused gunman went down in an exchange of gunfire does not agree with the account of an eyewitness who had gone to the base’s processing center, where the shooting occurred, to conduct business before being deployed.

The witness, who asked not to be identified, said Major Hasan wheeled on Sergeant Munley as she rounded the corner of a building and shot her, putting her on the ground. Then Major Hasan turned his back on her and started putting another magazine into his semiautomatic pistol.

It was at that moment that Senior Sgt. Mark Todd, a veteran police officer, rounded another corner of the building, found Major Hasan fumbling with his weapon and shot him.

How the authorities came to issue the original version of the story, which made Sergeant Munley a national hero for several days and obscured Sergeant Todd’s role, remains unclear. (Military officials also said for several hours after the shooting that Major Hasan had been killed, although he had survived.)

Six days after the deadly shooting rampage at a center where soldiers were preparing for deployment, the military has yet to put out a full account of what happened.

At a news conference outside the post on Wednesday, Lt. Col. John Rossi refused to take questions about who shot Major Hasan or why the initial reports said it had been Sergeant Munley rather than Sergeant Todd.

Fort Hood shootings suspect may have wired money to Pakistan
Dallas Morning News ^ | 11/12/2009 | Dave Michaels
Posted on November 11, 2009 9:55:00 PM PST by Saije

Authorities have been examining whether Fort Hood massacre suspect Nidal Malik Hasan wired money to Pakistan in recent months, an action that one senior lawmaker said would raise serious questions about Hasan’s possible connections to militant Islamic groups.

Rep. Pete Hoekstra, R-Mich., said sources “outside of the [intelligence] community” learned about Hasan’s possible connections to the Asian country, which faces a massive Islamist insurgency and is widely believed to be Osama bin Laden’s hiding place.

Hoekstra, the ranking Republican on the House Intelligence Committee, would not identify the sources. But he said “they are trying to follow up on it because they recognize that if there are communications – phone or money transfers with somebody in Pakistan – it just raises a whole other level of questions.”

Much remains unknown about the 39-year-old Hasan, born in Virginia to Palestinian immigrants. He lived alone near the Army base in Killeen, Texas, and would sometimes use a neighbor’s computer even though he had his own.

Investigation Continues Into Fort Hood Shooting

The FBI continues to work closely with the Department of the Army in the joint, ongoing investigation into the tragic events that occurred last Thursday at Fort Hood. Our thoughts and prayers continue to be with the victims and their families.

With respect to the investigation—the Army Criminal Investigative Division is leading a coordinated criminal investigation with the support of the FBI and other components of the Department of Justice and the Texas Rangers. The investigation is in its early stages, and the information we can provide now is limited.

With respect to what the FBI is doing—personnel from the Counterterrorism Division, Laboratory Division, and the Critical Incident Response Group (CIRG) are on site in support of the tragedy. The personnel deployed by the Laboratory and CIRG are specialists in crime scene analysis, evidence collection, and shooting incident reconstruction. Our victim assistance teams are working closely with their counterpart Department of Defense specialists, and we will continue to provide whatever resources are necessary to support the investigation.

At this point, there is no information to indicate Major Nidal Malik Hasan had any co-conspirators or was part of a broader terrorist plot. The investigation to date has not identified a motive, and a number of possibilities remain under consideration. We are working with the military to obtain, review, and analyze all information relating to Major Hasan in order to allow for a better understanding of the facts and circumstances that led to the Fort Hood shooting. Understandably, there is a large volume of information in various forms, and it will take us some time to complete this work.

There has been and continues to be a great deal of reported information about what was or might have been known to the government about Major Hasan prior to the shooting.

Major Hasan came to the attention of the FBI in December 2008 as part of an unrelated investigation being conducted by one of our Joint Terrorism Task Forces (JTTFs). JTTFs are FBI-led, multi-agency teams made up of FBI agents, other federal investigators, including those from the Department of Defense, and state and local law enforcement officers. Such task forces are designed to bring investigators and analysts into a collaborative, information-sharing environment in order to maximize the collective impact of the respective agencies.

In this case, the JTTF included investigators and analysts from, among other agencies, the FBI and the Department of Defense’s Defense Criminal Investigative Service (DCIS). Investigators on the JTTF reviewed certain communications between Major Hasan and the subject of that investigation and assessed that the content of those communications was consistent with research being conducted by Major Hasan in his position as a psychiatrist at the Walter Reed Medical Center. Because the content of the communications was explainable by his research and nothing else derogatory was found, the JTTF concluded that Major Hasan was not involved in terrorist activities or terrorist planning. Other communications that the FBI was aware of were similar to the ones reviewed by the JTTF.

Standard protocols—based on federal law, regulations, and policy, including the Privacy and Freedom of Information Acts—govern information handling in federal task force settings, including JTTFs. JTTF-generated information may only be disseminated outside the structure of the JTTF (including to a member’s home agency) with the approval of the JTTF FBI supervisor. In this case, following the review and analysis conducted by investigators, there was a conclusion made by the investigator and the supervisor that Major Hasan was not involved in terrorist activities or planning. Further dissemination of the information regarding Major Hasan was neither sought nor authorized.

Our top priority is to ensure that the person responsible for the Fort Hood shooting is held accountable. The ongoing investigation includes forensic examinations of Major Hasan’s computers and any Internet activity in hopes of gaining insight into his motivation. But the investigation to date indicates that the alleged gunman acted alone and was not part of a broader terrorist plot.

After meeting with the President, FBI Director Robert Mueller ordered a review of this matter to determine all of the facts and circumstances related to this tragedy and whether, with the benefit of hindsight, any policies or practices should change based on what we learn.

Again, this is a joint, ongoing criminal investigation that continues to move forward on many fronts. There is still much to learn. As a pending criminal case, the government remains limited in what information can be disclosed publicly about a U.S. citizen under investigation. As with any criminal investigation, all suspects are presumed innocent unless and until they are proven guilty of a crime in a court of law.

OPINION:

I’ll have to respectfully disagree just a tad bit.

It’s political correctness that opened the door for creeping sharia to enter.

It’s political correctness that allows creeping sharia to keep on creeping in.

Hood, Nation Pay Tribute to Victims of Post Shooting Spree

By Andrew Evans
American Forces Press Service

FORT HOOD, Texas, Nov. 11, 2009 – The mournful and all too familiar scene of a bugler playing Taps occurred again here Tuesday as the Fort Hood community paid its respects to fallen warriors struck down last week allegedly at the hands of a lone gunman, who also happened to wear an Army uniform.

“No words can ever express our sadness,” Lt. Gen. Robert Cone, III Corps and Fort Hood commanding general said before President Barack Obama took the stage.

“We can never accept the loss of soldiers at home,” Cone added. “Our Army family shares in the loss of your loved ones.”

The general also praised the courage of the soldiers who disregarded their own safety to render aid to others at the scene.

Prior to his public address, the president spoke with many of the survivors and the families of the fallen. Speaking to an estimated 15,000 people at the memorial, Obama vowed that justice will be done in the attack that left 13 dead and 43 wounded.

“No faith justifies these murderous and craven acts,” Obama said, noting that Soldiers who responded to the attack “remind us of who we are as Americans.”

Although the president told the families that “no words can fill the void that has been left,” he added, “your loved ones endure through the life of our nation.

“Their life’s work is our security and the freedom that we too often take for granted. Every evening that the sun sets on a tranquil town; every dawn that a flag is unfurled; every moment that an American enjoys life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness – that is their legacy,” the president said.

The Fort Hood community has suffered 545 soldiers killed in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, Cone said, “but never did we expect to pay such a high price at home.”

The Army Chief of Staff, Gen. George Casey, added, “Grieve with us. Don’t grieve for us.

“Those who have fallen did so in the service of their country,” he said. “They freely answered the call to serve, and they gave their lives for something that they loved and believed in.”

The fallen came from 11 different states and from all walks of life to answer the call of service, Cone said, emphasizing their diversity. The deadly incident will motivate Soldiers to renew their resolve and commitment of the military and to win the nation’s wars, the general said.

“May our continued service be a tribute to them,” Cone said.

Like generations before them, President Obama said this generation of servicemembers has paid the price for freedom.

“Their life’s work is our security and the freedom that we too often take for granted. Every evening that the sun sets on a tranquil town; every dawn that a flag is unfurled; every moment that an American enjoys life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness – that is their legacy.”

At the conclusion of the memorial ceremony, Obama and first lady Michelle Obama laid a presidential coin before each of the 13 battlefield crosses – the helmet, boots and rifle representing each of those killed – before family members and comrades filed past.

He inentionally took his life (suicide) for a noble cause i.e. saving the lives of his soldier. To say that this soldier committed suicide is inappropriate. Its more appropriate to say he is a brave hero that sacrificed his life for a more noble cause. Scholars have paralled this to suicide bombers whose intention, by sacrificing their lives, is to help save Muslims by killing enemy soldiers. If one suicide bomber can kill 100 enemy soldiers because they were caught off guard that would be considered a strategic victory. Their intention is not to die because of some despair. The same can be said for the Kamikazees in Japan. They died (via crashing their planes into ships) to kill the enemies for the homeland. You can call them crazy i you want but their act was not one of suicide that is despised by Islam. So the scholars main point is that "IT SEEMS AS THOUGH YOUR INTENTION IS THE MAIN ISSUE" and Allah (SWT) knows best. 05/20/2009"

Hasan Charged with 13 Counts of Murder

By Jim Garamone
American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON, Nov. 12, 2009 – Army Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan has been charged with 13 specifications of premeditated murder in the Nov. 5 attack at Fort Hood, Texas.
Hasan has been charged under Article 118 of the Uniform Code of Military Justice, meaning the case will be heard in the military system.

“These are initial charges, and additional charges may be preferred in the future, subject to the ongoing criminal investigation,” said Chris Grey, spokesman for U.S. Army Criminal Investigation Division, during a news conference at Fort Hood today.

“Our investigation remains open and ongoing,” Grey said. “We are doing everything possible, and we are looking at every reason for this shooting. We are aggressively following every possible lead.”

Preferring charges is the first step in the process. “A charge is merely an accusation,” Grey said. “The accused is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.”

Hasan has hired a lawyer. Under Article 118, the minimum sentence if he’s convicted is life with the possibility of parole. The maximum sentence is death.

Life at the sprawling installation is returning to normal, and the mission of the post continues, said Army Col. John Rossi, a Fort Hood spokesman. Twelve gunshot victims remain in local hospitals, with one in the intensive care unit. All are in stable condition, the colonel said.

Experts in psychological trauma continue to deploy to the base. More than 100 behavioral health specialists have deployed to help with assessments and assist across the command. Critical-incident stress management teams, unit ministry teams, health specialists and family life consultants are among those who have deployed to the central Texas post.

“Collectively, they have made more than 3,000 individual contacts so far,” Rossi said. “All of the wounded have received the critical incident stress de-brief, and all those at the scene are receiving the same de-brief.

“Our goal is all that require, or desire, help get it,” he continued. “We are guarding against any premature determination that all is OK.”

Unit commanders and leaders are actively engaged in the recovery process, the colonel said.

“As part of our healing process, Fort Hood continues to responsibly and respectfully resume normal activities,” Rossi said. “Our security posture remains vigilant, and our Fort Hood home is a great place to remain safe and secure. Units are returning from deployments as other units continue to train. The soldier readiness processing center is re-established and is operational at this time.”

“CONTENT VS CONTEXT”

SNIPPET: “Allow me to try and explain this by analogy:

If I’m a regular customer at a bar, that’s one thing. Maybe I have a drinking problem, or maybe I just don’t want to drink alone.

If, on the other hand, you see me regularly entering a bar, and the bar is owned by a guy who is affiliated with an organized crime family, and the bartender is dealing in meth amphetamine, the bus boys are selling crack cocaine, and one of the cocktail waitresses has a good connection for heroin - and you see me entering that bar because you have it under surveillance - don’t you think it’s a good idea to find out who the f*ck I am and why the f*ck I’m spending my time at that bar? What else am I up to, and with whom?”

“EXCLUSIVE: Fort Hood suspect contacted Muslim extremists
Contacts already being watched by FBI”

By Ben Conery and Victor Morton and Jerry Seper
(November 12, 2009)

SNIPPET: “Fort Hood shooting suspect Army Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan had been in contact with numerous Muslim extremists — some of whom are under federal investigation — before last week’s rampage, two U.S. officials told The Washington Times on Wednesday.

Maj. Hasan made some of the contacts while visiting known jihadist chat rooms on the Internet, according to one of The Times’ sources, a senior FBI official. He said that several people with whom Maj. Hasan was in contact had been the focus of investigations by the FBI-led Joint Terrorism Task Force.

The other source, a military intelligence official, said those in contact with Maj. Hasan are located both in the U.S. and overseas. The official said they are “broadly known and characterized as Islamic extremists if not necessarily al Qaeda.””

Gatesville Citizens Embrace Reservists Affected by Shooting

By U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Tony M. Lindback
Special to American Forces Press Service

GATESVILLE, Texas, Nov. 12, 2009 – The citizens of the “Spur Capital of Texas” here opened their arms and hearts to Army Reserve soldiers affected by the Nov. 5 Fort Hood shooting by hosting them for dinner at a local restaurant Nov. 8.

“It is absolutely wonderful to see all these folks together and to show our appreciation for what they do daily,” said Carla Manning, a military affairs representative for the Gatesville Chamber of Commerce. “They sacrifice daily, and they’ve been through some rough days recently.”

The soldiers are assigned to the 1908th and 467th Medical Detachments, reserve units from Kansas and Wisconsin respectively, but include soldiers from other states as well. Members of the two detachments have been preparing at Fort Hood, Texas, for deployments. Together, the units have fewer than 70 members, and of those five were fatally shot and 25 were injured when a lone gunman opened fire Nov. 5 at the Soldier Readiness Processing Center on Fort Hood. Eight of the wounded soldiers remained hospitalized the night of the dinner.

“Most of the time you see loss on the battlefield,” said Spc. Thomas Vecera, a mental health specialist with the 467th Medical Detachment. “This incident just took everyone by surprise, but we were still able to pull together and be strong. (The dinner is) exactly what the soldiers needed. Getting out like this is great. The community is great.”

Gatesville Chamber of Commerce president Gail Shelton said the Army, is a very important and worthy partner with her community, which has a population of about 15,000 and is located just outside the North Fort Hood gate.

“Everybody has wanted to chip in in this community in any way to help these soldiers in their time of need,” Shelton said.

Gatesville hosted the soldiers at the Prima Pasta restaurant, which is owned by Jashar Hoti. “I don’t think we could ever do enough for the Soldiers, compared to the sacrifices they make for us and our country,” he said.

The meal provided a semblance of home to soldiers away from their loved ones, said Staff Sgt. Nicolle Brossard, a mental health specialist with the 467th Medical Detachment.

“I feel that few people genuinely get to experience (the love that has been given to us) in their lifetimes,” Brossard said.

“To have an outpouring from a community that cares for us … in this tragic incident … is just phenomenal. I am so appreciative for their kindness.”

(U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Tony M. Lindback is assigned to the 1st Army Division West Public Affairs office.)
