Twelve people have been killed and 31 wounded in a shooting spree at a Texas military base by what officials believe was possibly carried out by an Army officer.

The suspected gunman was identified by ABC News as Major Malik Nadal Hasan.

The shooter was killed and two other suspects, who are also soldiers, have been apprehended, Lt. Gen. Robert W. Cone said.

The gunman used two handguns, Cone said. He wasn't sure if the shooter reloaded the weapons during the attack.

(less info)
The BBC’s Gavin Lee interviews ‘Duane’ at the Islamic Community of Greater Killeen the day after the killings at Fort Hood.

Duane : I’m not going to condemn him for what he did. I don’t know why he did it. I will not, absolutely not, condemn him for what he had done though. If he had done it for selfish reasons I still will not condemn him. He’s my brother in the end. I will never condemn him.

Gavin Lee : There might be a lot of people shocked to hear you say that.

Duane: Well, that’s the way it is. I don’t speak for the community here but me personally I will not condemn him.

Gavin Lee : What are your thoughts towards those that were victims in this?

Duane : They were, in the end, they were troops who were going to Afghanistan and Iraq to kill Muslims. I honestly have no pity for them. It’s just like the majority of the people that will hear this, after five or six minutes they’ll be shocked, after that they’ll forget about them and go on their day.

BBC: Ft Hood mosque member defends shootings: “they were troops who were going to Afghanistan and Iraq to kill Muslims. I honestly have no pity for them.”
Thanks to DB in the comment section who directs us to this post, which features a BBC interview by Gavin Lee with a member of the Killeen, Texas mosque outside Ft Hood, the Islamic Community Center of Greater Killeen, where Malik Nidal Hasan was currently attending.

In the interview (the whole interview can be heard here), mosque member “Duane” not only refuses to condemn Hasan, but justifies their murder because “they were troops who were going to Afghanistan and Iraq to kill Muslims”.

Here’s the relevant portion of the interview:

“Fort Hood suspect’s religion was an issue, family says”
November 7, 2009 8:19 a.m. EST
“Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan is a U.S.-born citizen of Palestinian descent. He’s accused of killing 13 people.”

SNIPPET: “Hasan’s cousin said that despite the concerns over discrimination, a motive behind the shootings still was incomprehensible.

“If he had killed one or two, I could say that he was defending himself. I could say that there could have been a problem between two sides which led to the use of weapons. But for one to kill 13 people and injure more than 30, I personally don’t think that it was because someone was bothering him. There is a bigger reason that this happened and no ones knows it besides Nidal.”

Mohammad Hasan remembered his cousin’s trip to Jerusalem, 6 miles from Ramallah, 15 years ago to learn about his roots. “He acted normal.”

More recently, Nidal Hasan may have attended a lecture in January at George Washington University involving the Israeli ambassador to the United States and other officials discussing Israel’s offensive into Gaza last winter. Video from the lecture shows a person who appears to be Hasan dressed in military fatigues seated in the audience taking notes.”

“Fort Hood shooting: Texas army killer linked to September 11 terrorists”

SNIPPET: “Major Nidal Malik Hasan worshipped at a mosque led by a radical imam said to be a “spiritual adviser” to three of the hijackers who attacked America on Sept 11, 2001.”

By Philip Sherwell and Alex Spillius
Published: 8:17PM GMT 07 Nov 2009

SNIPPET: Hasan, the sole suspect in the massacre of 13 fellow US soldiers in Texas, attended the controversial Dar al-Hijrah mosque in Great Falls, Virginia, in 2001 at the same time as two of the September 11 terrorists, The Sunday Telegraph has learnt. His mother’s funeral was held there in May that year.

The preacher at the time was Anwar al-Awlaki, an American-born Yemeni scholar who was banned from addressing a meeting in London by video link in August because he is accused of supporting attacks on British troops and backing terrorist organisations.”

SNIPPET: “Hasan’s eyes “lit up” when he mentioned his deep respect for al-Awlaki’s teachings, according to a fellow Muslim officer at the Fort Hood base in Texas, the scene of Thursday’s horrific shooting spree.

As investigators look at Hasan’s motives and mindset, his attendance at the mosque could be an important piece of the jigsaw. Al-Awlaki moved to Dar al-Hijrah as imam in January, 2001, from the west coast, and three months later the September 11 hijackers Nawaf al-Hamzi and Hani Hanjour began attending his services. A third hijacker attended his services in California.

Hasan was praying at Dar al-Hijrah at about the same time, and the FBI will now want to investigate whether he met the two terrorists.

Charles Allen, a former under-secretary for intelligence at the Department of Homeland Security, has described al-Awlaki, who now lives in Yemen, as an “al-Qaeda supporter, and former spiritual leader to three of the September 11 hijackers... who targets US Muslims with radical online lectures encouraging terrorist attacks from his new home in Yemen”.”

You were right! He is a wahhabist. The word is out today that he attended the same Wahhabi mosque in N. Virginia as the 9-11 murderers.

You are very perceptive!

“Muslim Population in the Military Raises Difficult Issues
Saturday, November 07, 2009
THE WALL STREET JOURNAL
By Yochi J. Dreazen

SNIPPET: “The deadly rampage at Fort Hood is forcing Pentagon officials to confront difficult questions about the military’s growing Muslim population.

The military has worked hard to recruit more Muslims since the start of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and the number of Muslim troops, while still small, has been increasing. There were 3,409 Muslims in the active-duty military as of April 2008, according to Pentagon statistics.

SLIDESHOW: Deadly Fort Hood Rampage

Military personnel don’t have to disclose their religions, and many officials believe the actual number of Muslim soldiers may be at least 10,000 higher than the Pentagon statistics. For instance, the military “Officer Record Brief” of Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan, the suspect in the Fort Hood shootings, said he had “no religious preference” and didn’t identify him as a Muslim.”

Obama: ‘We cannot fully know’ motive of Ft. Hood shooter
Washington Examiner ^ | 11/7/09 | Byron York
Posted on November 7, 2009 8:05:16 PM PST by Nachum

President Obama says “we cannot fully know” what led Army Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan to kill 13 people and wound 38 others at Fort Hood, Texas Thursday.

Hasan reportedly shouted “Allahu Akbar!” before the killings, wrote Internet postings justifying Muslim suicide bombings, considered U.S. forces the enemy, and opposed American involvement in Iraq and Afghanistan as wars on Islam. His rampage at Ft. Hood has the markings of an act of Islamic terrorism.

But in his weekly address, Obama says, “We cannot fully know what leads a man to do such a thing.” And while the killings were “heartbreaking” and “despicable” and “devastating,” the president says, it is important to remember not only that Hasan’s fellow soldiers responded bravely in coming to the aid of the wounded but also that “Americans of every race, faith and station” have served in the U.S. armed forces. “They are Christians and Muslims, Jews and Hindus and nonbelievers,” Obama says. “They reflect the diversity that makes this America.”

OCTOBER 10, 2002 THU : (NY : JFK AIRPORT : MUSLIM CLERIC ANWAR NASSER AULAQI aka AL-AWLAKI IS DETAINED & RELEASED A FEW HOURS LATER — See SAN DIEGO CELL, FALLS CHURCH CELL, VA JIHAD/PAINTBALL CELL, OPERATION GREENQUEST) WASHINGTON – A Muslim cleric who had closed-door meetings with two of the 9-11 hijackers was detained last October [2002] at a New York airport after federal authorities identified him as the subject of a post-9-11 terror money-laundering investigation, according to a U.S. Customs incident report obtained exclusively by WorldNetDaily.

But the cleric, Anwar Nasser Aulaqi, was released soon after being taken into custody, the report shows, and allowed to catch a connecting flight here [to Wash DC], where he’d headed a large suburban mosque [Dar al-Hijrah Islamic Center in Falls Church, Va] attended by two of the hijackers who helped crash an American Airlines jetliner into the Pentagon. He has since returned to Yemen, where he was born. ...[the cleric, Anwar Nasser] Aulaqi, along with his family, arrived Oct. 10 [2002] at JFK International Airport on Saudi Arabian Airlines. After Customs agents identified him as a match in their anti-terrorist lookout database, they searched his bags and escorted him to a detention area. They notified the FBI, and the FBI informed them that “the warrant issued by the State Department had been pulled back” on the previous day, Oct. 9, according to the incident log. Aulaqi and his family were then released after more than three hours in custody. “Passengers released with thanks for their patience, and given the comment card,” the log states. They were handed off to a Saudi Arabian Airlines representative “in order to continue with their flight to Washington, D.C.”

It’s not immediately clear why the warrant had been removed. Phone calls to the FBI and State were not returned. ———— “D.C. “Malik Hasan Tied to 9/11 Hijackers, Radical al Qaeda Preacher”

SNIPPET: “Shocking headline? Well, it’s true. As first reported at the Jawa, Hasan attended the radical Saudi funded mosque in Virginia who’s now oft quoted and shocked-and-horrified imam is also a big supporter of the ISNA.

What we didn’t know was that Hasan attended that mosque at the same time as two of the 9/11 hijackers — Nawaf al-Hamzi and Hani Hanjour.

Did Nidal Hasan know them? Maybe, maybe not.

But the most disturbing part is that the imam of the mosque at the time was Anwar al-Awlaki (pictured right). Awlaki is an American who now lives in exile in Yemen where his website incites Muslims to jihad and who has nothing but praise for al Qaeda.

Awlaki is hands down the most cited English language preacher in the underworld of online jihad.

And what was Hasan’s view of al-Awlaki?

Hasan’s eyes “lit up” when he mentioned his deep respect for al-Awlaki’s teachings, according to a fellow Muslim officer at the Fort Hood base in Texas, the scene of Thursday’s horrific shooting spree.
Any one who knows anything about al-Awlaki knows he is as radical as they come.
A deeper terrorist plot? No indication of that. But those who continue to claim that the attack had nothing to do with a broader goal of jihad really have nothing left to stand on.

Again, let me remind the simple minded that like most human behavior murder is often motivated by many things. Sure, Hasan very well could have been distressed over an impending deployment and perhaps that deployment was a proximate cause. He may also have been bat shit crazy.

However it is also clear that he held the same world view as the vast majority of Islamist terrorists and that this was at least one of his motivations.”

SNIPPET: “Awlaki’s name has come up recently in connection with the Toronto 18 terror case.”

“The powerful online voice of jihad
Shadowy cleric revered by disenchanted Muslim youths throughout West cited in Toronto 18 case”

By Michelle Shephard
National Security Reporter
Published On Sun Oct 18 2009

SNIPPET: “In a snowy field near Barrie, a group of young Muslim men listened intently to the eloquent voice emanating from the laptop.

Anwar al Awlaki preached in perfect Arabic and flawless English about the need to fight in the name of religion, because the “world is united in fighting Islam.”

The time for jihad is now, no matter your training, he told members of the group that would later become known as the Toronto 18. Six months following that “training camp,” those youths were rounded up in Canada’s largest post-9/11 terrorism investigation and charged with plotting to blow up downtown Toronto and military targets.

Zakaria Amara, the leader of that group, entered a surprise guilty plea earlier this month. A date for his sentencing is to be set on Tuesday.

Awlaki’s role in allegedly inciting “homegrown terrorism” was just a footnote in the volumes of evidence submitted in the Toronto case.

But in recent months, as Awlaki’s name has popped up in terrorism cases in Canada, the U.S. and Britain, intelligence services are closely monitoring the U.S.-born cleric.

“Awlaki is an exceptionally smart person,” says FBI consultant and terrorism researcher Evan Kohlmann, who has studied the 38-year-old for years. “He has the strongest statements of any English-language site.””

“Former Magic Valley man among Fort Hood shooting victims”

By John Plestina - Times-News writer | Posted: Sunday, November 8, 2009 1:55 am

SNIPPET: “A man who grew up in Jerome was the first victim shot in Thursday’s Fort Hood shooting rampage that left 13 dead and 38 injured.

Army Staff Sgt. Shawn Manning, 33, survived six gunshot wounds when the shooter, Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan, an Army psychiatrist, entered the Soldier Readiness Center at the military post near Killeen, Texas, and fired more than 100 rounds with two handguns at soldiers undergoing medical screening in preparation for deployment to Afghanistan.”

SNIPPET: “Lott said Manning is a mental health professional but he did not know the shooter.

Manning is a veteran of two tours of duty in Iraq. He joined the Army in 2000 and served in Iraq in 2003 and 2006.

“He had been called back to active duty in October and was preparing for a third deployment,” Lott said.
She said Saturday afternoon that her brother was in stable condition in a Texas hospital.

Lott said her family appreciates all of the thoughts and support from the community.

The only other victim of the shooting spree with known Idaho ties is George Stratton III, 18, of Post Falls, who was reported to have sustained a shoulder wound.”
