Pro-Life Advocates Win Big on Election Night With Virginia, New Jersey Victories

Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- The 2009 off-year elections yielded big victories for the pro-life movement with significant wins in both Virginia and New Jersey. The Virginia election saw pro-life advocates carry each of the three major offices and New jersey will have a pro-life governor for the first time in recent memory.

In Virginia, pro-life former Attorney general Bob McDonnell defeated pro-abortion candidate Creigh Deeds by a landslide 59-41 percent margin.

Poll consistently showed McDonnell leading Deeds even though Deeds attacked the pro-life advocate on abortion consistently throughout the campaign. The Virginia Society for Human Life PAC endorsed McDonnell, who would be a welcome change from recent pro-abortion governors, the group says.

Meanwhile, pro-life state senator Ken Cuccinelli won the race for state Attorney General while pro-life incumbent Lt. Governor Bill Bolling held on to his seat. Both candidates defeated abortion advocates and won the election with double digit margins.

In New Jersey, the New Jersey Right to Life and National Right to Life PACs, along with pro-life leaders like Rep. Chris Smith were behind Chris Christie as he took on pro-abortion incumbent Gov. Jon Corzine.

With 99 percent of the precincts totaled, Christe appears to have won with a 49 to 45 percent victory margin and just 6 percent backing pro-abortion independent candidate Christopher Daggett

Marie Tasy of New Jersey Right to Life told LifeNews.com before the election that "Corzine has repeatedly padded the pockets of abortion giant, Planned Parenthood with his own money, and has done so every year in the state budget with our tax dollars as well. Just this year, he allocated $7.5 million in the FY 2010 state budget to them."

"If Corzine gets re-elected, he said he will push through another clone and kill embryonic stem cell referendum even though voters resoundingly rejected such a measure two years ago," Tasy added. "There is only one choice for pro-life voters and that choice is Chris Christie."

The pro-life choice in New York is Conservative Party candidate Doug Hoffman and he trails pro-abortion Democrat Bill Owens 49-45 percent with 85 percent of the precincts reporting.

The the GOP candidate, Dede Scozzafava, was pro-abortion and because of the small number of elections and the national focus on Congress given the health care debate, LifeNews.com and pro-life advocates brought attention to Scozzafava's pro-abortion position and support for Hoffman.

That led Scozzafava to withdraw from the race over the weekend but she endorsed Owens and still picked up 6 percent of the vote because her name was still on the ballot -- which appears to have essentially given the election to Owens.

Whoopie.

Seriously. Christie will for all practical purposes be as pro-life as Whitman.

If Christie is pro-life I’m the King of England.

Ertelt and National Right to Life once again providing cover for phonies notwithstanding.

Let's not be ridiculous here.

Chris Christie was hardly a "pro-life" candidate for governor of New Jersey.

There isn't anything in New Jersey in terms of the pro-life movement that's going to change for the better under his administration.

That remains to be seen. Christie Whitman ran unapologetically as a pro-abortion Republican. Christie, on the other hand, is at least marginally pro-life, if not as vocal on the issue as one would like. He also HAS YOUNG KIDS which is a pretty good indicator of where he may stand.

I have hope for the man, myself.

Well, I guess that makes Barack Obama pro-life, then.

Westchester County (NY), land of secular limo liberal suburbanites, just elected a pro-life Republican County Executive.

I didn’t realize Christie was pro-life! They said “moderate Republican” which is usually code for “pro-choice.” I didn’t think this was possible in New Jersey!

Step-by-step-by-step, we are moving forward!

CHRISTIE’S STORY ON ABORTION KEEPS ON CHANGING
By Press Office

For Immediate Release: Monday, May 25, 2009
— Pro-Life, Pro-Choice or Multiple Choice??

FARMINGDALE — “Pro-Life, Pro-Choice or Multiple Choice” asks conservative Gubernatorial candidate Steve Lonegan about Chris Christie’s ever changing position on abortion.

Lonegan’s questions arose after the Associated Press reported discrepancies about when, exactly, Christie’s claimed switch on the Life issue occurred.

Christie told the Associated Press that his view on abortion changed in 1995 upon “hearing the heartbeat of his unborn daughter 14 years ago.”

But a July 1996 Bergen Record article — a year after Christie claimed his position on abortion had changed — has Christie calling himself “pro-choice.”

Referring to a resolution “banning” Partial-Birth Abortions in Morris County, Christie told the Record “I’m pro-choice.”

Christie now says he may have been misquoted.

“No one believes that for a minute,” Lonegan told supporters gathered for a parade in Farmingdale. “Chris Christie’s position on abortion is the same as its always been. He supports Roe v. Wade as the ‘law of the land’ and would ‘enforce’ it as Governor,” Lonegan added. “As Governor, he will continue untouched the pro-abortion policies of our state and do nothing to save the unborn,” that’s just one more difference between Chris and myself.

“Chris Christie’s called himself pro-Life. He’s called himself pro-Choice. But all he is on Life is Multiple Choice. And that’s true for just about every other issue as well,” Lonegan told supporters.

I think you are sadly mistaken -- there was a lot going on in NJ for pro-life. Guess you never tapped into any of these threads! Just think -- all these people voted who had been praying vote for the conservative candidate, because they know that the dimocrats are FOR ABORTION!

Back in the late 1990’s, Christie ran in a republican primary AGAINST a pro-life candidate. While a legislative candidate he ran a PRO-ABORTION platform including partial-birth abortion, gay marriage and anti-2nd amendment.

This year, Christie ran against a pro-life candidate, Steve lonegan, for governor. The only difference is that this time Christie “said” he was pro-life.

Only time will tell by his “actions”. I wonder if he will ever speak up for the unborn and “ACTIVELY” advocate, push for and back the pro-life cause.

Many legislators in Trenton “say” they are pro-life and do nothing for the cause “actively”. You don’t hear a peep out of them when problems arise, you don’t see many of them SPONSOR and CO-SPONSOR pro-life legislation. Sure, at the end when it’s time to vote, they may vote pro life (and I thank them for their vote for life) but that’s after all the hard and dirty work was done.

Were they out in the forefront, creating the bill, sponsoring the bill, co-sponsoring the bill, arguing for the bill in committee, enlisting the voters of the state to get involved? Sadly, the answer for many is No. As a matter of fact, those legislators never even sought the pro-life vote in their districts. They didn’t want to rock the boat and face not getting elected.

Time will tell, I hope the election will be a propitious occasion for the pro-live movement.

The only difference is that this time Christie “said” he was pro-life.

So New Jersey elected a guy who says he is pro-life. That's, at least, some progress right there.

It’s true that time will tell, but the suspicion may be quite thorughly unjusified. If I had gone into politics instead of the military 20 years ago, I might be running for governor as a pro-lifer today and having people talk smack about me because I was a pro-choicer in an early campaign or two.

This is an issue where, more than any other, people change their minds, change them in only one direction and change them quite profoundly.

I agree, Reagan changed positions and proved he was pro-life by his many speeches for the cause and his actions as president.

Let's hope Christie does the same.

I bet he says NOTHING about life at his inaugural speech in January. I will be taping it. Will he start off with a bang or a dud.
