How Can Glenn Beck Be Right on So Much and Yet Still Believe the book of Mormon? (serious question)

Posted on 10/26/2009 7:51:02 AM PDT by Scythian

I'm a huge Beck fan, in fact I'm listening right now here

http://www.ksfa860.com/common/gap_streamer.php

but something really confuses me. It takes the ability to use real critical thinking to know what Beck (and most of us know about the state of the country and where we are heading). That is, we have the ability to discover the truth no matter how much the media or conventional wisdom try to hide it. Yet on Mormonism, Beck is cleary wrong. Any Christian knows that the book or momonism is severely flawed and that Joseph Smith was no prophet. How can Beck cut through all the chaff of what is going on in our world and come to the truth and yet believe the writings of Joseph Smith? It doesn't make sense? I'm not saying he's up to something secret, not by any means, it's just that he's so right about so many things and completely wrong on the most important thing. Now, he just said on the air that he believes Jesus is the Savior of the world and that he is Mormon.

I also think that because he is Mormon he is not attacked near as much if he was a Evangelical Bible only believer. Anyway, am I nutz or does Beck being a Mormon seem bizarre?

Don’t misunderstand me. I am not promoting Catholocism over any other denomination. Both historical and biblical references establish the church of Rome, eventually known as the Holy Roman Catholic Church as the origin of Christianity as an established religion. Other denominations are divergent from it for one reason or another. Pick a denomination, Babtist, Lutheran, Methodist, Anglican, etc. they all have elements of their belief systems that vary in some degree from the church of Rome. Since they involve beliefs I am not going to say they are right or wrong. It is wrong for a member of one divergent denomination to make the statement that “Any Chrstian knows” about the basic tenets of another Christian faith. The very history and divergence of Christianity belies such a defining statement.

correct

why does anyone have a problem with another persons religion providing they are not forcing it onto me is beyond me.

I am curious about how a poster says that the mormon religion is wrong because they said they are the true religion or words to that effect.

Well do they also feel the same about Jews who have said they are the true religion or catholics, Baptists etc.

Where one person thinks they are the true religion another thinks they have the true religion.

Beck has never forced his faith on to his viewers and said hey you’re wrong you must convert.
So I really do not see why some would have a problem with his faith.

Mormons helped us to defeat the homosexuals in CA, isn’t that something which we should be together on and not still have this infighting?
The left wants us to attack Beck over his faith and sadly some have fallen for it in my view.
Elsie, you made a very good post

Many would argue that the Catholic Church diverged from Biblical teachings and that the Reformation brought Christianity back into line with the Bible.
But, since this is not a religion thread, I’ll leave it at that. Not trying to change your mind, but I honestly thought the same thing you do at one time.

THE
DOCTRINE AND COVENANTS
OF THE CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST OF LATTER-DAY SAINTS
SECTION 89
Revelation given through Joseph Smith the Prophet, at Kirtland, Ohio, February 27, 1833. HC 1: 327–329. As a consequence of the early brethren using tobacco in their meetings, the Prophet was led to ponder upon the matter; consequently he inquired of the Lord concerning it. This revelation, known as the Word of Wisdom, was the result. The first three verses were originally written as an inspired introduction and description by the Prophet.

1–9, Use of wine, strong drinks, tobacco, and hot drinks proscribed; 10–17, Herbs, fruits, flesh, and grain are ordained for the use of man and of animals; 18–21, Obedience to gospel law, including the Word of Wisdom, brings temporal and spiritual blessings.

1 A aWord OF Wisdom, for the benefit of the council of high priests, assembled in Kirtland, and the church, and also the saints in Zion—
2 To be sent greeting; not by commandment or constraint, but by revelation and the aword of wisdom, showing forth the order and bwill of God in the temporal salvation of all saints in the last days—
3 Given for a principle with apromise, adapted to the capacity of the bweak and the weakest of all csaints, who are or can be called saints.
4 Behold, verily, thus saith the Lord unto you: In consequence of aevils and designs which do and will exist in the hearts of bconspiring men in the last days, I have cwarned you, and forewarn you, by giving unto you this word of wisdom by revelation—
5 That inasmuch as any man adrinketh bwine or strong drink among you, behold it is not good, neither meet in the sight of your Father, only in assembling yourselves together to offer up your sacraments before him.
6 And, behold, this should be wine, yea, apure wine of the grape of the vine, of your own make.
7 And, again, astrong drinks are not for the belly, but for the washing of your bodies.
8 And again, tobacco is not for the abody, neither for the belly, and is not good for man, but is an herb for bruises and all sick cattle, to be used with judgment and skill.
9 And again, hot drinks are not for the body or belly.
10 And again, verily I say unto you, all wholesome aherbs God hath ordained for the constitution, nature, and use of man—
11 Every herb in the season thereof, and every fruit in the season thereof; all these to be used with aprudence and bthanksgiving.
  12 Yea, aflesh also of bbeasts and of the fowls of the air, I, the Lord, have ordained for the use of man with thanksgiving; nevertheless they are to be used csparingly;
13 And it is pleasing unto me that they should not be aused, only in times of winter, or of cold, or bfamine.
  14 All agrain is ordained for the use of man and of beasts, to be the staff of life, not only for man but for the beasts of the field, and the fowls of heaven, and all wild animals that run or creep on the earth;
15 And athese hath God made for the use of man only in times of famine and excess of hunger.
16 All grain is good for the afood of man; as also the bfruit of the vine; that which yieldeth fruit, whether in the ground or above the ground—
17 Nevertheless, wheat for man, and corn for the ox, and oats for the horse, and rye for the fowls and for swine, and for all beasts of the field, and barley for all useful animals, and for mild drinks, as also other grain.
  18 And all saints who remember to keep and do these sayings, walking in obedience to the commandments, ashall receive bhealth in their navel and marrow to their bones;
  19 And shall afind bwisdom and great ctreasures of dknowledge, even hidden treasures;
20 And shall arun and not be bweary, and shall walk and not faint.
21 And I, the Lord, give unto them a promise, that the adestroying angel shall bpass by them, as the children of Israel, and not slay them. Amen.

Name one thing you have done to promote conservative ideals in the past week.

MORMON
ATTITUDES OF SUPERIORITY

  1. I’m Superior; I have a special gift of the holy Ghost -- you don’t!
  2. I’m Superior; I have God’s true priesthood power -- you don’t!
  3. I’m Superior; I can go in God’s secret Temple -- you can’t!
  4. I’m Superior; I’ve been Endowed with special Gifts and Knowledge -- you’re just normal!
  5. I’m Superior; I’ll have my family with me in heaven -- you’ll be with strangers!
  6. I’m Superior; I’m becoming a God -- you aren’t!
  7. I’m Superior; My women know their place as servants of man and yours don’t.
  8. I’m Superior; YOUR creeds are wrong because they come from man - mine comes from God (you can find each one printed in our Scriptures).
  9. I’m Superior; I don’t HAVE a creed - I’ve got 13 Articles of Faith.
10. I'm Superior; I have 4 "Bibles"-- the standard works (5 if you count the JST) -- you've only got one: in as far as it is translated correctly.
11. I’m Superior; I can lie with impunity about such things as church membership, church growth, church doctrine, church history, church influence, etc. —                           -- You can’t.
12. I’m Superior; I am right (everybody knows) when I say 'evangelical' Christians are lunatics --                            -- You’re a hideous narrow-minded bigot, who is persecuting me by practicing discrimination by saying I'm not a Christian.
13. I'm Superior; I have a testimony about a prophet -- you don't.
14. I'm Superior; I have a Scripture-producing Amos 3:7 prophet -- you don't
15. I’m Superior; I have a Living Prophet who talks to god every day -- you have a dim-witted hireling of Satan who only talks to himself.
16. I'm Superior; I have my calling & election made sure -- you don't.
17. I’m Superior; I have magic underwear to protect me from the bogey man -- you don’t.
18. I’m Superior; I have secret clasps and grips to give the angel so I get admitted to the celestial kingdom -- you don’t ;so you can’t.
19. I'm Superior; I know secret handshake codes for afterlife entrances-- you don't.
20. I’m Superior; I will see Joseph Smith setting on the right hand of GOD, when I get to Mormon heaven, and he will recognize me and judge me favorably                              -- You’re on your own; when you get to wherever you’re going!
21. I’m Superior; I’m going to hie to Kolob -- you’re going to who knows where.
22. I’m Superior; I get to have a harem and act like a celestial stud for time and all eternity -- you don’t.
23. I’m Superior; I have sun stones, moon stones, sky stones, cloud stones, Saturn stones, and the evil eye of Osirus guarding my temple                            -- all you have is a stupid cross.
24. I’m Superior; My church has billions in assets stashed away -- yours has taken a stupid vow of poverty.
25. I'm Superior; Last - we have the power to keep a whole race out of our priesthood if we wanted to reinsert our 148-year legacy  (we ARE still keeping an entire GENDER at bay!)

Revision 46.1
Semi-Official creed of the EXclusive club of Freeper Flying Inmans.
All rights liable to be abused.

Why can't the RESTORED gospel be found in the Book of MORMON; like Salt Lake City SAYS that it can?

I said it. We had 150 people at the phone bank making calls. We found one Protestant, some Catholics and 90% LDS people. Not a problem for me to state the facts. Like I said, it is not their fault, they are not organized the way the Catholics and Mormons are. Even Rick Warren recanted his support for Prop 8. Protestants are not a coordinated group, they are local to their congregations. That is fine with me.

Perhaps you've seen the Lds bumper sticker, "Families are forever." (Lds get that from Joseph Smith's Doctrine & Covenants D&C 132 re: "eternal marriage.")

HOW?

They do not PRACTICE what 'god' said in D&C 132 and even go so far as to EXCOMMUNICATE those who DO!

Answer? Because truth doesn’t happen in a vaccuum (although dust mites do). If you talked to a Wican or even a Democrat you might find some grains of God’s wisdom tucked in. Glenn Beck was (by his own admission) one seriously messed up lost individual. When he needed rescued the Mormon Church was standing right there to offer him love and belonging and a way out.

I think the more pertinent question is, “Where were we, the Christians when Glenn Beck needed help?”.

(You’ve asked a great question, by the way... and yes, I’m willing to take a bashing from the Mormons on my answer)

If you DIDN'T intend for this thread to become a debate about the Book of Mormon, or Mormon doctrines, why did you post it?

It hasn't devolved to a "I Love Mitt!" thread yet...

While we don't know what it is, it must suggest that all Mormons are going to hell and his faith compels him to make sure everyone he happens upon also believes as he does.

John 6

28. Then they asked him, "What must we do to do the works God requires?"
29. Jesus answered,
"The work of God is this: to believe in the one he has sent."

Galatians 3

1. You foolish Galatians! Who has bewitched you? Before your very eyes Jesus Christ was clearly portrayed as crucified.
2. I would like to learn just one thing from you: Did you receive the Spirit by observing the law, or by believing what you heard?

br> I tend to see it in the reverse. On this thread he is being criticized simply because of his religious beliefs, which have nothing to do with the substance of his work. If you have a problem with him, find someone else to watch.

“Who are you to judge when we have a guaranteed freedom of religion?”

Uhh... also have a freedom of speech thrown in there. The Constitution doesn’t have a “freedom not to be judged” clause in it last time I read. It wasn’t many years ago that people had thicker skin. I can see we’re far, far away from that now. Glenn knows folks disagree with him and he has no problem throwing in his Mormon religious beliefs in his discourse whether they are in keeping with his listeners beliefs or not, nor should he!

By the same token, someone has a legitimate right to ask questions about this very public person in a public forum.

Or don’t you believe in free speech and freedom of religion?

Your only “accomplishment” is denigrating Mormons.

You may freely post any MORMON remarks as you wish to help them defend themselves against their own writings.
