THE WEEKLY STANDARD just received a statement from Sarah Palin endorsing conservative Doug Hoffman for Congress:

The people of the 23rd Congressional District of New York are ready to shake things up, and Doug Hoffman is coming on strong as Election Day approaches! He needs our help now.

The votes of every member of Congress affect every American, so it's important for all of us to pay attention to this important Congressional campaign in upstate New York. I am very pleased to announce my support for Doug Hoffman in his fight to be the next Representative from New York's 23rd Congressional district. It's my honor to endorse Doug and to do what I can to help him win, including having my political action committee, SarahPAC, donate to his campaign the maximum contribution allowed by law.

Our nation is at a crossroads, and this is once again a "time for choosing."

The federal government borrows, spends, and prints too much money, while our national debt hits a record high. Government is growing while the private sector is shrinking, and unemployment is on the rise. Doug Hoffman is committed to ending the reckless spending in Washington, D.C. and the massive increase in the size and scope of the federal government. Political parties must stand for something. When Republicans were in the wilderness in the late 1970s, Ronald Reagan knew that the doctrine of "blurring the lines" between parties was not an appropriate way to win elections. Unfortunately, the Republican Party today has decided to choose a candidate that more than blurs the lines, and there is no real difference between the Democrat and the Republican in this race. This is why Doug Hoffman is running on the Conservative Party's ticket.

I’m sure I’ll be hearing the same tired arguments I heard about Hunter again if he runs. The kind of arguments that led directly to a three headed stinking RINO being the frontrunner chosen by the media, and a cadaver actually winning the nomination.

Here's where you trend from "Wrong, but principled" toward "absolutely clueless."

Though I could rehash all sorts of things from 2008 and discuss exactly how we got to having the 3 RINOs followed by the cadaver, what you have missed completely is how we DIDN'T get there. We DIDN'T get there because conservatives chose to back RINOs instead of Hunter, and therefore he lost. It became clear very early that Hunter was NOT capable of running a national campaign, or even just a competent primary campaign in Iowa or New Hampshire with four years warning that there would be an open seat in the GOP.

A person who can run a competent campaign outside their district would not come in eighth in the Michigan primary behind "uncommitted."

We need a principled nominee, but that nominee needs to be able to win. Otherwise we're as dumb as an NFL team that hires a quarterback with a great throwing arm...and no legs.

Good to see you start early on this. Now for some facts.

Hunter was the first conservative to announce, and he did it largely because he saw the three headed RINO (Or as hunter called them, the “Kennedy Wing of the party”)was already being outfitted by the MSM and the RNC as the annointed ones.

Hunter fully expected to have a good chunk of the “conservative” media in his corner right out of the shoot. (Gee, you’d think they would have been elated). But no. Rush and Levin and Laura barely mentioned him and would not become involved until it was far too late and then they were forced to cheerlead for Romney over McCain - how embarrassing). Hannity immediately got out the kneepads for Rudy, Medved for Mccain, Hewitt & Nat. Review for Mitt, etc etc.

As for Iowa straw poll, Hunter was in the middle of writing the Defense Appropriations bill, and could not campaign more than a couple of days. (Remember, we were in 2 hot wars at the time).

So Hunter instead focused on the SC and AZ and TX straw polls. Where, BTW, he did exceedingly well. During several debates, Hunter got about 2-4 minutes to speak versus 10 to 12 minutes for the big three.

So there you have it. The conservative media, the MSM, and the debate moderators doing their damndest to ensure that the MSM chosen candidates would get the face time, the questions, the coverage, that would seal the deal. And a compliant GOP rank and file too stupid to know what was happening.

If Hunter runs again, he’ll know exactly what he must do to overcome the idiots, yes - idiots, that worked hard to guarantee us a RINO.

They call it a great victory if the D wins but are happy if the RA wins.

That's the OP way to look at her decision. The other interpretation is she's sending a message to the OP(formerly the GOP) that she may leave the OP and run as a Conservative.

I don't see this as sending any kind of message that she may run as a third party national candidate. She may indeed be sending a message, but it's not that she's leaving the GOP.  NY-23 is a totally different situation. There was no GOP primary for the 2009 NY-23 race, and Scozzafava was the beneficiary of some insider NY GOP maneuvering.  The only way for Hoffman, a conservative Republican, to run against this idiot GOP liberal was to run as an independent in the general election.  Scozz is not even remotely conservative, so NY-23's conservatives want another option.  Palin is supporting this: the message is that the GOP shouldn't take conservatives for granted and not run liberal candidates in districts where a conservative can win.  

This dynamic is unusual. It's a special election to finish out a two-year term.  If Hoffman wins the 3-way race, he will caucus with the House GOP and likely run as a Republican and Conservative nominee in 2010, with the advantage of incumbency in what is expected to be a strong year for the GOP.  If the dem wins in 2009, Hoffman can run in the GOP primary for 2010 and benefit from his raised profile from the 2009 race, and hopefully win in the 2010 general election.  If Scozz wins, he can run against her in the GOP primary in 2010 and see what happens.

Sarah is sending a message alright, she is saying "get back to basics, and to your conservative principles." I'm happy that she is supporting Hoffman. 

I'm absolutely sure that Sarah knows that in national elections third parties don't go anywhere, and in 2012 would likely benefit Obama.  If Sarah runs in 2012, she will run as a strong GOP conservative.  Like I said, NY23 is an unusual case and I hope Hoffman wins.

All they would do in that case is hardly mention the elections. They really won’t mean much in regard to 2010. Many of the Democrats in those voting districts probably have no idea there are elections on Nov. 3.

The similarity on the positions between the Scozzafava and Owens is one example how we don't have a two party system. Another party will restore the two party system.

Scozzafava reflects the attitude of OP(formerly GOP) party leaders that has been pervasive in the party for years.

Hoffman is not a "Conservative Republican"! He is a member of the Conservative party. Republicanism and Conservatism are two distinctly different ideologies.

This is mere speculation unless Doug Hoffman or his spokesperson told you this as fact. Any attempt by the OP to merge it's big tent, reach out across the aisle, in the spirit of bipartisanship mentality Conservatism will be quickly rebuffed by the Conservative party. The formation of a Conservative party and Hoffman's candidacy is a rejection of that mentality.

Again, what third party? The OP and the socialist RATs are increasingly becoming kindred spirits , as illustrated by Scozzofava's support by OP leadership and the Democrats.

Like I said, NY23 is an unusual case and I hope Hoffman wins.

Hoffman is not the exception to the rule. He is the next step of a growing grassroots movement to supplant the Republicrat party with Conservatism.
