Marx gets Vatican thumbs up

Amid the worst recession in generations, Karl Marx, who famously described religion as “the opium of the people”, got a thumbs up from the Vatican overturning a century of Catholic hostility to his creed.

Marx, who predicted that capitalism would be destroyed by its internal contradictions, has joined Galileo, Charles Darwin and Oscar Wilde on a growing list of historical figures to have undergone an unlikely reappraisal by the Roman Catholic Church, The Times newspaper said on Thursday.

The British daily, quoting the Vatican newspaper L’Osservatore Romano, said Marx’s early critiques of capitalism had highlighted the “social alienation” felt by the “large part of humanity” that remained excluded from economic and political decision-making.

Amid signs of recovery in global financial markets, Christian leaders have flayed the capitalist system for displaying a lack of moral values, arguing that ethical debates needs to be given greater prominence.

Georg Sans, a German-born professor of the history of contemporary philosophy at the pontifical Gregorian University, argues that Marx’s work remained especially relevant today as mankind was seeking “a new harmony” between its needs and the natural environment.

The report quoted Prof. Sans as saying that Marx’s theories may help to explain the enduring issue of income inequality within capitalist societies.

The priest I regularly confess to. It is written See John 20:21-23, for "what is written," right there in black and white, in the very words of Jesus.

The Heavenly Father already knows the sin(s), there is NO need to make a confession to another flesh being to have those sins forgiven IF an actual, literal change of heart takes place. And IT is only the Heavenly Father that can know the mind of the person confessing sin(s) are sincere in repentance.

But hey if reporting your sin(s) to some man behind a curtain is your tradition I am not about to try and change your mind.

Oh just in the event I need to add all is done in the name of the Savior.

When you're ready to stop telling Jesus how things ought to work and simply accept them the way he set them up, call us. We'll still be here.

"When you forgive mens' sins, they are forgiven them. When you hold them bound, they are held bound."

He knew what he was doing.

It is disturbing to note how often the anti-Catholic fetish seems to include a preoccupation with altar boys.

Creepy.

To think so is to think that person a god.

Exactly what humanists (see tagline) think of their elite elected officials. What's funny is that I was talking to someone that obviously had this faith and reverence for the leftist elected politicians, I asked her if she'd heard of Sheila Jackson Lee or Maxine Waters. Nope.

BTW, do you know who the first "humanist" was?

Oh, and don't forget James 5:16 ... "confess your sins to one another".

Follow the Scriptures.

I just got an fremail from somebody which I duplicate here without attribution:

The term ‘Hindu’ in ‘The Hindu’ newspaper does not refer to the religion. Please correct that.

“The Hindu is distinguished for its comprehensive coverage of national and international political news and for its emphasis on accuracy and balanced coverage. Although it is published in a provincial capital, The Hindu’s reportage and editorials are read carefully and taken seriously in the national capital. At the beginning of the 21st century, its daily circulation exceeded 900,000. The newspaper’s parent company, Hindu Group Publications, also publishes The Hindu Business Line, a daily business paper, and popular magazines such as Frontline and Sportstar.”

- Encyclopaedia Britannica.

That said:

“L’Osservatore Romano, the Vatican newspaper, said yesterday that Marx’s early critiques of capitalism had highlighted the “social alienation” felt by the “large part of humanity” that remained excluded, even now, from economic and political decision-making.”

[...] PS: Feel free to post this onto the main thread.

Let me "revise and extend my remarks": Where I said "some Hindus" I should have said, "Some people writing for something called The Hindu."

Wow! Just classic. A slam is attempted based on Stretch Pelousy's getting face time with the Pope. The slam is shown to be without reason or effect. Rather than admit that he was WRONG and his gun was shooting blanks JMT just opens up a new front on the auricular confession salient.

If our assailants ever paid attention to how many of the things they say about us aren't true, they might get a clue about, well, about what the Father of Lies can do.

Please.....

In other words, there is no reasonable rebuttal. False attack is shown to be false, so an attack is launched from another quarter. This way of arguing is noted. and the response to that noting is "Please....."

Fine. We claim the field.

It is written that upon the death of our Saviour on the cross the veil in the temple was rent from top to bottom and any who would had direct access to the Heavenly Father through HIS only Begotten Son. Flesh man was no long needed to perform this prior duty.

One question:

If you think God doesn't desire that mankind participate in the work of salvation, why did He bother to become incarnate?

You can claim whatever you wish doesn’t make it true.

I’ll bet you even think it’s the one true church.

I'd add, as a personal note, that I used to be a little Altar Boy. Also a big Altar Boy.

Sometimes, adults would come looking for me ... usually Sr. Mary Alice.

Some kid had just gotten the Flu, or broken his leg, or some such ... she needed some poor schmuck to fill in for him.

all is done in the name of the Savior.

In the Name of the Savior there are false and mendacious attacks, the ready belief of unsubstantiated rumor, the unwillingness to admit that an attack is careless, scurrilous, and baseless, and a eagerness to "rejoice in the evil" when that evil can be attributed, truly or not, to Catholics.

All in the Name of the Savior.

The article on which this thread is based is bogus. Let's hear somebody who is confident that nothing he can do can separate him from the Love of God which is in Christ Jesus admit that what was attempted was failed tarring of Catholics with a falsehood. You guys start something, won't you finish it before you switch to another attack? Or are arguments which do not go your way invalid BECAUSE they don't go your way?

You can claim whatever you wish doesn’t make it true.

And the point of that is? (And may I suggest English as the language we use on this thread? What is the subject of the verb "doesn't?") When you run out of arguments you just start with saying "It's not true just because you say it is?" There MIGHT be SOME integrity to that argument if your side didn't run like a scalded dog from the initial contention and bring up a flurry of other issues like chaff to obscure the dialectical and rhetorical rout brought on by the initial assault.

I’ll bet you even think it’s the one true church.

LOL! Your side just never quits! Gambit declined.

Ahem. Somebody puts up an article from one newspaper which reports that another newspaper reports that yet another periodical says that somebody wrote something or other, AND on the basis of this ridiculous sourcing the headline is "Marx gets Vatican thumbs up," and we feelthy papists are supposed to defend ourselves from that risible accusation.

That tactic turns out to be an epic fail so now we're going to argue ecclesiology? Why is your side changing the subject that your side brought up?

Bro' Campion:

His side started a fight on the field of whether the alleged article supported their contention that we or the Pope or somebody is a Marxist. Now they're bringing up confession. This obscures their having abandoned the battle field on which THEY arrayed their forces and where THEY invited us to contend.

They have fled, and are now sniping from some other place. We have won this field, but they won't admit it.

Thank you. What I really enjoy is flipping from the orotund fullness of Victorian English to Valleyspeak to red-neck. English is SUCH a great language, ain’t it?

And I'll bet you never messed up. :)

We have this one young guy in our parish who forgets to ring the bells. Father will pause, patiently waiting, and then when he gives up and continues on, they're suddenly rung with great vigor, completely drowning out his words. I think the poor kid tries to make up in decibels what he is lacking in timing. :)
