Atlas Shrugs: Doctors ‘Going Galt’
Human Events ^ | October 13, 2009 | Ralph R. Reiland

Posted on 10/14/2009 7:48:11 AM PDT by bamahead

The headline in Investor’s Business Daily, Sept. 16, 2009: “45% of Doctors Would Consider Quitting If Congress Passes Health Care Overhaul.”

The headline in the Boston Globe, Sept. 28, 2009: “States risk it, raise tax on rich.”

The problem with four of nine U.S. doctors saying they “would consider leaving their practice or taking an early retirement” is that “the number of doctors is already lagging population growth,” reports IBD.

Add millions of new patients to a shrinking supply of doctors and the obvious result is an English-style queue, longer waits in pain, and a centrally directed rationing of service.

That Boston Globe article on soaking the rich explains that New York’s increased confiscation of income from the “deep-pocketed rich” through higher taxes is producing a “millionaires’ exit.”

Said New York’s lieutenant governor, Richard Ravitch, regarding the flight of the state’s millionaires and the decline in government revenues that has already occurred as a result of the higher tax rates: “People aren’t wedded to a geographic place as they once were.”

In Atlas Shrugged, a novel by Ayn Rand, the most productive and creative citizens in the United States -- the innovators, risk-takers, artists, entrepreneurs, capitalists, intellectuals, industrialists -- overturn the conventional concept of victimhood and go on strike, refusing any longer to be exploited by society, refusing to be demonized as too successful, too rich, too individualistic, too free.

Led by John Galt, the novel’s hero, the industrious organize a strike against the ever-expanding yoke of government coercion. They strike to halt the murder of man’s spirit, to halt the confiscation of man’s work, to defend individualism, reason, liberty, human achievement and the market economy.

And to get them back in practice once, and if, sanity returns and this bill in every permutation is revoked , we’ll have to front each one $200K or so in practice start-up costs.

This is an excellent piece- am in the middle of reading Atlas Shrugged again- haven’t read it for years and dusted it off recently. Just imagine how EFFECTIVE a national John Galt movement would be in the medical community.

“would consider leaving their practice or taking an early retirement”

Old news!

I'm a graduate of United States medical school with 5 years of postgraduate training at top U.S. medical center-- And I retired at 53!

Lawsuits! (I was never sued.) The constant threat of lawsuits!

Regulations!

Non-stop assault on the profession! Non-stop harrassment!

Who needs that? I have never regretted my decision to quit.

Atlas started shrugging quite a few years ago.

The population will be adjusted to match the number of doctors available.

That is what happened in China's "great leap forward". They socialized the farms because big state owned farms would be more efficient than small individually owned farms. 20 million starved to death as a result.

Communism is so cool. More space for everyone who remained. Less carbon dioxide production too. More land was returned to nature. The benefits were endless.

That won’t happen.

Stop peeing facts on my fantasy parade.

I can dream, can't I?

Frowning takes 68 muscles.
Smiling takes 6.
Pulling this trigger takes 2.
I'm lazy.

Foreign doctors very well may leave (creating a massive shortage) and a financial crisis because they would also shaft the American financial system by walking away from their medical loans.

We have a constitutional right to health care don’t we?

Of course we do! And we will be treated by imported doctors who got their degree from the back of a match book add.

I have the solution...

“Hell’s ER” starring Gordon Ramsay.
Two teams of orderlies will compete each week in double-elimination rounds under the watchful eye of Chef Ramsey to become the lucky winner of a job as Chief of Staff at a new Public Option hospital....

Of course, Bill Frist could be considered to host if Gordon is too busy...

The one with the Visitor woman speaking? It sounds like an Obama campaign commercial.

That's the one. Two things I LOVED about the trailer:

1 - The bit about health care (and cures) for everyone.
2 - During the TV interview when the Visitor woman says to the interviewer that they shouldn't say anything that would "put us in a bad light". Near fell off my couch the first time I heard that one.

When obamanasia becomes the law of the land, there's going to be a huge black market for emergency medical care.

Instead of back alley abortions, I an easily see back room appendectomies or other surgeries being done by some of these unemployed doctors.

Some times you have to break the law to do what's right.

This has been going on for a long time. Affirmative action has created a situation in which you have two kinds of doctors - AA admits and those who were so outstanding that they overcame AA discrimination and got in.

I hope they have a lot of luck with that. You can’t draft Doctors to treat people. Getting into Med school is not as hard as it used to be, but there is still a huge amount of information to be learned. There are ways to get around a lack of doctors, but they have always been shot down by AMA. There are lots of Nurses, PAs, and Paramedics that can practice at a higher level, but don’t have the time to go to Medical School and have lots of unnecessary limits on them imposed by the State and Medical Associations.

I know it’s somewhat second-hand, but I’ve heard a number of doctors discussing what they are going to do if this mess gets enacted. The ones who say they are bailing are the better ones. The ones staying, well.....

the last couple of docs I heard discussing early retirement were critical-care MDs who take care of the really sick patients on ventilators and such. Already a short-supply specialty that doesn’t pay particularly well. They also manage patients in-house for GPs/internists that don’t like doing hospitalized patient management. Losing these guys would be a MESS.

The SOBs --all of 'em behind the ruse-- know this all too well.
In fact the outcome's so obvious it'd be overkill for a Nostradamus. LOL

Makes me wonder exactly how complicit the ol' AMA is in all of this baloney. I mean if squelching Tort reform worked so well for the shysters why not the physicians, visa vi their uber-lobby?

Good grief, it's nothing more than a free-for-all.
