To The States: Should We Talk About Secession?
Market-Ticker ^ | 11 October 2009 | Karl Denninger

I'm going to go back to this quote by Barney Frank of the US House, because it says everything those in state and local governments need to know:

Barney Frank, the Massachusetts Democrat who is chairman of the House Financial Services Committee, said in an interview that the defaults were, in essence, worth it.

“I don’t think it’s a bad thing that the bad loans occurred,” he said. “It was an effort to keep prices from falling too fast. That’s a policy.”

Got it? It's a policy to screw the state and local governments.

Huh, you say? It's simple, really: State and local governments rely on property tax revenues. Yet defaulted mortgages don't pay property taxes. Yes, there's a lien on the property but this doesn't help the municipal budget now.

And suffer they are:

Tax revenues used to pay teachers and fuel police cars continue to trail even the most pessimistic expectations, despite the cash from the economic stimulus plan pouring into state coffers.

"It's crazy. It's really just unbelievable," said Scott Pattison, executive

“And Article I gives Congress the power to “lay and collect taxes, duties, imposts and excises, to pay the debts and provide for the common defense and general welfare of the United States; but all duties, imposts and excises shall be uniform throughout the United States...” That gave Congress all the justification it needed.”

“That gave Congress all the justification it needed.”

RE: Read the two books I suggested for your edification, because your presumption is quite wrong.

Where on Earth did you get the idea that I was for living under tyranny? I am a Conservative political activist and veteran who fights ardently for freedom. Secession is a silly idea for a myriad of reasons. Which states do you think would go? Those that did would fracture the contiguousness of the country. They would have to raise a military, make treaties with the rest, raise revenue (start up costs for a country are astronomical), etc. If they were a state without ports.... People talk about secession without considering the full ramifications.

Looking back, that wasn't directed at you specifically. It's your assumption that people haven't thought it through that is the sticky wicket. The discussion of secession as opposed to a proposal of secession reminds me of an old saw, "Hope for the best, prepare for the worst". Personally I would expand that proverb to something more proactive, "Do everything within your power to bring about the best, but prepare for the worst". Secession likely being the second worst possible outcome. Worse than that would be to leave as our legacy to our grandchildren the prospect of living under tyranny; agree?.

My friend, it wasn’t an assumption. The comments were and are in response to the thread and the posts. I agree that we should do everything in our power, and I think you and I are doing our part. However, secession is not a viable possibility for the reasons listed previously. Secession and a legacy of tyranny can’t be equated. If tyranny were to prevail then it wouldn’t be because good patriots like yourself did nothing. Therefore, there should be no shame. We should recognize that the fight for liberty is a series of battle which we may not always win, but should never be unwilling to fight...regardless of the odds.

I stand by my views regarding secession.

I'll make a confession to you, I haven't read most of the thread. But what usually develops on threads of this sort is a lot of huffing and puffing and chest beating declaring secede or die, or something similar. NOT to be taken seriously IMHO but that's just me.

We should recognize that the fight for liberty is a series of battle which we may not always win, but should never be unwilling to fight...regardless of the odds.

Just the discussion itself of secession will probably have a lot of folks taking stock on just where THEY are and how things could end up if tyrants aren't stopped at some point -- dead in their tracks. I think history shows that human nature is such that people will endure almost anything to avoid a confrontation. Tyrants count on it. So, does the bluff and bluster serve any purpose? I dunno, but maybe our would-be masters don't know either...

And I'll grant you this, if there aren't enough people to support the battles against the tyrants in DC, there probably wouldn't be a broad base of support for secession either, with some rare exceptions.

“To The States: Should We Talk About Secession?”

It’s time to form an even “more perfect union”. These thugs in the federal government have done everything to destroy this country—intentionally, IMO. We already have a Constitution—so that item is covered. Just leave these federal goons sitting in an empty room.
