Someone please explain to me, why are we bombing the moon?

"Go outside and see of you can see the moon from Winter Haven."

Yes, it is clearly visible but a little hazy out from all this globull warming. It sure was a scorcher yesterday and I hear we're in for high temps for the rest of the weekend.

Looking for traces of water/ice in the polar regions of the moon. Unlike the Apollo missions, which explored the equatorial zones of the moon, this is a first for the polar regions.

No, I'm not an egghead. I'm repeating what they said on NASA TV.

I must live in a cave. Someone please explain to me, why are we bombing the moon?

It was the end of the mission for the orbiting space craft, so they figured they'd end the mission on a 'bang' (crash the craft into the Moon) and see what other interesting things they can discover about the lunar surface.

Lots more at spaceweather.com:

"The impacts are designed to excavate frozen water from the cold and shadowy floor of crater Cabeus. Moon water is valuable stuff. It costs about $30,000 to rocket a liter of water from Earth to the Moon. If NASA could find water already on the Moon, it would save a lot of money for future thirsty colonists. H2O also can be split into O2 for breathing and H2 for rocket fuel.

Evidence of water will be sought in the plumes of debris that billow out of Cabeus. The Hubble Space Telescope, NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter, and several great telescopes on Earth will monitor the plumes for spectral signs of water (H2O) or water fragments (OH). Some results could be available only hours after the impacts, so stay tuned."

Well, it was a non event.
Interesting to watch the process; the results were anti-climactic. In all fairness, the "massaged" (cleaned up) false color images that will filter down "over the next few weeks" may be more readily understood by us mere mortals.

boo..no good pics yet. They say the first pics from the trailing spacecraft will be coming in over the next 2 hours. Hopefully we get some good ones like we had on the Deep Impact Mission. ;)

"They are looking for Dehydrated water!"

For real??!!!

I have tons of boxes filled with dehydrated water. I would have gladly "shared" it as it is getting cumbersome rotating the stock.
